Redbacks collapse to all out 192 in ING Cup against Vics

ADELAIDE, Oct 19 AAP – A suicide run by South Australian opener David Fitzgerald and three quick wickets to Mathew Inness sparked a stunning collapse by the Redbacks in their ING Cup match against Victoria at Adelaide Oval today.

AAP19-Oct-2002ADELAIDE, Oct 19 AAP – A suicide run by South Australian opener David Fitzgerald and three quick wickets to Mathew Inness sparked a stunning collapse by the Redbacks in their ING Cup match against Victoria at Adelaide Oval today.SA was dismissed for 192 in 44 overs, after looking likely to amass a huge total earlier in the innings.SA, sent in to bat, looked on track for a total near 300 when openers Fitzgerald and Greg Blewett comfortably put on a free-scoring partnership of 107 inside the first 20 overs. But the openers then strangely attempted several foolish singles and both were fortunate to survive near misses before Fitzgerald was run out for 54.That started an amazing turnaround, with SA losing 10-85 in 24 overs.Inness had Ben Johnson caught behind for 16 in his fifth over, bowled Blewett for 67 in his sixth, and had Mark Higgs caught for one in his seventh over, to take the score to 4-155 in the 31st over.Michael Miller was run out for five in the 37th over. Then Ian Hewett further compounded SA’s problems in the 38th over, his 10th, trapping Nathan Adcock and Graham Manou lbw in successive balls, both for golden ducks, to make the score 7-172.In the following over, Hewett took a miraculous low left-handed catch at point to dismiss Ryan Harris for a duck, off a slashing Harris drive from Andrew McDonald’s bowling, before Shane Harwood bowled tailenders John Davison (eight) and Paul Rofe (none) to complete the rout.

Everton interested in signing Glen Kamara

Everton’s midfield is currently stacked but that hasn’t stopped Marcel Brands and co from identifying that part of the pitch as somewhere they need to recruit.

The Toffees are close to signing Matheus Nunes from Sporting Lisbon but he’s not the only central player on their shortlist.

What’s the word?

Rafa Benitez has only just walked through the door of Goodison Park but he looks set to be backed significantly by Farhad Moshiri and the Everton boardroom.

One player he could use their financial muscle to sign is Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara.

That’s according to GIVEMESPORT, who suggest that Everton are in a battle with West Ham United to sign the Finnish star.

Arsenal were revealed as potential suitors to re-sign the 25-year-old while Watford are also interested in luring Kamara back to England.

A big upgrade

Kamara has come a long way since being released by Arsenal back in 2017. He was an imperative part of the Rangers squad that won the Scottish Premiership last term and was one of Finland’s best players during the ongoing European Championships.

In fact, he rates as one of the best in the entire of Scotland according to former Gers player Charlie Miller.

In a recent interview, he commented: “Glen Kamara is the best midfielder in Scotland.

“He has the ability to go and play at a very high level. He is athletic, technically very good, is good in the tackle and is becoming a complete player.”

Miller concluded: “Put it this way, there are players going for £30-£40m in England who couldn’t lace Kamara’s boots.”

Judging by the 34-cap general’s form at Euro 2020, it’s clear to see why he’s rated so highly.

Kamara produced 1.3 tackles and a whopping 3.3 interceptions per game. That second tally was the highest of any Finland player at the tournament, showcasing his wonderful ability to read and break up the play.

He is also particularly comfortable and safe in possession of the ball. During the Euros, Kamara was successful with 87.9% of his passes, the second-highest number of Finnish players to start this summer.

Compared to those at Everton, he is streets ahead of Tom Davies, somebody he could replace in the squad after the academy graduate was linked with the exit door.

In 2020/21, Davies managed 1.2 tackles and just 1.4 interceptions per match. His pass success rate was only 81.2% as well.

Kamara’s former manager at Dundee United, Neil McCann, stated: “He isn’t a big, physical lad but he’s made of iron and really strong. I knew immediately that he could handle the ball under pressure and not give it away, so he was perfect. He’s a special talent. He’s lightning-quick but he doesn’t show it. He’s a player who takes instruction well.”

Judging by that, Kamara would add a great deal to the middle of Benitez’s side. He’d be foolish to ignore his qualities this summer, especially if Davies does head for the departure lounge.

AND in other news, Benitez can make an instant impact at Everton by signing “exceptional” 33-goal monster…

Sri Lanka in full swing at SSC

With three `papara’ bands in full swing under the corrugated tin roofs atthe Sinhalese Sports Club, Sri Lanka celebrated the return of Aravinda deSilva and Muttiah Muralitharan to their one-day side, cruising to acomfortable five-wicket win

Charlie Austin04-Aug-2002With three `papara’ bands in full swing under the corrugated tin roofs atthe Sinhalese Sports Club, Sri Lanka celebrated the return of Aravinda deSilva and Muttiah Muralitharan to their one-day side, cruising to acomfortable five-wicket win against Bangladesh in the opening game of athree-match series. The carnival atmosphere off the field – a stark change to the Test series, which was played out in front of empty stands – produced some entertainingafternoon batting by Sri Lanka’s batsmen. With Bangladesh scoring a respectable, if not competitive, 226, MarvanAtapattu guided the host team home after blazing cameos from SanathJayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara.Jayasuriya launched a withering assault in the early overs, thrashing 40from 32 balls, including six fours and a massive short arm jab for six thatsailed onto the grassed bank in front of the scoreboard. When he departed, caught at short mid-wicket off a miscued pull, Sangakkaracarried on the attack, scorching to 29 from 23 balls with six fours.Sri Lanka rattled up their 100 in 14.2 overs, allowing them to amble towardsvictory after Sangakkara was caught at mid-wicket, slog-sweeping mediumpacer Khaled Mahmud. The right-hander Atapattu, now playing as an opener after the axing ofRomesh Kaluwitharana, eased himself past fifty for the 41st time in hiscareer. He looked set for a century but was run out for 83 after a direct hit fromManjural Islam, the wicket bringing veteran Aravinda de Silva (1) to thecrease for the first time in one and a half years in a One-DayInternational.De Silva’s arrival was greeted with a cheering ovation from the crowd, butthey were only able to savour one sweep shot before the 36-year-old beforehe was dubiously adjudged to have feathered a catch behind.Arnold guided Sri Lanka past the winning post, finishing with 29 from 56balls.Earlier in the day, Bangladesh, looking for only their fourth victory inone-day cricket, had boldly elected to bat first in the morning on a pitchthat traditionally offers the fast bowlers encouragement during the firsthour. But the decision appeared justified as the openers, Al Sahariar and MohammadAshraful, comfortably negotiated the early overs, adding 38 for the firstwicket, as left-armer Chaminda Vaas failed to swing the ball. However, in the tenth over, Al Sahariar chased a wide swinging delivery fromDilhara Fernando to be caught behind for 25, precipitating a top ordercollapse that saw four wickets fall for 38 runs.Habibul Bashar (2) dragged a short ball from Chamila Gamage on to his stumpsand Alok Kapali gifted Mahela Jayawardene a simple catch at first slip togive debutante all-rounder Hasantha Fernando his first wicket ininternational cricket. With Ashraful caught at mid-off for 36, attempting an over-ambitious loftedstraight drive against Muttiah Muralitharan, Bangladesh were precariouslyplaced on 86 for four. But gutsy, workman-like half centuries from Tushar Imran (61) and skipperKhaled Mahmud (54) ensured the visitors their highest score against SriLanka. The pair added 90 for the fifth wicket, forcing Jayasuriya to chop andchange his bowlers, seven of whom were used during the innings. In the end it was Muralitharan, playing his first one-day match sincedislocating his shoulder at Sharjah last April, who broke through as Imrantop edged an attempted sweep. The wicket drew Muralitharan level with Australian spinner Shane Warne on278 wickets, fourth equal highest wicket-taker in ODI history.Sri Lanka re-grouped after the fall of Imran, restricting Bangladesh to 55runs in the final 10 overs, as wickets fell too frequently for an all-outassault.In the morning, Sri Lanka had awarded two new caps to fast bowler ChamilaGamage and medium pace all-rounder Hasantha Fernando.Bangladesh, meanwhile, drafted in all three of their one-day specialists -former captain Naimur Rahman, left arm spinner Mohammad Raffique andall-rounder Khaled Mahmud – as they packed their side with all-rounders.

QPR goalkeeper Kelly attracting interest

Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper Liam Kelly looks set to depart the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium this summer.

What’s the latest?

That’s according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon, who claimed in a post on Twitter that the QPR shot-stopper is a target of both Motherwell and Dundee United in the summer transfer window, with the Scottish duo potentially considering a loan bid for the 25-year-old.

The Motherwell manager Graham Alexander has already stated his desire to bring the ‘keeper back to Fir Park this summer, after the former Scotland U21 international impressed during a loan spell at the Scottish Premiership side last season.

Kelly must go

Since joining QPR from Livingston in what was a £54k deal back in the summer of 2019, Kelly has struggled to make any great impression at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium to date, having played second fiddle to both Joe Lumley and Seny Dieng.

Indeed, over his two-year spell in west London, the £360k-rated goalkeeper has made just 21 appearances in all competitions for the Rs, over which he has conceded 35 goals and kept just three clean sheets.

The vast majority of these appearances came in his debut season at the club, featuring in 19 Championship fixtures for Mark Warburton’s side, conceding an average of 1.5 goals per game and earning a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.79.

Last season, the £7k-per-week shot-stopper failed to make a single appearance for QPR, with both Lumley and Dieng highly impressing for the club in the league, averaging SofaScore match ratings of 7.04 and 6.96 respectively.

Kelly then joined Motherwell on a loan deal in the January transfer window, where, to his credit, the 25-year-old impressed over his 18 Scottish Premiership appearances, keeping six clean sheets and averaging a SofaScore match rating of 6.97.

However, despite his decent level of performance while in Scotland, this should not be enough to convince Warburton that the ‘keeper is of a Championship standard, and it would appear highly advisable for the 58-year-old to allow the player, whom Alexander claimed had a “massive impact” on his side, to leave the club this summer.

SPCL2 – Easy wins for leading US and Easton

There’s two points in it at the top of Southern Electric Premier League, Division 2 with United Services continuing to hold off Easton & Martyr Worthy’s challenge

Mike Vimpany (as published in Daily Echo)16-Jun-2002There’s two points in it at the top of Southern Electric Premier League, Division 2 with United Services continuing to hold off Easton & Martyr Worthy’s challenge. The pair both romped to easy win – US crushing Trojans by ten wickets, and Easton thrashing neighbours Winchester KS by 124 runs.Only Simon Williams, who battled 41 overs for his 37, put up much resistance as Damian Carson (6-15) helped skittle Trojans for a disappointing 129 at Burnaby Road. Pete Andrew (64) and Mark Toogood (60) swept US to 130-0 in 28.3 overs.Easton were wobbling at 25-3 and reached an uncertain 99-5 before Steve Green (62) and Francis Gill (51 not out) took control at River Park. Their stand helped Easton to 208-6 – a total far beyond WKS, who crashed to 84 all out, with Andy Birch (4-7) removing the tail.Old Tauntonians & Romsey were eyeing a total batting disaster as Hampshire’s James Schofield (5-16) and David Griffiths (2-10) reduced them to 41-8 at the Rose Bowl.Jeremy Ord (23 not out) spared their blushes, but OTR only managed 73 after the Hampshire Academy had scored 212-8 off 50 overs. The Young Hawks were 94-5 (Iain Brunnschweiler 31) until Hampshire 2nd XI debutant David Wheeler cracked 70 to put the county fledglings in a powerful position.Ian Stuart was the hero of Sparsholt’s nervy two-wicket win over Hungerford at the Norman Edwards Memorial Ground. He staved off a late collapse, striking a match winning 45 not out to see Sparsholt past Hungerford’s 173 (Steve Wyatt 83).Andy Lang (5-13) and Ian Ellis (3-32) got amongst the Hungerford batsmen, but Sparsholt suffered two batting collapses before a last-over victory was achieved.Owen Dawkins (3-34) and Paul Warren (3-28) sent four Sparsholt wickets tumbling for eight runs after Ollie Kelly (32) and Tim Richings (27) had provided a 63-run start. Then, after Stuart and Andy Heyes (35) had eased Sparsholt to 155-4, four more wickets fell before victory was achieved.Lymington held their breath and clung on to a narrow six-run victory to thwart a remarkable comeback by basement side Rowledge. The New Forest visitors appeared to have the game in the bag when Rowledge, chasing Lymington’s 238-4, dipped to 146-8 (Jeff Annings 61).But ninth-wicket pair Darren Mitchell (60) and Chris Yates (38 not out) added 80 to repair the damage caused by spin duo Danny Peacock (5-35) and Aaron Heal (3-46).Trevor Phillips broke the stand at 226-9 before Rowledge, requiring 12 runs from Glyn Treagus’s final over, suffered a fourth ball run out and conceded defeat at 232 all out.Treagus earlier featured with the bat, hitting a long overdue 82 in a century second-wicket partnership with Peacock (60).Lymington progressed to 210-4 (Ben Craft 29) and went on to post 238-4, with Martin Hunt (20 not out) and Neil Trestrail (19 not out) enjoying a last-over romp.

Palmer: Ross Barkley won’t revive his career at West Ham

Chelsea star Ross Barkley will not revive his career at West Ham, warns former Premier League midfielder Carlton Palmer.

Barkley spent the 2020/21 season on loan at Aston Villa, but it does not look like he will be staying at the Midlands club after falling out of favour in the second half of the campaign.

The £96,000-a-week attacking midfielder is now being linked with a move to the London Stadium, with the MailOnline reporting that West Ham have an interest.

With David Moyes knowing the player well from their time at Everton together, the Hammers boss may feel he can get the best out of Barkley.

However, Palmer has his concerns, especially when it comes to Barkley’s injury record, comparing him to an ex-West Ham player who struggled to stay fit during his time in east London.

“Everybody keeps saying everywhere he goes, ‘Can he revive his career, can he revive his career?’ Ross doesn’t play enough football games,” Palmer told FFC.

“He’s a quality football player, quality football player. He just has too many injuries, similar to Jack Wilshere – quality football player, just too many injuries.”

A hamstring injury saw Barkley miss quite a few games in the season that has just gone, while a foot problem the campaign prior also resulted in him missing a lot of action, so it is easy to understand Palmer’s concerns.

Spurs hit Pochettino stumbling block

Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a crushing setback in their attempts to bring Mauricio Pochettino back to the club…

What’s the word?

According to ever-reliable football.london correspondent Alasdair Gold, Spurs’ attempts to rehire the 49-year-old have hit a “major roadblock,” though the club have not given up hope of securing him.

It’s thought that the Argentine is open to returning to North London, having held talks with chairman Daniel Levy, who sacked him in November 2019 after a poor run of form.

Gold claims that Paris Saint-Germain have no intention of letting Pochettino go, with his “dream” club Real Madrid also keen on him succeeding Zinedine Zidane at the Bernabeu.

Reports in France, via football.london, suggest that the Ligue 1 giants have even taken up the option in his deal, meaning he would be tied down at Les Parcs des Princes until 2023, meaning the Lilywhites would have to pay a substantial amount in compensation.

Crushing blow

This will come as a gutting blow to many in North London, particularly the Spurs faithful, who had been dreaming of Pochettino’s sensation return since news first emerged last week.

As relayed by This is Futbol, many supporters couldn’t contain their excitement over the 49-year-old potentially coming back to the club. One fan claimed it was “like Christmas Eve” whilst another said he was “salivating uncontrollably”.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-manager-gossip-transfer-rumours-team-and-injury-updates-and-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, manager gossip, transfer rumours, team and injury updates and more!”]

However, their reactions have quickly changed in response to Gold’s latest bombshell, with the Lilywhites’ faithful slamming the board, suggesting that they are “stupid” whilst others deemed the situation “embarrassing”.

It has now been just over six weeks since Jose Mourinho received his P45 from Levy and, in that time, the Portuguese has already found his next managerial position – joining AS Roma – whilst Spurs still appear in limbo.

They have seen many potential candidates come and go, including mooted top targets Julian Nagelsmann, who has swapped RB Leipzig for Bayern Munich, and Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers, who would rather remain at the King Power Stadium – understandably.

This news over Pochettino means Spurs are even further back in their managerial search and at this stage, that has to be a worrying prospect.

Right now, the North London giants are heading into the European Championships and the summer in a complete mess. They have no manager, Harry Kane wants to leave with three Premier League rivals keen on signing him, and many supporters want both Levy and owners ENIC gone.

The Spurs chairman may now have to turn to some of the uninspiring names left on his reported four-man shortlist, of which Everton failure Roberto Martinez and the inexperienced Graham Potter feature.

Levy better hope he gets this appointment right or he’ll face a wrath of fury from the unhappy Lilywhites fanbase.

AND in other news, Levy can finally replace Jan Vertonghen with swoop for “amazing” £26m-rated beast who once bullied Kane…

Hooper admits to fear of fatigue

West Indies captain Carl Hooper admitted to one major concern yesterday on the eve of the first Cable & Wireless Test against New Zealand and it was far more relevant than his World Cup choice, Brazil, being knocked out even before he tosses the coin

Tony Cozier21-Jun-2002West Indies captain Carl Hooper admitted to one major concern yesterday on the eve of the first Cable & Wireless Test against New Zealand and it was far more relevant than his World Cup choice, Brazil, being knocked out even before he tosses the coin at Kensington Oval this morning. When you look at the team in the last game [Sunday’s One-Day International in St Vincent against the New Zealanders], the way we bowled and fielded, you can sense the guys are tired and beginning to flag a little bit, he said. His fear was two opposing batsmen getting stuck in and batting well for a session. In such a scenario, he sensed it would be easy to chuck it in, adding ominously that you might see things beginning to crack. These are things we’ve got to guard against; these are things that, as captain, I’m worried about. His qualms are the consequence of the protracted international season that began in Sharjah in late January with two Tests and three One-Dayers against Pakistan. It has continued in the Caribbean with five Tests and three One-Day Internationals against India and five more internationals against New Zealand. The two upcoming back-to-back Tests bring it to a merciful close. We’ve got tired legs and, while you want to remain loyal and go with those who’ve been doing it for you this season, at the same time I think you’ve got to be honest and open and realise that some guys are struggling. The last thing you want to do is put them in a Test match when they can’t give you what they need really, he added. In the circumstances, Cameron Cuffy, at 32 the oldest member of the attack, has been omitted on the official grounds that he is jaded, and Darren Powell, the 24-year-old Jamaican flown back from the ‘A’ team’s tour of England on Wednesday, chosen to make his Test debut as one of the four fast bowlers.Mahendra Nagamootoo, the leg-spinner and useful lower order left-handed batsman, was named in the 12 from whom the starting 11 will be chosen but is likely to remain in the dressing room with Cuffy and Ryan Hinds. After a long season, you need somebody to inject a bit of new life into the side, Hooper said. The captain was enthusiastic over Powell, noting he had bowled with with a lot of fire and a lot of pace at yesterday’s practice.Obviously, he’s looking to impress, Hooper added. He wants to play and he’s hungry. So Powell is set to become the latest of the several fast bowlers tried in recent times and is likely to share the new ball with Merv Dillon who passed a final fitness test on the lower back strain that required a week’s rest after the fourth One-Dayer against the Kiwis. The West Indies triumphed 2-1 over India the Test series before losing 2-1 in the shorter matches. They bring the psychological advantage of a 3-1 margin over New Zealand in the One-Day Internationals.New Zealand have not won a Test in the Caribbean on three previous tours. They drew all five in 1972, lost two and drew two in 1985, and lost one and drew one in 1996.They come this time as favourites, with emphatic victories over the West Indies in their last series in late 1999 in New Zealand and rated at No. 3 on the current International Cricket Council Test standings, three higher than the West Indies.

Ball reacts to Rangers link with Veerman

Former Rangers star Michael Ball says that the club will back Steven Gerrard if he decides to pursue Heerenveen midfielder Joey Veerman, in an exclusive interview with The Transfer Tavern.

The 22-year-old has been in fine form for the Dutch club this season, scoring seven goals and laying on 10 assists in 31 Eredivisie games.

Inside Futbol have carried quotes from Ferry de Haan, the club’s technical director, who is said to have confirmed that there is interest in the player.

He will cost around £8.5m, per the report, and Ball believes that Rangers will gladly back Gerrard if he decides to pursue a move.

Veerman is just 22 and he is a versatile presence, capable of playing in defensive and central midfield, as well as on the left of midfield.

A former Netherlands U21 international, Ball believes that a deal could well be done this summer, as the board look to back the boss.

Speaking to TT, he said: “They know the Dutch, how they are trained, and how they come through the youth system. His numbers are fantastic.

“He will probably cost more than Ryan Kent maybe, or around the same amount of money, so if Steven wants him as number one target, I feel the club will 100% back him.”
