Cricinfo staff14-Apr-2009Sussex have signed Victoria allrounder Damien Wright as a replacement for their overseas player Yasir Arafat, who was selected to play for Pakistan in the five-ODI series against Australia in Dubai and Abu Dhabi from April 22.”Damien’s an experienced campaigner and has had an outstanding season with Victoria this year,” Mark Robinson, the club’s professional cricket manager, said. ” I’m sure he will fit seamlessly in to the team and we’re excited about his arrival.”Wright averaged 31.33 with the bat for Victoria in first-class cricket last year and took wickets at 28.50 apiece.

Marcal lets down Wolves vs Man United

If you look down at the league table after the first three matches, it will tell a sorry story for Wolverhampton Wanderers and their manager Bruno Lage.

Wolves sit towards the bottom without a single point and they are also yet to score.

How the Molineux outfit haven’t found the net beggars belief. They have taken 56 attempts at goal but have been met with some outstanding goalkeeper but ultimately, poor cutting edge.

In all three of their first games of the campaign, they’ve looked productive. There is clear excitement to the football that Bruno Lage has deployed since arriving in the Midlands but they have nothing to show for it yet.

They play quick counter-attacking football but can’t quite seem to find the back of the net. Adama Traore with eight dribbles to his name was at his usual rampant self against Manchester United on Sunday, but it was almost an exact replica of their 1-0 loss to Spurs a week prior.

Once again, Wolves lost by a solitary goal but it could have so easily gone the other way.

Trincao had an effort that was destined for the goal cleared almost on the line by Aaron Wan-Bissaka and then in the second period, David de Gea made an extraordinary save to deny Romain Saiss from a corner.

At the other end, however, the goalkeeping wasn’t the best.

New signing Jose Sa didn’t actually have much to do in the game but when he was tested, he let Bruno Lage down severely.

Mason Greenwood skipped beyond Marcal and then fired a shot towards the back post. Sa reached out to deny it but could only divert the ball into the goal.

Although the Portuguese stopper should have done better, the defending from Marcal was also lazy.

As the ball was spread out towards Greenwood on the right-hand side of the box, he took the Brazilian full-back on and then fired his shot away. The defender made little attempt to get close to him and as a result, the United striker had the freedom of the box to get a shot away.

Besides that, Marcal didn’t have an awful game. With four tackles to his name, he marshalled Greenwood well for large passages of the game.

Yet, when he didn’t, it ultimately proved devastating for Wolves and Lage.

The left wing-back was sadly also lacking in attacking quality too. When the Old Gold played promisingly on the counter-attack in the first 45 minutes, he got forward on a regular basis.

Marcal occupied tidy spaces on the left flank and consistently found room for a cross. Yet, with Wolves crying out for a bit of quality, he was unsuccessful with all four of his deliveries from a wide area.

The kind of quality that deserted him meant that throughout the course of the match, the £29k-per-week earner lost possession 18 times. Alongside Paul Pogba in the United midfield, that was the highest number by any player on the pitch at Molineux.

Rayan Ait-Nouri signed permanently in the summer after an impressive end to 2020/21 so it surely won’t be long before Lage entrusts him on the left instead.

Marcal is a productive wing-back but in the big moments usually turns out to be frustrating. That was evident on Sunday evening.

AND in other news, Wolves offered chance to sign “outstanding” 67-cap gem, he’s a great Moutinho heir…

Khan and Kuhn make Australians toil

Australia’s first day of cricket on their tour of South Africa didn’tso much answer questions as raise more of them. Their first-choicespinner Bryce McGain was belted, their backup fast bowler BenHilfenhaus was the most dangerous of the fast men and there was noreal chance for either Andrew McDonald or Marcus North to gain anadvantage in the battle for the No. 6 spot.Ricky Ponting chose to field on a flat pitch but even he musthave been surprised by the lack of penetration from his bowlers.Imraan Khan’s fifth first-class century created the early problemsbefore the wicketkeeper Heino Kuhn, who had been so out of form that he wasrecently dropped by the Titans, batted his way into touch with anunbeaten 95.At the close, the South African Board President’s XI hadreached 393 for 5 with Kuhn and David Wiese (44 not out) at the creaseand Australia will be hoping that whenever their batsmen get anopportunity they enjoy it as much as the locals. Khan’s 100 from 111balls was fluent and he drove a series of sweetly timed boundariesdown the ground when the fast bowlers overpitched. He also took a liking to McGain, who was punished for droppinguncharacteristically short and was also struck down the ground withease. McGain finished his first day of bowling for Australia with theunflattering figures of 2 for 126 from 19 overs and he may have had aglimpse of what Jason Krejza felt in the warm-up game ahead of theTest series in India. With Nathan Hauritz rested – along with Michael Hussey and Michael Clarke, who has battled back soreness – it was the perfect opportunity for McGain to confirm hisplace in the side for next week’s first Test in Johannesburg. Thingsbegan well when he had Alviro Petersen caught at midwicket in hisfirst over but there was little joy for the rest of the day.Kuhn and Vaughn van Jaarsveld both used their feet to McGain andslammed him for sixes down the ground and his only other success camewhen Gulam Bodi was adjudged caught behind for 48. Bodi was clearlyunhappy with the decision but McGain was thrilled; he had a secondwicket to go alongside the 18 fours and four sixes that were struckoff his bowling as he struggled to find much drift and turn on anunhelpful surface. The fast bowlers didn’t have much more to celebrate, althoughHilfenhaus and Peter Siddle were impressive and collected a wicketeach. Hilfenhaus entered the game as the fourth choice behind Siddle,Mitchell Johnson and Doug Bollinger, but his ability to swing the balland create opportunities will force the selectors to consider him forthe first Test.He should have had the centurion Khan caught at first slip for 9 butNorth, playing his first match for the senior team, put downthe simple chance. Hilfenhaus did manage to remove the other openerBlake Snijman, who was caught behind off a superb outswinger, and hemoved the ball in to the left-hander Khan and drew a string ofinside-edges before Siddle reaped the reward.Siddle had Khan caught at mid-on and Australia hoped that, with thescore at 192 for 3, it might be a turning point. They were especiallyoptimistic when McDonald’s first over brought the wicket of vanJaarsveld, who drove to cover and was well caught by the divingPhillip Hughes. But then came a 107-run stand between Bodi and Kuhn, who continued to attack McGain and added further pain for theAustralians.Neither Johnson nor Bollinger picked up a wicket -though Bollinger should have had an early one when Snijman hooked tofine leg and was misjudged by Hilfenhaus – and the day ended with theAustralians pleased that they were playing in front of a couple ofhundred locals in Potchefstroom rather than thousands in Johannesburg. They have two more days to answer the questions that remain hangingover an inexperienced squad.

Delap signs new Man City deal

Manchester City have been boosted by the recent news that Liam Delap has signed a new long-term contract, which should keep him at the Etihad until 2026.

What’s the word?

After a phenomenal season with the U23s, it is no surprise that City have worked quickly to tie Delap down for the long-term, as he looks destined to have a huge future in the game.

The Citizens announced on Friday that the 18-year-old had penned a new deal until 2026, which will no doubt delight Pep Guardiola, as he now has a player to put into the first team in the near future.

The Spanish manager had suggested earlier in the summer that Delap would become part of the first-team squad at City this season, although he has been heavily linked with a loan move to the Championship, despite City having thus far failed to replace Sergio Aguero.

A boost for Guardiola?

Considering Delap’s sensational form with the academy sides since joining from Derby County in 2019, there seems little to suggest that the teenager can’t be a regular with the Citizens in the future.

Last season saw the striker contribute 24 goals in 20 Premier League 2 games, firing City to that title, whilst he also scored on his professional debut in City’s 2-1 win against Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-manchester-city-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Manchester City transfer rumours and news!”]

Delap also made two substitute appearances in the Premier League and FA Cup, which suggests that he is certainly in Guardiola’s thinking, and perhaps after a season on loan in the Championship, we could see him starting on a regular basis in the 2022/23 Premier League season.

When speaking about Millwall’s interest in signing Delap on loan, manager Gary Rowett was quick to sing his praises, saying:

“Liam Delap, quite simply, is the best young striker around at the moment and every single Championship club, I’m sure, would be interested in taking him. Of course, we’d be interested. But, at the same time, I’m sure everyone would be interested in him.”

Therefore, it is undoubtedly a boost that he has committed himself to City, and everyone involved with the club will surely be excited to see more of him in the future.

Neil Jones provides key Liverpool update

Liverpool have received no bids for unwanted Reds pair Loris Karius and Sheyi Ojo, according to reliable journalist Neil Jones.

The Lowdown: No future for duo

Jurgen Klopp has had a quiet summer window overall, only bringing in Ibrahima Konate and selling the likes of Gini Wijnaldum and Xherdan Shaqiri.

Two players with no future at Liverpool are Karius and Ojo, with the former fourth in the goalkeeping pecking order and the latter not playing for the Reds’ first-team since the 2016/17 season.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326â€]

The Latest: Jones provides key update

Taking to Twitter on deadline day, Goal‘s Jones claimed that there have been ‘no developments’ regarding Karius and Ojo moving on.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-2/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: Sell them on, Reds

Neither Karius or Ojo have any kind of future at Anfield, so it is for their own good that they find a new club before the transfer window closes.

If not, they risk stagnating further at Liverpool and enjoying no first-team football, with Klopp highly unlikely to even play them in the domestic cups based on how little action they’ve seen in recent seasons.

Karius has never recovered from his 2018 Champions League final nightmare, while Oyo simply isn’t at the level required to be a handy squad player, spending time at Wigan Athletic, Wolves, Fulham, Reims, Rangers and Cardiff City in the past.

In other news, one Liverpool player could leave on deadline day – find out who it is here.

Start time 10.30am (0830GMT)Big PictureWhere now for Bangladesh? It is a question that has hung like a shadow over their development ever since they made their Test debut in 2000, yet as the years roll on, there is little evidence of improvement. Their form guide, a string of “Ls”, reads like a Welsh railway station, and the first Test against South Africa last week was a case in point. Encouraging performances from their bowlers contrasted starkly with an insipid effort from Bangladesh’s batsmen who, in the second innings, folded like a pack of cards to lose their last seven wickets for 79. No wonder Mickey Arthur, the South Africa coach, is concerned about his side’s build-up to the Australia series next month.Bangladesh’s inadequacies aside, South Africa had their own problems, most notably Morne Morkel, who conceded nearly seven-runs-per-over in the first innings, spraying the ball with alarming regularity. At the other end, however, South Africa have Dale Steyn who is rapidly becoming the finished article. His ninth five-wicket haul decimated Bangladesh’s second innings, while his career strike-rate stands at a venomous 36.6.With Paul Harris out of the series, South Africa will pick wither Monde Zondeki – Test-less for three years – or the left-arm spinner, Robin Peterson. Given Bangladesh’s fear of anything fast, Zondeki ought to strap on his bowling boots and ensure South Africa wrap things up in three days flat.Form guide (last 5 Tests, most recent last)South Africa DWWLW
Bangladesh LLLDLWatch out forMorne Morkel – The least convincing of South Africa’s quick bowlers, Morkel is striving to find his form ahead of the Australia tour. He is having a few issues with his action, especially the wrist at delivery, and is still firing deliveries wide of the stumps. When he gets it right all the ingredients are there for a destructive burst, and he needs a long bowl in this Test – if the Bangladesh batsmen are good enough to allow him that.Mahbubul Alam – He was impressive in Bloemfontein, maintaining a steady line and length even when South Africa’s top order were piling on the runs. Found swing with both new balls, removing Graeme Smith with a beauty, and with more luck could have bagged more than two wickets. If the pitch is green he could cause a few problemsBangladesh bottle – There is no harm in losing to a better team, but a meek surrender makes for poor viewing. No one expects Bangladesh to beat South Africa, but for their own self esteem they must show some guts over the next few days. Staying in line against the pace would be a start, and the batsmen also need to play what they preach and shelve their flashy strokeplay for something more resilient.Team newsThe only change South Africa will make is for the injured Paul Harris, to be replaced by Monde Zondeki or Robin Peterson.South Africa (probable) 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Neil McKenzie, 3 Hashim Amla, 4 Jacques Kallis, 5 AB de Villiers, 6 Ashwell Prince, 7 Mark Boucher (wk), 8 Morne Morkel, 9 Dale Steyn, 10 Makhaya Ntini, 11 Monde ZondekiAbdur Razzak, Bangladesh’s leading spinner, looks set to return to the team, probably in place of Naeem Islam. Test matches will survive Twenty20 – Morgan

David Morgan, the president of the ICC, has allayed fears that Test cricket could eventually be overshadowed in prominence by the growing popularity and financial clout of Twenty20.Receiving an OBE for services to sport from the Prince of Wales at Buckingham Palace, Morgan said: “I think world cricket has probably never been healthier. Some people worry about Twenty20 but I think Twenty20 cricket is a great opportunity for the game.”I don’t think it threatens the longer form of the game and you will have seen that from the game in Chennai, which went to five days and was a great Test match. Test match cricket is still the biggest challenge for our cricketers.”Morgan, the former ECB chairman, also praised England for taking the decision to return to India in the wake of the Mumbai terrorist strikes. “I believed firmly that if the security advisers judged it was safe and secure for the England team to return then the England team had a duty to return.”Captain Kevin Pietersen and the management team saw it as a duty – and they fulfilled it. It’s a great credit to the cricketers and their support team that they went back to India. It’s very important that terrorism is not seen to be winning.”

Leeds: Reporter says fans will "worry" after seeing who could join

Leeds United fans will have started to 'worry' about their prospects this term due to their decision to take Sam Byram on trial at Elland Road, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Is Sam Byram returning to Leeds United?

According to Football Insider, Byram has returned to Elland Road on trial in a bid to try and win himself a deal at Leeds United to work under his old boss Daniel Farke.

The Whites are mooted to see the 29-year-old as an inexpensive option to help with depth at left-back, even though he is predominantly a right-back by trade and his arrival may free up expenditure to put to good use elsewhere. As per The Guardian, Thurrock-born Byram started his senior career at Leeds United before joining West Ham United in 2016.

Byram is known well by Leeds United boss Farke and left Norwich City upon the expiration of his £30,000 per week contract at Carrow Road at the end of last season alongside Kieran Dowell and Michael McGovern, who have since headed north of the border to join Rangers and Hearts, respectively.

Following their capture of Ethan Ampadu, who joined from Chelsea in a £7 million transfer earlier this week, 90min report that Leeds United are 'set to reunite' with Byram, which could mean the Englishman is in line to join on a permanent basis.

Last term, Byram made 16 appearances in all competitions for Norwich City and managed to get himself on the scoresheet on one occasion, as per Transfermarkt.

Speaking to Football FanCast, transfer insider Jones thinks Leeds United fans will worry about the type of recruitment the club may be willing to conduct in light of their decision to take Byram on trial.

Jones told FFC: "What I like about a lot of them [Leeds United's summer targets] is they've got a point to prove. I think that's what Leeds need to do now because Leeds have a point to prove next season and they need to bounce back quickly. You would expect them to be in that promotion hunt next term, but when you're seeing the likes of Sam Byram going back to the club on trial, you're going to start to worry as a Leeds fan because that's absolutely not where you thought the club would be heading straight on the back of relegation, you thought they could set their sights a bit higher than that."

Who else has been linked with Leeds United this window?

According to renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Leeds United are keen to bring in Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Edouard Michut, as he stated on the social media platform: "Excl: Leeds United are among several clubs interested in Edouard Michut from Paris Saint-Germain. Deal will depend on conditions decided by PSG in the coming days."

Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara is reported to have 'agreed terms with the club leadership at Elland Road' ahead of a proposed move to Leed United, as per Last Word On Sports.

emmanuel-dennis-championship-leeds-united

Football Insider claim that Nottingham Forest striker Emmanuel Dennis will be allowed to leave the City Ground this summer amid interest from Leeds United in offering him a chance to ply his trade at Elland Road in 2023/24.

All things considered, Leeds United fans could be in for an intriguing few weeks as Farke starts to shape his squad ahead of their return to Sky Bet Championship action for the first time since 2020.

PCB summons ex-MCG curator ahead of Lahore Test

Decision part of Ramiz Raja’s plans to overhaul state of pitches in Pakistan

Umar Farooq15-Mar-2022The PCB has sought the services of former MCG and ICC academy curator *Toby Lumsden for a 10-day period to oversee pitch preparation ahead of the third Test against Australia in Lahore. He will also assist local curators as part of chairman Ramiz Raja’s broader plan to overhaul the process of pitch preparation in the country.Australia’s first Test tour to Pakistan in 24 years has been marred by plenty of criticism over the state of the pitches. Last week’s series opener in Rawalpindi ended in a tame draw, with the surface being rated by the ICC s “below average,” leading to the venue getting a demerit point. ‘Only 14 wickets fell across five days. While Pakistan managed to take all 10 Australian wickets in the first innings, the visitors managed just four overall, with Pakistan making 476 for 4 declared and 252 for 0 when the match was called off.Related

ESPNcricinfo understands the surface for the ongoing Karachi Test was originally meant to assist the spinners. However, it has also been deemed too slow and not to its character. Australia batted for over six sessions after winning the toss to put up 556, with the Test very much in their control despite Abdullah Shafique and Babar Azam having put together an unbroken 171-run third-wicket stand in pursuit of 506.Raja has initiated an overhaul of pitches, and is set to look at installing readymade drop-in pitches from Australia in Lahore and Karachi as early as next year. The PCB is understood to have ordered two drop-in pitches in a bid to simulate Australian surfaces, which they believe would help their players acclimatise better on overseas tours.Lumsden landed in Lahore earlier in the week to begin work. He began at the ICC Academy in 2010 and held the job for two years before rejoining in 2017 as head curator. 1600GMT The story had earlier stated Tony Hemming as the curator PCB had summoned. KL Rahul and Axar Patel ruled out of T20Is against West Indies

Ruturaj Gaikwad and Deepak Hooda brought in as replacements

Shashank Kishore11-Feb-2022India vice-captain KL Rahul and allrounder Axar Patel will miss the upcoming three T20Is against West Indies in Kolkata starting on February 16. Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has recovered completely from Covid-19, and Deepak Hooda have been named as their replacements in India’s 18-member squad.Rahul sustained an upper left hamstring strain while fielding during the second ODI on Wednesday. The injury also prevented his participation in Friday’s final ODI. Axar is recovering from Covid-19 and is in his “final stage of rehabilitation”, as per a BCCI statement.Axar was the only member from India’s T20I squad who hadn’t joined India’s extended biosecure bubble in Ahmedabad – comprising members from both limited-overs squads – ahead of their departure to Kolkata on Saturday evening. Both Axar and Rahul will head to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for further management of their injuries.Gaikwad’s addition leaves India with three opening options alongside captain Rohit Sharma. They also have Ishan Kishan, who is the second wicketkeeper, and Venkatesh Iyer, the allrounder who has had much of his T20 success in recent times as an opener for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL.Gaikwad is capped in the format, having featured in two T20Is on the tour of Sri Lanka last July. His exploits in IPL 2021 have accelerated his journey to India’s white-ball squads. He ended the previous season with a chart-topping 635 runs at an average of 45.35 and strike rate of 136.26.Having debuted in ODIs during the ongoing ODIs against West Indies, Hooda was in prolific form for Rajasthan in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the domestic T20 competition, where he finished as the highest run-getter for the team. His 294 runs, including four half-centuries, came at a strike rate of 168. Hooda previously made it to India’s T20I squad for the home series against Sri Lanka in 2017. He was also part of India’s squad for the Nidahas series in Sri Lanka the following year. The Indian camp had faced issues due to Covid-19 ahead of the ODIs as well, when seven members, including four players – Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer, Gaikwad and reserve fast bowler Navdeep Saini – tested positive.Axar had missed India’s preceding ODI assignment too, in South Africa, reportedly for a stress-related injury.India’s T20I squad: Rohit Sharma (capt), Ishan Kishan, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wk), Venkatesh Iyer, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Ravi Bishnoi, Yuzvendra Chahal, Washington Sundar, Mohammed Siraj, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Avesh Khan, Harshal Patel, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Deepak Hooda.
