Ronchi's 77 off 41 consigns Lahore to sixth straight loss

The result meant a brisk half-century from Anton Devcich and a late blitz from Brendon McCullum came to nought, and Lahore remained winless this season

The Report by Arun Venugopal08-Mar-2018

ICC

Luke Ronchi’s stunning assault at the top of the order backed up Islamabad United’s disciplined bowling performance and condemned Lahore Qalandars to a six-wicket defeat, their sixth loss in as many games. Ronchi’s 41-ball 77 meant Islamabad chased down a target of 164 with 2.2 overs to spare. This was Islamabad’s second victory over a hapless Lahore side this season, the first one having come in a Super-Over finish.Ronchi and JP Duminy set the tone for the chase with a 47-run opening stand in 4.3 overs. Sunil Narine received a rude welcome as Ronchi smashed his first delivery for a six, but he hit back two balls later by having Duminy caught at slip. Narine would go on to take two more wickets, including Ronchi’s, but it was the latter who had the last laugh. During the course of his innings, which included five fours and six sixes, Ronchi brought out his complete repertoire – the swivel-pull, cut, drive and even the flat-batted smash. When he tonked Aamer Yamin over long-off in the ninth over, he brought up his half-century off 22 balls, the joint-fastest in the PSL. When Ronchi perished in the 16th over, Islamabad needed only 13 to win.In contrast to their performance for the most part of the match, Lahore had started in rousing fashion with the bat, with Fakhar Zaman and Anton Devcich (62 off 42 balls) raising an opening stand of 56 in 6.4 overs. Zaman led the way in the early exchanges as he biffed, pulled and cut his way to 34 off 24 balls. He was smartly caught behind by Ronchi off Duminy’s bowling, but Devcich sustained the momentum. Playing his first game of the tournament, Devcich, much like Fakhar, revelled in leg-side strokes. Often, he cleared his leg and swatted the ball between long-on and deep midwicket. While overs six to nine brought 37 runs to Lahore, there was a lull in the scoring after Agha Salman was dismissed in the 12th over. With Denesh Ramdin, promoted to No.4, struggling to middle the ball, Devcich found himself under more pressure but couldn’t accelerate the tempo. Eventually both the batsmen perished in the 17th over bowled by Faheem Ashraf. Captain Brendon McCullum made a furious late dash with an unbeaten 12-ball 33, but that would eventually prove inadequate. Ashraf picked up three wickets for Islamabad, while legspinner Shadab Khan finished with figures of 4-0-15-1.Where the match was won
Before this match, Ramdin hadn’t scored a single boundary in the PSL this season. It wouldn’t change by the time his painful crawl to 9 off 20 balls came to an end. What then remained baffling was McCullum’s ploy to promote Ramdin ahead of himself at No. 4. Ramdin came in with the score on 101 in 11.2 overs, and departed with the addition of 20 runs in five overs. His inability to time the ball had an adverse effect on Devcich as well during a period where Lahore went eight overs without a boundary. They managed only 69 runs in the last 10 overs, and in retrospect Lahore’s cause would have been better served had McCullum faced more than the dozen balls he did.The men that won it
As much as Ramdin’s knock contributed to Lahore’s slowdown, Shadab’s role in sapping the life out of the innings can’t be overstated. Introduced into the attack at the halfway mark, the 19-year-old legspinner gave away seven runs in his first over. He then went on to concede only eight more runs in his next three. Ramdin had a particularly hard time as he swished and groped at the ball without being able to connect his bat. Shadab’s parsimony effectively halted Islamabad’s march to a total in the range of 180.Where they stand
Islamabad jumped from fifth to second with their fourth win. Lahore, meanwhile, continued to languish at the bottom of the table, and while they aren’t mathematically out of reckoning for a spot in the playoffs, they have their task cut out.

Rangers: "Solid" £27k-p/w Gers ace opens up on his Ibrox future

Glasgow Rangers defender Ben Davies has opened up on his near summer exit, whilst also sharing his stance on his long-term future in the Scottish Premiership.

How much did Ben Davies cost Rangers?

Last summer, Davies put pen to paper at Ibrox for a reported £4m fee following his permanent move from Liverpool, and during his time at the club so far, he’s made a total of 39 appearances north of the border.

The Teddy Bears centre-back still has another three years remaining on his contract with Michael Beale’s side, but having made just one league start this season, the fact that he is low down in the pecking order saw him linked with an exit before the deadline.

Championship side Stoke City reportedly saw a late loan approach for the 28-year-old turned down by Ibrox chiefs, with the same outlet claiming that Alex Neil was hoping to form a reunion having previously managed him during his time at Preston North End, and the player has now lifted the lid on what really happened behind the scenes.

Is Ben Davies leaving Rangers?

Speaking to The Times, Davies admitted that he never considered leaving Rangers over the summer despite strong interest from the Potters, and he's made it clear that he wants to fight for his place under Beale.

As quoted by Football League World, he said: “I'm not sure what was said above me [within Rangers] but as far as I was concerned I was a Rangers player and I wasn't looking to move. The manager said I was an important part of what he was looking to do going forward. So I took that in and made sure I went and got myself fit.

"I think the manager has shown a lot of faith in me since he's been here. I think it's time I repaid that and put some good performances in. I've got a good relationship with him so I want to work for him.

"I felt good fitness-wise. My lungs felt good. I've definitely got a point to prove going forward and I thought I'd start proving that point on Saturday, but obviously I've got a lot more work to do."

Glagow Rangers defender Ben Davies.

How good is Ben Davies?

Whilst Rangers will know that Davies has never really had a fair chance to prove what he’s capable of, Beale surely must have noticed the high standard of his performances when he does hand him an opportunity having been hailed “solid” by journalist Josh Bunting.

The Ibrox outfit’s £27k-per-week earner managed an outstanding nine aerial wins and two clearances during his only league appearance this season, via WhoScored, highlighting the physical presence that he adds to the defensive backline.

The CAA Base Ltd client, who is naturally left-footed, also has the ability to operate out wide at left-back and slightly higher up in the midfield alongside his usual role in the centre, so his versatility is yet another attribute that is useful for the boss to have at his disposal.

Fabrizio Romano: "Brilliant" Chelsea player now desperate to quit next year

Reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has shared an important update on the future of Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga amid his current loan spell at Real Madrid.

Who has left Chelsea?

Mauricio Pochettino perhaps oversaw one of the biggest transfer overhauls in the Premier League this summer, with a plethora of players both arriving and departing Stamford Bridge.

Christopher Nkunku, Axel Disasi, Nicolas Jackson, Lesley Ugochukwu, Robert Sanchez, Romeo Lavia, Moises Caicedo and Cole Palmer all put pen to paper on moves to west London before September 1.

Meanwhile, Kalidou Koulibaly, N'Golo Kante, Edouard Mendy, Arrizabalaga, Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Cesar Azpilicueta, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ethan Ampadu and Callum Hudson-Odoi all sealed moves the other way.

Chelsea are taking a bit of time to get going under Pochettino, though; winning just one top flight match and drawing another whilst suffering defeats at the hands of West Ham and Nottingham Forest.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Defender Ben Chilwell, speaking after his side's latest 1-0 defeat to Forest, said Chelsea have much to improve upon ahead of a long season.

"Very frustrating result and everyone is very disappointed in the changing room right now," explained Chilwell post-match.

"If you look at the stats we dominated the game, had the possession, but the most important stat is the goals. We lost in that department and lost the game, that is the black and white of it and we need to improve."

There is still work to be done to Bridge, but one player who won't be a part of the project is Arrizabalaga.

The Spaniard, currently on a temporary stint at La Liga giants Real Madrid, is apparently eyeing up a permanent move away from Chelsea next year.

Arrizabalaga has seemingly been replaced by summer signing Sanchez from Brighton, with renowned transfer source Romano sharing a fresh update latest on the former's future.

“Kepa mentioned that his dream is to continue at Real Madrid, and this is the reality," said Romano on his YouTube channel.

“From what I am told, Kepa’s priority is to find another opportunity in 2024. Real Madrid, or another club. He feels that, with Chelsea, something is now broken. This is why the expectation between Chelsea and Kepa is to part ways.”

What happened to Kepa Arrizabalaga?

The 28-year-old signed for Chelsea from Athletic Bilbao in 2018, a transfer which broke the world record for most money spent on a goalkeeper.

Arrizabalaga arrived for £71.6 million, but fast-forward half a decade later, supporters will be looking back on his Chelsea career as a real mixed bag.

The shot-stopper has performed well in parts, though; even earning praise from Blues legend Petr Cech.

“I must touch on Kepa, too," wrote Cech in a column for Chelsea's official website last term (via The Standard).

"He had to fill those big boots while Edou has been away, and he has been brilliant in all those games under even more scrutiny than usual.

“You need a strong team and every person ready to help. The goalkeeping group work so hard together to make sure they are all ready for when the moment comes, so Kepa deserves credit too.”

Shakib, Nurul fined for breaching code of conduct

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan and reserve player Nurul Hasan have both been fined 25% of their match fees for separate incidents during the T20I against Sri Lanka in Colombo. Both players have also received one demerit point each for breaching Level 1 of the ICC code of conduct. In the final over of a tense chase, Shakib gestured towards the Bangladesh batsmen Mahmudullah and Rubel Hossain to come off the field, from the edge of the boundary, while remonstrating against an umpiring decision. He was found to have indulged in “conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game”.Nurul was seen arguing with Sri Lanka captain Thisara Perera after he was sent by the team on to the field of play to pass on a message to the two batsmen. He was found guilty of violating Article 2.1.2, which deals with “conduct that brings the game into disrepute”.This was the first time either player had picked up a demerit point since the system came into effect on September 22, 2016. The BCB said in a release that it “regrets the unfortunate happenings” and that the conduct of the Bangladesh team “in certain instances was unacceptable on a cricket field”.”We understand that the events may have transpired due to the importance of the match and the pressure that comes with it but feel that the expected level of professionalism was not exhibited by the team while dealing with a tense situation in the game,” the BCB release further said. “The Bangladesh Team members have been reminded of their responsibility in upholding the spirit of cricket at all times.”On Saturday morning, both Shakib and Nurul pleaded guilty to the offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by match referee Chris Broad and, as such, there was no need for a formal hearing.”Friday’s incidents were disappointing as you don’t want to see such player behavior during any level of cricket,” Broad said in a statement. “I understand that it was a tense and an edge-of-the-seat match with place in the final on the line, but the actions of the two players were unacceptable and cannot be condoned as they clearly went overboard. Had the fourth umpire not stopped Shakib and the fielders remonstrating, and then the on-field umpires not intervened between Nurul and Thisara, things could have become worse.”The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Raveendra Wimalasiri and Ruchira Palliyaguruge, third umpire Ranmore Martinesz and fourth umpire Lyndon Hannibal.

West Indies reduced to 12 men as Permaul injures ankle

The left-arm spinner bowled just three balls on T20I debut; no replacement is likely to be flown in for the series that finishes on Tuesday

Veerasammy Permaul gestures as he lies on a stretcher after being injured•AFP

West Indies spinner Veerasammy Permaul will play no further part in the ongoing series against Pakistan because of a ruptured muscle.Permaul, 28, had bowled just three balls on his T20I debut at the National Stadium Karachi on Sunday before he pulled up with a twisted left-ankle. He received treatment for several minutes by the physio before being stretchered off the field. He was taken to a local hospital, and did not bat in the second innings. This stretches an already thin West Indies touring squad to just 12 available players, and given the series ends on Tuesday, it is extremely unlikely a replacement player will be called up.That means West Indies are set to hand a maiden international cap to one of Odean Smith or Andre McCarthy, the two players left out of their playing XI on Sunday.West Indies will be looking to bounce back from a heavy defeat in the first game, where they were shot out for 60 chasing 204.

Arsenal: Arteta must bench ‘useless’ signing who lost the ball every 5 touches

Arsenal will likely still be delighted with last night's EFL Cup triumph over Brentford, as their battling 1-0 away victory saw them extend their unbeaten run for the campaign to seven across all competitions.

Whilst many stood out, there were also a host of disappointments, who failed to step up during their opportunity to impress…

Who played well for Arsenal vs Brentford?

Jorginho was not one of them though, whose 8.1 Sofascore rating in the middle of the park marked the highest of anyone on the pitch as he made a mammoth seven tackles during the contest.

Given the turmoil surrounding his start, after his second-half gaffe gifted Tottenham Hotspur a second equaliser last weekend, to bounce back with such poise and purpose is the mark of an experienced leader who will likely prove instrumental in their potential success for the season.

Another who shone was Jakub Kiwior, who again was given his opportunity to impress, admittedly in a less familiar left-back role. Despite that, a 93% pass accuracy alongside one key pass suggests he rose to the challenge, whilst still maintaining two interceptions and two clearances, one of which was off the line to prevent a goal, via Sofascore.

Mikel Arteta will be delighted with the way these two out-of-favour stars performed upon earning their recall, but such stellar displays actually exacerbate yet another poor showing from the £65m man Kai Havertz.

How did Kai Havertz play vs Brentford?

Once again starting in that carefully crafted left-side of a midfield three, the German is expected to create from deep whilst using his intelligence to push forward when possible without risking the defensive integrity of the side.

This is a role still new to the former Chelsea man, who at Stamford Bridge again suffered from his own versatility, often being deployed in positions that were unsuited to his skillset. It seems like lightning is set to strike twice.

Although his figures are not outstandingly bad, it marked another mediocre showing with little to write home about, which is far from what is expected given the huge figure spent in the summer.

As such, he would only manage an 81% pass accuracy, enduring a tough time in the engine room losing 50% of the 18 duels he competed in, as per Sofascore.

However, and perhaps most alarmingly, the 24-year-old would only manage 62 touches all game, yet still somehow lost possession a whopping 12 times. That meant that, for every five touches Havertz enjoyed, the Bees would dispossess him and kickstart their own attacks.

Given he managed just one key pass, it was almost like his on-pitch exploits boosted the opposition more than his own side.

Although Arteta will be keen to guarantee his hefty investment soon pays dividends, he must also ensure that it does not come to the detriment of the team. After all, pundit Andy Goldstein sought to lambast the versatile midfielder, with former Sunderland striker Darren Bent coming to his defence.

The former would tell talkSPORT "I can see he’s rubbish", to which his co-host responded: "He’s not rubbish, he’s a good footballer." This spurred on the pundit to go one step further, boldly claiming: "I’m being honest, he’s useless."

Given what Havertz has shown in an Arsenal shirt, it would be hard to argue with Goldstein's summation at the moment. The hope will be that he can turn such form around, but not before he is dropped after another average display in which he was notoriously profligate in possession.

FICA raises concerns over PCB's player restrictions

The global players’ body said limiting players to two T20 leagues a year could amount to “unlawful restraints of trade”

Umar Farooq10-May-2018Restricting players to two T20 leagues a year, as the PCB has done, could amount to “unlawful restraints of trade”, according to FICA (the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations), the global players’ body. And even as the PCB finally sought to explain the rationale behind the policy, the restriction has also raised concerns among a number of player agents, who believe this could hurt the national side’s cause. The PCB’s policy, announced yesterday restricts their centrally-contracted players to playing only two leagues per season including the Pakistan Super League (PSL). On paper, it means in-demand cricketers such as Shadab Khan and Rumman Raees can only play in one league other than the PSL in a year.”Blanket restrictions on players from playing in T20 leagues, which limit their ability to earn a living as professional cricketers, is not the answer to fundamental issues with the structure of the game,” Tony Irish, FICA’s executive chairman, told ESPNcricinfo. “Structural change is needed. Although one needs to respect a country’s right to manage workload of its contracted players this isn’t achieved by one blanket restriction applying to all players. As we have seen in other countries this type of arbitrary restriction is more likely to result in players electing not to sign national contracts, or to retire from international cricket.”They are then lost to the international game. Once players are out of contract there is no legal basis to restrict them, even under ICC regulation, and such restrictions are likely to constitute unlawful restraints of trade under the laws of most countries.”Pakistan’s players do not have a players’ association so FICA has no jurisdiction in the matter as such. And recent history between the two organisations is not especially cordial. But, as FICA recognised, apart from Pakistan players not having a united voice, they are among the lowest paid international cricketers (as a survey by showed.)The PCB explained that the policy was a result of an especially busy international season of cricket. “If we look at our calendar year until 2019 World Cup we are going to play 28 ODIs, 14 T20s, 8 Tests and for this we need to manage the workload,” Haroon Rasheed, director cricket operations, said in Karachi. “We all thought that in terms of workload we have to limit our players in foreign leagues because you already have limited resources available in ODI and T20 so God forbid if anyone got out injured for a longer period of time then our World Cup campaign would be affected.”Rasheed acknowledged, however, that the policy would be reviewed on a regular basis. “We have an exception or rule as well for those who only play T20 format,” he added. “To deal with special cases not covered under the rules, i.e for exceptions, a four-member committee will decide to issue NOC for players’ participation in any additional league.”Though the exceptions clause suggests a way out of a blanket restriction – it could effectively mean continuing with a policy of NOCs issued on a case-by-case basis – agents who represent Pakistani players have expressed concern. After their Champions Trophy win and a rise to the top of the T20I rankings, a number of Pakistani players were in demand in most leagues other than the IPL last year. But even then, the PCB suddenly revoked NOCs of 13 Pakistan players participating in the CPL and the English domestic circuit, to participate in the National T20 Cup. That was slotted to take place in August but eventually did not go ahead then, leaving all stakeholders frustrated.”Pakistan players are prominent in T20 leagues around the world and this limit is going to hurt both players and PCB,” one player agent told ESPNcricinfo. “Other countries all have the option of the IPL. I can understand there’s a lot of cricket happening these days and players have a human limit. But a blanket approach of limiting 35 guys is harsh. If there’s no national duty and it’s possible to play three leagues, why would we limit it? Unless our first-class competes with world level, which is not the case.”
