Aston Villa: Fans react as Callum Wilson could arrive in Scott Hogan swap deal

Many Aston Villa fans have reacted to a report by the Telegraph that claims a move for Callum Wilson could include Scott Hogan joining Bournemouth.

After suffering relegation with the Cherries, Wilson will seemingly be keen to find a route back into the Premier League.

Villa, who survived on the final day of the season thanks to a 1-1 draw with West Ham United, will look to make some improvements to their squad this summer and it is thought that boss Dean Smith is keen to add a striker.

Having seen the likes of Wesley, Mbwana Samatta and Keinan Davis all struggle to find consistent goalscoring form, Smith is now being linked with a move for Wilson.

The Telegraph report that a deal for 28-year-old could include Hogan, who scored seven goals in 17 games on loan with Birmingham City in the second half of last season, moving in the opposite direction.

Reacting to the report via Twitter account @villareport, Claret and Blue fans gave their opinion on the potential swap deal and it seems they are split. Whilst some are keen due to Wilson’s decent top flight record – he has netted 41 times in 126 Premier League matches – others think he could be a risk given his high wages.

Newcastle United: Offer for Luqman Hakim could be vital step toward Saudi takeover [Opinion]

Newcastle United have made an offer for Malaysian wonder kid Luqman Hakim, according to Arena (via NUFC Blog).

According to The Guardian, the 18-year old was on the list of ‘top 60 young footballers of 2019’ last year and has been tipped to make the move to Europe in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Hakim secured a deal of five years with Belgian first division team K.V. Kortrijk last year, which is owned by Vincent Tan, who English football fans will also recall is the owner of Cardiff City.

He graduated from a football development programme in Malaysia and seemed to graduate with flying colours, and was going to be rewarded by being able to train with Cardiff until he turned 18 in March earlier in this year.

However, that arrangement was postponed, and thus he has been playing with Malaysian giants FA Selangor instead.

Lionel Foy is the agent of the prospect and has claimed there are lots of teams in the Premier League interested in securing the signature of the striker, however, it is not known yet if he would be allowed to be given a work permit first that would allow him to play in the English top flight.

Nevertheless, if the Magpies’ offer for Hakim is accepted by his club, then it could possibly be a sign that the proposed takeover at St. James’ Park will go through.

Given his strong connections in Asia with Malaysia, the youngster could attract more supporters from that part of the world, and could be an incentive for the Saudis especially to push through their £300 million bid.

Only time will tell whether their deal with Mike Ashley goes through, but if it does, Hakim could be a catalyst for that given his Asian connections.

Geordies, do you see any link between the Hakim offer and the Saudi takeover? Comment below!

Edgeley Park

Key Information about Edgeley Park

Edgeley Park is the home of National League side Stockport County, and it has been since 1902. The Cheshire based stadium holds almost 11,000 spectators and it was shared with Rugby Union club Sale Sharks between 2003-12.

In 2015, Stockport Council purchased the stadium for £2m, and leased it back to the club in order to block redevelopment and stop it from being demolished.

A history of Edgeley Park

Up until 1902, Stockport County had played all of their home matches at Green Lane in Heaton Norris. Throughout history, Edgeley Park has seen many greats play at the historic ground, including George Best, Bobby Moore, and Kevin Keegan. The first Main Stand was built in 1913, and it held an increased 500 seats.

Ten years later, a wooden terrace was built at the Cheadle End and in 1927 the Popular Side was reconstructed before it was extended further back to hold 16,000 spectators in 1934. Just one year after this expansion, the main stand was burnt down after the timber caught fire, though it was rebuilt a year later.

Following the Bradford City stadium fire in 1985, all wooden structures were removed from the stadium. The stadium was originally built in 1901 for Rugby League club Stockport RFC, though Stockport County moved there following the expansion of their fan base due to their entrance into the Football League two years earlier.

The longest ever football match recorded in history took place at Edgeley Park on March 30, 1946. The Division Three North Cup replay took place between Stockport County and Doncaster Rovers and it lasted an extraordinary three hours and 23 minutes. The replay commenced after the first game ended 2-2, and it was not in anyone’s minds that it would last a remarkable 203 minutes.

The replay was tied once more at 2-2 after 90 minutes, therefore the tie went to extra time; however, 30 minutes were not enough with neither team able to score during that period. Penalty shootouts were not part of the game back during the wartime so the only solution was to play-to-win until one team finally would score.

The record attendance at Edgeley Park is a massive 27,833 when Liverpool visited Stockport County in the fifth round of the 1950 FA Cup. The National League ground has four main stands; the Danny Bergara Stand, Cheadle End, Popular Side, and Railway End which is the usual home of away supporters. In the summer of 2015, Edgeley Park was passed into the ownership of Stockport Council who decided to rent the ground back to the football club on a commercial basis.

Tickets to Watch Stockport County at Edgeley Park

All Stockport County tickets are available to purchase online at Eventbrite and not through the phone. Single matchday tickets range from £5-15, and children typically can attend for free. If you are interested in season tickets, one can be purchased from £240 if you are early enough, though they are usually priced at around £300 for Adults.

Everton: Blues ‘still in play’ for £71.8 million summer target Rafa Silva

Everton are reportedly interested in a acquiring the services of Benfica’s Rafa Silva this summer, despite his hefty price tag.

According to Correio da Manhã (via Sport Witness), the Merseyside outfit have been ‘following’ the winger’s performances but were reportedly put off slightly by his form this season. Arsenal are another team in the running to clinch the 27-year-old’s signature.

Benfica are strictly not looking to sell Rafa this summer, according to the report, but the Portuguese international does have a release clause in place. The price for activating the clause will be a hefty €80 million (£71.8m), which Everton may not be able to afford. Despite the asking price, the Blues are ‘still in play’ and Rafa reportedly wants a move to the Premier League after several years of empty links.

The 27-year-old’s displays this campaign have reportedly forced Everton to take their foot off the gas, despite Rafa tallying nine goals and six assists for Benfica (via Transfermarkt). However, for more than £70m, performances like his 2018/19 season – where he scored 21 goals in total – would be expected to be a more regular occurrence.

As the Gunners look to bolster their squad under Mikel Arteta and wash away the stains of previous seasons of disappointment, Everton must be prepared for war if they are serious about Rafa. Both are teams in transition, but the London side may have more pulling power than the Toffees.

The Portuguese winger would be a superb signing for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, as he would bring pace, versatility and the proven ability to find the back of the net. However, Everton must weigh up their options before they get sucked into a potential bidding battle.

Rafa’s asking price seems far too steep for the Toffees, who are only just entering their transitional period. Indeed, just like Rome wasn’t built in a day, the Italian must be given longer than one transfer window to work his magic.

There’s no reason why Everton won’t eventually be able to poach high-price players like Rafa, but for now at least, they should take their eyes off the big fish and shop smart instead.

What’s your take, Blues? Should Everton still pursue Rafa despite his hefty release clause? Join the conversation in the comments below!

West Ham fans react to the latest update regarding Maxi Gomez

[ad_pod ]

West Ham fans have taken to Twitter after The Guardian revealed that the Hammers are willing to pay £43.5m to meet the release clause of Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez, who looks set to replace Marko Arnautovic at the club.

The Hammers tied Arnautovic down to a new contract on Saturday night following their embarrassing 4-2 loss to AFC Wimbledon, which was met with raised eyebrows given the Austrian’s prior desire to leave the London Stadium this month (as per the BBC).

Interestingly, the 29-year-old’s new deal will come with performance related bonuses, which appears to be a method of incentivising the forward to play to his maximum before getting his wish of a move away in the summer.

Who should replace Marko Arnautovic if he leaves West Ham? FFC’s James Jones has the answer! Check out the video below to find out…

Uruguayan international Gomez, who is seven years younger than Arnautovic, would sign for West Ham in a club-record deal before being loaned back to the Spanish side as they look to avoid relegation from La Liga – it is this factor that looks to have rounded off the negotiations successfully.

Arnautovic will leave in the summer if the Hammers receive a £45m bid, which would then pave the way for Gomez to come in and replace him while the Irons make a tiny profit – seems like a good deal for everyone.

The latest report has certainly got West Ham fans talking on Twitter…

When will Edin Terzic play Gio Reyna?! The wait continues as USMNT star remains on bench for third-straight game for Borussia Dortmund

Giovanni Reyna's wait for a first Borussia Dortmund appearance of the season goes on after he was left on the bench for Friday's match at Hoffenheim.

Reyna left on Dortmund benchHas not featured this seasonVisitors beat Hoffenheim 3-1

The United States international watched on from the sidelines as his side picked up a 3-1 win in the Bundesliga.

It is the third time in a row he has been named among the Dortmund substitutes but overlooked by coach Edin Terzic when it came to making changes.

Despite the 20-year-old's absence, Dortmund picked up another three points to ensure they remain unbeaten after six matches in the German top-flight.

GettyWHAT HAPPENED?

After missing the first two Bundesliga matches of the season through injury, Reyna has only been called up to take a place on the bench for Dortmund since his return to the squad.

For the games against Wolfsburg in the league, Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, and now the trip to Hoffenheim, coach Terzic has turned to other options when deciding to bring on fresh legs to help his team see out results.

Reyna could only watch on as the likes of Emre Can, Karim Adeyemi, Marius Wolf, Niklas Sule and Sebastien Haller were brought on as substitutes to help the 10-man Dortmund sealed the win.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Dortmund were the dominant force throughout the game and took a well-deserved lead just 18 minutes in when Julian Brandt pounced on a defender's error and fed it through to Niklas Fullkrug to fire home.

The visitors gave Hoffenheim a way back in less than 10 minutes later, however, as Mats Hummels conceded a penalty and Andre Kramaric blasted it into the net.

Marco Reus came to Dortmund's rescue just before half-time when Donyell Malen's low cross was knocked into his path by goalkeeper Oliver Baumann and the Germany international seized the opportunity.

The win was put at risk for the final 20 minutes when Ramy Bensebaini was sent off with a second yellow card but that hardly slowed last season's runners-up down.

Indeed, Julian Ryerson went on to score the pick of the bunch when he won the ball in his own half and charged forward, eventually smashing it into the net in stoppage time to wrap things up nicely for Dortmund.

Getty ImagesUSMNT IMPACT

Reyna has little chance of persuading Gregg Berhalter that he is worthy of a spot in the next United States squad, let alone that place in the starting XI that his family feels he deserves.

Dortmund play just two more games before the next international, in which USMNT take on Germany and Ghana.

Given he has not featured at all this season, it is unlikely that Terzic will trust him to line up against AC Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday, but he could be brought on as a substitute, and he will hope to be given a chance in the subsequent Bundesliga clash against Union Berlin.

GettyGOAL'S RATINGS

Giovanni Reyna (N/A):

The 20-year-old had to watch on from the bench yet again as his side maintained their unbeaten start to the Bundesliga season.

With Dortmund top of the table – at least until Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen play over the weekend – Terzic may be more hesitant to alter his starting XI over the coming weeks, so it could be some time before the USMNT star gets his first start of the season.

England Women's player ratings vs Spain: Lucy Bronze blunder blows Lionesses' chances of World Cup final glory

The Barcelona defender had to watch many of her club-mates celebrate glory instead after a poor error in the first half allowed Olga Carmona to score

Olga Carmona's strike went down in history on Sunday as the goal that delivered Spain their first Women's World Cup title, the Real Madrid star breaking England hearts after profiting from a mistake from Barcelona's Lucy Bronze as La Roja beat the Lionesses 1-0 at Stadium Australia.

England had chances before that, with Lauren Hemp most notably hitting the bar, but Bronze lost the ball in the middle of the park before half-time and Ona Batlle's clever switch of play over to her vacated right side allowed Spain to capitalise on the space left, Carmona firing across Mary Earps to find the bottom corner.

Spain could've doubled their lead was it not for Earps saving Jennifer Hermoso's penalty, and though that raised the roof in Sydney with so many England fans in attendance, the closest the Lionesses came to levelling the scores was when Lauren James' effort was tipped over by Cata Coll.

The European champions might've defeated Spain on their way to Euros glory last year, but La Roja got their revenge in the sweetest way on Sunday as they became champions of the world.

GOAL rates England's players from Stadium Australia…

Mary Earps (8/10):

Penalty save was superb, as was her stop to deny Redondo from close range in the first half.

Jess Carter (7/10):

Defensively solid, again, and did well to adapt to a change of position at half-time when England moved to a back four. Huge block to deny Hermoso in the second half.

Millie Bright (6/10):

Positioned herself well to deal with Paralluelo's pace.

Alex Greenwood (6/10):

Stood up tall at the back and was excellent in possession.

Lucy Bronze (4/10):

Her mistake in the middle of the park led to the first goal and she never seemed to recover from that.

Keira Walsh (6/10):

Kept the ball well and scrapped well to thwart Spain.

Georgia Stanway (7/10):

Battled well in midfield and covered well for the centre-backs when they needed it, too.

Ella Toone (6/10):

Did her defensive work well and set up Hemp nicely for her shot off the bar.

Rachel Daly (5/10):

Had a tough time defensively, always outnumbered, but did create when she got forward. Came off at half-time.

Getty ImagesAttack

Alessia Russo (5/10):

Did what she could to create for others but lacked the pace to exploit Spain in transition. Replaced at half-time.

Lauren Hemp (7/10):

Was a real nuisance with her pace and directness. Looked the most likely to score for England, even hitting the bar.

Getty ImagesSubs & Manager

Lauren James (6/10):

Replaced Russo at the break. Forced Coll into a great save but didn't showcase her magic as much as usual.

Chloe Kelly (7/10):

Came on for Daly at half-time and was immediately England's best outlet down the right. Made a real impact.

Beth England (N/A):

Introduced late on, without much time to make an impact.

Sarina Wiegman (7/10):

Hard to disagree with Wiegman's decisions despite the result. Game plan was strong early on but Spain grew into the game and targeted England's wing-backs well. Wiegman changed the system at half-time to counter this and was positive with her substitutions, but England just couldn't create much in the second half, having not taken their chances in the first.

How the USMNT should line up vs Canada in Gold Cup quarterfinal: Red hot Jesus Ferreira to be unleashed again as Bryan Reynolds & Cade Cowell deserve to continue

GOAL takes a look at how the U.S. could line up in the Gold Cup last eight, with interim coach B.J. Callaghan having some big calls to make.

Before the Gold Cup got going, U.S. men's national team interim coach B.J. Callaghan divided the tournament up into two halves. The first was the group stage, clashes with Jamaica, St. Kitts & Nevis and Trinidad & Tobago, which he could use to mix and match while figuring out his team. And then would come the knockouts, a chance to reset, refocus and charge forward towards another trophy.

Well, we're in the business end of the tournament now and, with a week between games, the U.S. heads into the knockout rounds with a clash against Canada. The time for rotating and experimenting is done; now let's see who steps up.

The Gold Cup, of course, is more about individual performances than anything else for the USMNT. The main team, by and large, is on vacation after their Nations League triumph. The players in this camp are largely on the fringes and pushing for more.

Several have seized their chance thus far, earning the right to keep their starting place for the knockouts. However, Callaghan does have some difficult decisions to make. With everyone fit and healthy, who does he leave out? And, with one key player on yellow card watch, does Callaghan make a change now to avoid a potential semifinal suspension?

GOAL takes a look at how the U.S. could line up…

GettyGK: Matt Turner

The time for experimenting is over, and, unfortunately, we didn't get to see Gaga Slonina get a run during the group stage.

This is Turner's time – if fit and healthy, the Arsenal goalkeeper starts every game going forward.

AdvertisementGettyRB: Bryan Reynolds

One of the standouts of the group stage, Reynolds has made this spot his own.

Could Callaghan be tempted to turn to the veteran DeAndre Yedlin? Sure, but should he? Absolutely not. Reynolds has been fantastic so far and has earned the chance to start the rest of the way. We'll see if he sinks or swims but, at least so far, Reynolds has been fantastic.

GettyCB: Miles Robinson

With another week of rest under his belt, Robinson should just about be 100 percent fit.

He was given a 45-minute runout in the final group-stage game, which was a nice rehab assignment. Now, Robinson should be feeling right for the knockouts, where he'll likely start every game, should the US progress.

Getty ImagesCB: Jalen Neal

A big, big decision for Callaghan.

It shouldn't be, to be fair. Neal has been the breakout star of this team, the player that has improved his stock the most with his performances so far. However, Neal is one yellow card away from being suspended for a potential semifinal match.

Looking ahead, though, this Canada game is likely the tougher match than a potential Qatar/Panama semifinal. Knowing that, we'll give Neal the start. If he makes it through the game unpunished, fantastic. If not, he'll get a rest for the semis against a team that is, theoretically, less talented than the one the U.S. will face on Sunday.

The Darwin show! Liverpool winners, losers and ratings as Nunez delivers and Firmino bounces back from World Cup snub

The Reds' South American forwards combined to score all three goals as the Reds signed off for the World Cup break with a win over Southampton

The Darwin Nunez bandwagon is gathering pace at Anfield. The form of Liverpool's £64-million ($72m) man has been on an upward curve for a while now, and it reached a new high here, as the Uruguayan scored twice to ensure the Reds signed off for the World Cup in style, with a 3-1 win over Southampton.

Nunez now has nine goals in as many starts for his new club, and his all-round performance here was comfortably the best he has produced since his summer switch from Benfica. His goals were well-taken, instinctive, first-time finishes from inside the penalty area, and on another day he'd have had a pair of assists too, setting up Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah for chances which Gavin Bazunu saved.

Firmino, left out of the Brazil squad for Qatar this week, had opened the scoring after just six minutes with a fine glancing header from Andy Robertson's free kick, only for Che Adams to hit back almost immediately from a James Ward-Prowse delivery.

Nunez, though, had Liverpool in control by half-time, first finishing off Harvey Elliott's lovely pass on the volley, and rounding off a sweeping move by sliding in to bury Robertson's low cross.

That proved to be the end of the scoring, although Liverpool needed Alisson Becker to make a series of fine saves in the second half to preserve their advantage, and ensure that Nunez was the matchwinner.

Getty ImagesThe Winners

Darwin Nunez:

So much for 'the new Andy Carroll'. With each passing game, such infantile comparisons look ever more absurd. Nunez is now only two goals shy of Carroll's tally for Liverpool, his first-half brace taking him to nine in all competitions. That they have come in only nine starts (18 appearances total), tells you everything about the Uruguayan's quality and, perhaps more importantly, his potential. The 23-year-old is an absolute magnet for chances – he is averaging more than six shots a game so far – and he took two of the three that came his way here, volleying in with his left foot from Elliott's astute pick-out for 2-1, before arriving perfectly to slide home Robertson's low cross for his second. Just as impressive, though, were the signs that his all-round game, criticised harshly during the early weeks of the season, is improving. Here, Nunez didn't just look like a goalscorer or a chaos-bringer. He looked like a £64m footballer. His superb, swept cross from the left should have brought a goal for Salah, while his gorgeous backheel opened up a chance for Firmino. There was a crossfield diagonal from left to right onto Salah's chest, a show of strength and a Cruyff-turn to evade Romeo Lavia in midfield, and certainly enough pressing and tracking to earn the appreciation of the Kop. They chanted his name when he went off, three minutes from time. Job done. Next stop Qatar. You wouldn't want to be facing Uruguay, on this evidence.

Andy Robertson:

If you ever needed a reminder, here it was. Andy Robertson is, and remains, an absolute class act. With two assists in the first half, the Reds left-back secured himself another bit of history. Only Leighton Baines in the Premier League era has created as many goals as a defender. Fifty-three assists is an absurd number, and speaks to the Scot's consistency, as well as his quality. His first here was a set-piece, a free-kick whipped in from the right which Firmino did superbly to guide home with his head. His second was classic Robertson; too sharp for Southampton's defence and able to get in behind onto Firmino's pass, before proving the perfect fizzed low cross for Nunez to convert. He too got a great ovation when substituted. No World Cup for him, sadly, but signs in recent weeks that he's getting back towards top form for his club.

Roberto Firmino:

Six minutes was all it took to expose the folly of Brazil's World Cup selection. Firmino had been devastated to miss out on Tite's 26-man squad for Qatar when it was announced this week, but if you were wondering if he might let it affect his performance here, you needn't have worried. His early header got Liverpool up and running, and it was a superb one too, guided subtly into the far corner from 15 yards. He had a big hand in the Reds' third goal too, sliding in Robertson down the left with a lovely pass inside the full-back. He's had a good start to the season, Firmino. Like Nunez, he has nine goals in all competitions, although seven of the Brazilian's have come in the Premier League. It wasn't enough to get him to Qatar, but it could be enough to give Liverpool food for thought with regards to his contract, which is due to expire at the end of the season.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesThe Losers

Tite:

Is it too late to change your squad? Brazil's coach, in fairness, is hardly light when it comes to attacking options, but he must have watched Firmino's performance here and wondered if he might have made a mistake. Any side in the world would want a No.9 like him, capable of working with the ball as well as against it, and continually doing the heavy lifting to allow the more heralded, spectacular players to do their business. Tite will, at least, have been enthused by the form of Alisson Becker, who made three outstanding saves to keep Liverpool's advantage at two in the second half. He might be a little more concerned by Fabinho, who was better here but not by much. The midfielder still looks lethargic, and that may cost him his starting spot in Qatar.

Naby Keita:

And so we reach the winter break without any sign the fourth-biggest signing in Liverpool's history. Keita hasn't been seen since featuring as a late substitute in the Community Shield back in July, and at this point you have to question whether we have seen the last of the Guinea international in a red shirt. "He's running," said Klopp on Friday, but as Liverpool's midfield has toiled this season, the 27-year-old has, again, been unable to help out and show the quality that persuaded the Reds to pay more than £50m ($60m) to sign him from RB Leipzig four years ago. There have been only 72 starts since then, and only 117 appearances in total. Keita's contract is up at the end of the season, and it is hard to make a case for a renewal. It's a crying shame, because the talent is there, but Liverpool's midfield needs a refresh, and he isn't the man to provide it.

Getty ImagesLiverpool Ratings: Defence

Alisson Becker (8/10):

Beaten to the punch by Adams for the equaliser, but made a string of superb saves in the second half, the best of which was from the same player's close-range header.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (7/10):

Some good, crisp passes into the frontmen, and defended well 1v1 for the most part.

Joe Gomez (6/10):

Mixed. Good when defending on the front foot. Not so good when standing off.

Virgil van Dijk (7/10):

Let Adams go for the equaliser. Was often in the right position to make clearances, and Southampton largely stayed away from him in terms of aerial duels. Close with a couple of headers from corners.

Andy Robertson (8/10):

Superb. Two assists in the first half and bundles of energy throughout.

Fabinho (6/10):

Still looks a bit heavy legged. Did OK in spells but Liverpool were too open in the second half.

Thiago Alcantara (7/10):

Pulled out turn on multiple occasions in the first half, when the left side of Liverpool's team was purring. Faded a little as the game wore on.

Harvey Elliott (7/10):

Beautiful pick-out for Nunez's first goal, and did plenty of other impressive things. Has such a lovely touch, and is growing with each game.
