West Brom fans react as Stoke prepare to give Saido Berahino the boot

[ad_pod ]

According to The Telegraph, Stoke are considering the possibility of cancelling Saido Berahino’s contract after the striker was, yet again, embroiled in a controversy external to the football pitch.

The number 9 was recently arrested on suspicion of drink driving and the Potters have not let him off the hook easy – he is now training on his own at Clayton Wood but it could be about to get a whole lot worse for the Englishman.

Having signed for the bet365 Stadium outfit for a whopping £12m in 2017, Berahino has been unable to focus on his football and has flopped pretty spectacularly. West Brom, meanwhile, have come out of the deal quite well and will be thanking their lucky stars that they offloaded him when they did.

Everton’s Richarlison linked with Arsenal

Even though they managed to break their poor run of form in their latest Premier League clash by beating Arsenal 2-1 at Goodison Park, the overall fan mood around Everton has not been not particularly positive in recent weeks after failing to win a league game throughout October and November, as well as the departure of the club’s director of football Marcel Brands.

The much-needed win against Mikel Arteta’s side finally gave the fans at Goodison something to celebrate, but it seems as though the fury towards Everton owner Farhad Moshiri could well be stoked up again after recent reports emerged claiming that Toffees attacker Richarlison, who scored against the Gunners last Monday, is of interest to the north London club for a future transfer according to Fichajes.

Since joining the Merseyside club back in the 2018 summer transfer window from Watford in a deal worth a reported fee of around £40m, the Brazilian has scored 45 goals and provide 11 assists in 129 appearances across all competitions, firmly cementing himself as one of Everton’s top attacking talents.

Labelled as a “complete” player by former Toffees manager Carlo Ancelotti, the 24-year-old has scored three goals and provided two assists in 10 Premier League games so far this season.

His performance in the 2-1 win against Arsenal earned Richarlison an overall match rating of 8/10 according to SofaScore, making him the highest-rated player on the night, highlighting his importance to the club when it matters.

Given how Alexandre Lacazette (30) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (32) are Arsenal’s two oldest players, it’s easy to see why they see Richarlison, who is currently earning £110k-per-week at Everton according to Salary Sport, as a potential long-term replacement for one of their current strikers.

With Richarlison’s contract at Goodison Park not set to expire until the summer of 2024, it would be nothing short of a disaster if Moshiri were to sell him any time soon, especially to another Premier League club.

If this were to happen, it would surely not go down well with Everton fans given how much of an attacking threat the Brazilian has provided for the Toffees since his arrival on Merseyside.

Bridge makes claim as Spurs eye Vlahovic

Speaking to GiveMeSport, journalist Micheal Bridge of Sky Sports has made a claim involving Tottenham Hotspur target Dusan Vlahovic as they eye a January swoop.

The Lowdown: Tottenham in Vlahovic hunt…

The links to Fiorentina’s prize asset have seemingly been never-ending since he was a known target for managing director Fabio Paratici in the summer transfer window.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, the arrival of manager Antonio Conte has only increased rumours of Vlahovic potentially joining Tottenham with La Gazzetta (via Sport Witness) even lifting the lid on a transfer meeting in London.

The Serbia international is very much still a target for Tottenham with reliable reporter Matt Law of The Telegraph explaining earlier this week that the club are eyeing a January move alongside Wolves star Adama Traore.

As the Lilywhites set their sights on Vlahovic as a striking alternative to superstar Harry Kane, Sky reporter Bridge has now made his own claim on the situation.

The Latest: Bridge makes Vlahovic claim…

Speaking to GMS, the journalist believes the target man is ‘the real deal’ but also shares his worrying theory that Spurs may have missed the boat.

“He’s proved to people this guy that he’s the real deal. I just worry with Vlahovic that Spurs might have missed the boat there.”

The Verdict: Hope he’s wrong…

Given the 21-year-old’s scintillating form which has even earned him comparisons to Borussia Dortmund superstar Erling Braut Haaland, Spurs supporters will be hoping Bridge is incorrect in his belief and Conte still has a chance of seeing him make the north London move.

As confirmed by Fiorentina CEO Joe Barone (Repubblica via Fabrizio Romano), Vlahovic has down ‘several’ contract offers from La Viola to make him the highest paid player in the club’s history.

This is a clear as crystal indication he is eyeing a move away from the club and we believe Tottenham have a real chance of signing him, especially considering the pull of the Premier League.

Racking up 15 goals and two assists in just 17 top flight matches this campaign, Vlahovic would undoubtedly strengthen Conte’s options either in January or next summer.

Lauded as a ‘force of nature like Romelu Lukaku and Haaland’ by Italian media, the sensational young striker would come as Paratici’s biggest coup yet after 2020/2021 Serie A MVP Cristian Romero.

LFC fans bemoan Oxlade-Chamberlain injury

A number of Liverpool supporters have reacted negatively to a claim that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will need a scan on an injury picked up against Brentford.

The Reds returned to winning ways in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, picking up a much-needed 3-0 victory against the Bees.

Fabinho opened the scoring for Jurgen Klopp’s side just before half-time and Oxlade-Chamberlain headed home in front of the Kop to double the advantage midway through the second half. Takumi Minamino put the game to bed late on.

While it was a good day at the office for Liverpool, Oxlade-Chamberlain limped off late in proceedings, in what looks like another injury concern for the Reds.

According to The Daily Mail’s Dominic King [via Anfield Watch on Twitter], the 28-year-old will undergo a scan to reveal the extent of the problem, in what is a worrying update given the ex-Arsenal midfielder’s dreadful record on the injury front since coming to Anfield in 2017.

Conte offers Spurs gem new contract

Tottenham Hotspur have offered academy prospect Tobi Omole a new contract after he was named in Antonio Conte’s squad for the Premier League…

What’s the word?

That’s according to allnigeriasoccer.com, who claim that the 22-year-old defender isn’t eligible to qualify as a U21 or youth player anymore but the Italian head coach has included him as a senior member of the team.

Omole is yet to make his senior bow for Spurs but did feature on the bench for their Premier League clash against Crystal Palace earlier in the season and has trained numerous times with the first team since Conte’s arrival in November.

The former Arsenal graduate has also been offered fresh terms ahead of next season, too.

Cesar Azpilicueta 2.0

Omole is capable of playing in pretty much any role across the backline, making him a very intriguing option for the Italian head coach and one that could earn some comparisons to one member of his title-winning squad at Chelsea, Cesar Azpilicueta.

Conte has very much tried to introduce a similar formation to one that once sealed the Premier League trophy, a 3-4-3, which saw the Spanish veteran partner a ball-player in David Luiz and an aggressive tackler in Gary Cahill.

Well, in Eric Dier and Cristian Romero, he has players to fit the mould of the latter duo. And for now, it’s Ben Davies taking up the other role. However, with plans to hand Omole a new deal, Conte may well see a future star fit to take the reins eventually.

As per Lilywhites insider John Wenham, the 22-year-old centre-back is considered to be a “top young talent” within the club and was even tipped to make a debut against Newcastle United back in October.

The young gem is also a left-footer, which will only bolster his claims of replacing Davies in the starting XI as the Welshman has largely been deployed at centre-back due to him being the only defensive-minded left-footer in the squad.

It may be a while before he truly comes to the fold but it’s clear that he has already impressed Conte enough for him to not only be handed fresh terms but also named in the official squad for the remainder of the season.

In Omole, the Italian head coach could well discover a new Azpilicueta.

AND in other news, Spurs “nightmare” who lost ball every 4 mins vs Brighton has given Conte a big dilemma…

Return of Dominic Calvert-Lewin imminent

Everton have been long suffering an injury crisis which has nearly forced Rafael Benitez to field makeshift teams over the last few weeks, facing the prospect of adding academy talents into the squad just to have enough players to see out fixture commitments.

The injury issues have piled up, with key players missing for large chunks of the Premier League season so far, and these issues have contributed to the poor form and performances we have seen from the Toffees over the course of the first half of the season, with Benitez’s side currently 15th in the table.

One man who has been out with a long-term injury is star striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who was sidelined in September with an injury sustained to his quadriceps, with a setback in October rendering him unavailable ever since – until now.

The £72k-p/w striker was spotted in training on Friday when Everton posted images of the 24-year-old on their official Twitter channel, and many fans were ecstatic with the long awaited return, as was his manager when he spoke about his return to action in the pre-match press conference on Friday ahead of the weekend’s fixture against Brighton.

Likening the forward’s return to a new signing, Benitez gushed: “He’s a massive signing for us in the second part of the league.

“We are considering all of these things but he is training really well and he is really happy because he is with the team and is ready to play and score goals.”

The striker’s return will be a welcome one as Richarlison remains injured, and fellow long-term injury victim Jean-Philippe Gbamin just can’t cut it as a prolific scorer for the Merseyside club, with no goals or assists from his four appearances so far this term.

Calvert-Lewin’s presence on the pitch will surely offer far superior attacking prowess, more creativity, intimidation of opponents thanks to his 6 ft 4 stature, and of course, most importantly, goals.

The match against Brighton is the first the Toffees have played in over a fortnight, and although the postponements are annoying for keeping up consistency and match fitness, it has given the 24-year-old some extra time to work on his fitness in training without risking another setback.

It is unsure as to whether he will actually start for Everton this weekend, but he will likely be in the squad on the bench at the very least, as Benitez will be desperate to get three points on the board in the Toffees’ first game of the new year.

Considering the continued absence of Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin’s return could be just what the Blues need in terms of offering a threat in the final third, with the team netting just four goals over their last seven matches.

Yerry Mina could return for Everton

Everton could be set to receive a significant injury boost ahead of their Premier League encounter with Arsenal at Goodison Park this evening.

What’s the word?

In his pre-match press conference, Rafa Benitez revealed star defender Yerry Mina is in contention to make his long-awaited comeback from injury after making a successful return to first-team training.

“Yerry Mina has today done part of training session, so he is getting closer, we will see how he reacts in the next couple of days to see if he’s available or not, ” the Spanish tactician told reporters.

But that wasn’t where the good news ended for everyone associated with the Toffees. Striker Salomon Rondon could be a surprise inclusion in the matchday squad after limping off against Liverpool, while Andre Gomes is also available for selection once again.

“Rondon, we are assessing him, we are waiting, he is feeling better but we need to wait for the scan and see how he’s doing.

“Andre Gomes has been training, we are missing just Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Tom Davies, the other players at the moment are available,” Benitez concluded.

Rafa Benitez will be buzzing

News that Everton are set to be boosted by the return of up to three first-team stars will leave Benitez absolutely buzzing. The Blues are currently enduring an eight-game winless run in the top-flight, piling the pressure on the 61-year-old.

Therefore, it’s the potential comeback of Mina that the former Real Madrid boss will be eagerly anticipating the most, given his importance to the team.

The Colombia international made an impressive start to the current campaign, losing on just one occasion before picking up a thigh problem.

And his underlying numbers highlight Mina’s influence over proceedings. As per WhoScored, the 27-year-old has averaged 1.5 interceptions per league game this season, four clearances and 2.8 aerial duels won, placing him in the top four for each metric compared to his teammates.

In the South American’s absence, Everton have picked up just one point from a possible 18, highlighting the significance of Benitez’s latest update on his fitness situation. He will be absolutely elated if he’s able to select him this evening.

Everton ace Mina yellow for Colombia

Many Everton fans have been left buzzing over some international news involving Yerry Mina.

As shared by Toffee TV on their Twitter page, the central defender will now miss Colombia’s FIFA World Cup qualifying game against Argentina on Tuesday due to suspension, after he picked up a yellow card in their most recent qualifier in the 1-0 loss against Peru.

It means that Mina should now be able to return to Goodison Park, with their next league fixture not coming until Tuesday 8th February away to Newcastle United, three days after an FA Cup clash with Brentford next weekend.

This should give the the 27-year-old enough time to complete any necessary health protocols and recover for the clash, which would have been a doubt had he been able to face Argentina.

The Toffees have only lost three games in the top flight so far this term when he has played, and so having him back would be a big boost.

Rangers handed Sam Johnstone boost

A big summer transfer claim has emerged that will impact Rangers’ plans for the upcoming window at Ibrox…

What’s the talk?

Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett has confirmed that Gers’ transfer target Sam Johnstone is set to leave his current club at the end of the season.

Gio van Bronckhorst and Ross Wilson are reportedly interested in bringing the shot-stopper to Glasgow and they will now be able to snap him up for nothing if they can win the race for his signature, amid stiff competition from other teams.

Dorsett Tweeted: “#mufc and #thfc to battle it out for the signature of goalkeeper Sam Johnstone in the summer. Johnstone won’t sign a new #wba contract, when it expires at the end of the season, as he seeks a return to the Premier League. Bruce said on Saturday he expects him to leave.”

Good news for Rangers

This is good news for the club for multiple reasons.

Firstly, this claim means that the Gers will not have to pay a penny in transfer fees for Johnstone. His deal with West Brom runs out later this year and he will become a free agent, which means that no club will have to deal with the Baggies to agree a fee.

The only concern will be his wages, but the lack of a transfer fee will, hopefully, offset any issues with budgeting for his salary. This, therefore, is why the club will be buzzing with this update as it lowers the potential cost of a deal for the England international.

It is also great news for Rangers as they are in need of a new goalkeeper to replace Allan McGregor next season. The 40-year-old has made four errors, three directly leading to goals, in the Premiership this season – costing van Bronckhorst’s side vital points against the likes of Ross County and Motherwell, making two direct errors in the former and being beaten at his near post for the equaliser in the latter.

Meanwhile, in the Premier League last time out, Johnstone made zero errors directly leading to goals as he averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.03. He is also 11 years younger than the current Gers number one and this means that he could be the first choice between the sticks at Ibrox for many, many, years to come – if they are able to bring him through the door.

It is now down to Wilson to make sure he can capitalise on the Englishman’s availability to snap him up ahead of the other interested parties this summer…

How is Joe Hugill doing after leaving Sunderland?

Sunderland’s youth academy has produced a number of important players for the club over recent years, with the likes of Lynden Gooch, Elliot Embleton and Dan Neil all becoming key parts of the team.

The club also have homegrown duo Anthony Patterson and Benjamin Kimpioka part of the first-team squad, while the likes of Norwich City-owned Bali Mumba, Stoke City striker Josh Maja and Hull City star George Honeyman have all gone on to make excellent starts to their careers after leaving the Stadium of Light.

One man they will be having nightmares over letting go so early is 18-year-old Joe Hugill, who signed for Manchester United back in the summer of 2018 for a £297k fee.

Having scored 12 goals in 21 games this season across the Red Devils’ youth teams, he has slowly become one of the Premier League giants’ most exciting prospects.

“Joe Hugill’s progress has come as a pleasant surprise to the coaching staff at Manchester United who recognised his potential when they brought him in from Sunderland,” said Sky Sports News reporter James Cooper about Hugill’s development last year.

“But the speed of that progress has exceeded expectations, bearing in mind he’s only been at the club for three months.

“Hugill was part of a recruitment drive that has seen some of Europe’s best young talent arrive at Manchester United in recent weeks to not only bolster the club’s Academy but also provide Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with more options further down the line.”

With comparisons made between him and Harry Kane due to his ability to hold the ball up, link-up play and finish clinically, we may finally get to see more of the 6 foot2 forward over the next few seasons, either playing in the Premier League 2, or out-on-loan at a Football League side.

While Sunderland striker Ross Stewart has notched 22 goals already this season, the next highest goalscorer is Embleton with five, level with Nathan Broadhead – and despite goals not particular being the team’s biggest issue, if the North-East club kept Hugill for just a little longer, he would have thrived in League One, and the transfer fee they earned for him could have been far larger.

It’s safe to say this was somewhat of a howler from Stewart Donald to let him move away so easily and indeed cheaply.
