  • Speaks out after final La Liga game
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Greenwood joined Getafe on a season-long loan from United last September and went onto score 10 goals and bag eight assists in 35 appearances. Now his time with the La Liga club has come to an end, the 22-year-old has sent an emotional parting message to supporters. The one-time England international cut a wistful tone, however, as his last game for the club ended in defeat against Real Mallorca, and saw team-mate David Soria suffer a head injury that caused him to lose consciousness, before being taken to hospital.

  • WHAT MASON GREENWOOD SAID

Alongside a host of photos from his time at the club, Greenwood wrote on Instagram: "Incredibly grateful to the Getafe family and fans for an amazing season, Thank you for making me feel welcomed and one of your own. I enjoyed every second, alongside my teammates and club. A bitter sweet ending, but it was a pleasure to play for you, I wish you all the best."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The forward may have played his last game for United, with the Red Devils academy product linked with a host of teams across Europe as they reportedly seek to sanction a permanent sale in the summer window. His contract at Old Trafford expires in 2025 but United do have the option to extend that by a further 12 months. Wherever his future lies, it seems Greenwood will not return to Getafe, going by his comments.

There is no sign of the five-time Ballon d’Or winner hanging up his boots any time soon, with the all-time great still going strong at 39 years of age. He registered 50 goals for Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr in the 2023-24 campaign, breaking more records along the way.

    WHAT O'SHEA SAID

Ronaldo is now preparing for European Championship duty – his 11th major tournament – and O’Shea can see him remaining part of the Portugal set-up when heading into retirement. The Irishman, who is currently in caretaker charge of his country, told reporters ahead of a friendly date with CR7 on Tuesday: “Knowing the type of person he is, the dedication and professionalism he has, I am sure he has plans to carry on in terms of Portugal and where he’s going to go. I’m sure he has ambitions, further down the line, to manage his country also in tournaments to come – if he wants to bring those pressures on him. He’s had no problem taking the pressure of his country throughout his career. Whatever his next steps will be, I am sure they will be positive for Portugal.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Questions have been asked of whether Ronaldo can still impact proceedings at the very highest level, as he enters the latter stages of a quite remarkable career, but O’Shea – who spent several years alongside the Portuguese at Old Trafford – added on the evergreen frontman maintaining stunning standards: “You see in Saudi, he’s scored some goals for this team, and you also see the impact he’s had with his goal-scoring for Portugal in the campaign to qualify for the Euros, too. I’ve no doubt whatever plans or rotations Portugal will have to use him, to maximise how far they get in the tournament, I think Ronaldo will be a key part of that, definitely.”

Ronaldo has taken in 206 appearances for his country, scoring 128 goals, and will believe that he has what it takes – as a talismanic captain – to help Portugal chase down another continental crown to sit alongside the one that they claimed back in 2016.

Mehidy Hasan is understood to be out of danger after being struck on the side of a head by a ball during a net session in Southampton. The incident occurred while Mehidy was giving an interview, on the sidelines of the practice session, on the eve of Bangladesh’s match against Afghanistan. A concussion report is yet to be completed, though.Mehidy apparently wanted to continue batting in the nets but was not allowed to, according to the Bangladesh media manager Rabeed Imam. The injury to the offspinner is the latest concern for a Bangladesh team riddled with fitness worries. Mohammad Saifuddin and Mosaddek Hossain missed the game against Australia due to a back spasm and hurt shoulder respectively, while Mushfiqur Rahim, Tamim Iqbal and Mashrafe Mortaza are all carrying injuries as well.

Paul Merson singles out high-earning Chelsea star amid Premier League form

Sky Sports pundit and former Arsenal star Paul Merson has singled out a high-earning Chelsea player for some of his lacklustre performances.

Chelsea gear up for Wolves clash

Mauricio Pochettino will be looking to put Chelsea's latest performance, a 4-1 humbling away to Liverpool, behind him as he attempts to salvage something from what has been yet another disappointing Premier League season.

Chelsea could now finally unleash "incredible" 18 y/o after Broja exit

The Albanian’s departure opens the door to a young talent.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Feb 2, 2024

Europe now looks a dubious proposition at best for the west Londoners who, despite a slight uptick in form with three wins on the bounce before their trip to Anfield, were brutally reminded of their shortcomings by Jurgen Klopp's title-chasers.

Chelsea's need for a world-class striker is pretty evident, with only Man United scoring fewer goals than them out of any side in the top half. Star Napoli striker Victor Osimhen continues to be linked with a summer move to Stamford Bridge, but in the meantime, they must find a way to become more potent in the final third without the Nigerian's help.

Pochettino, speaking ahead of their clash with Wolves this weekend, does say to trust in the process and even makes a Liverpool comparison (via football.london).

"It's important to realise. It's true we want the result today and it was difficult to wait. In the third year of [Jurgen Klopp at] Liverpool, I think they came to Wembley, we were in Tottenham and we beat them 4-1. No-one said it was the end of the world for Liverpool," said Pochettino.

"After that, look what happened. They won the Premier League, the Champions League. In year four, they started to work, that is why after six months when you go and play against Liverpool in the situation they are in, fighting for the Premier League, and have been very consistent for the last few years, it's a solid team. With all the circumstances that happened during the game, and to say that we were not good enough and they were better than us, I think we were there.

"We need to move on and prepare for the next game. It's only the game that we lose."

A few Chelsea players have been criticised for their form over this difficult campaign, but Sky pundit Merson has written for Sportskeeda that £150,000-per-week ace Moises Caicedo quite simply needs to be doing better.

Merson singles out Caicedo amid poor Chelsea form

Indeed, Merson has singled out Caicedo for his poor Chelsea performances this season – claiming his midfield showing, among others, was "embarrassing" against Liverpool.

"Caicedo was signed for €4m by Brighton a few years ago, now suddenly he's the most expensive player in Premier League history? You can't improve that much in 2-3 years, it's impossible," wrote Merson.

"You watch Caicedo and compare him to Declan Rice – it's like chalk and cheese! For that fee, you have to grab games by the scruff of the neck and make your presence felt, and I can't remember him doing that too many times at Chelsea. The Blues' midfield was absolutely ripped to shreds against Liverpool and it was embarrassing, to say the least."

The Ecuadorian has made 19 league appearances this season as a mainstay of Pochettino's squad, but according to WhoScored, he just about features in their top 10 best-performers by average match rating.

Finch combines forces with Behrendorff and Starc to put Australia in semi-finals

England’s plans of qualifying for the final four hang in the balance after a second successive loss, this one by 64 runs

The Report by Daniel Brettig25-Jun-2019As it happenedAustralia played Test match cricket in miniature to get the better of England and a set of conditions at Lord’s that were not really in the blueprint for Eoin Morgan’s side ahead of a tournament in which they now face the tightest of ropes to qualify for the semi-finals. Australia, meanwhile, are now in the final four, the first team to get there. The cut and thrust of this Lord’s ODI was a world away from the virtual home run derby of Trent Bridge a year ago. That day, England tallied a gargantuan 481 and seemingly set the tone for the way this World Cup would be played. Yet, in the crucible of a global tournament played in the damp of an early summer beset by rain, Australia’s more deliberate plans, built on a stable, steady top order and a collective of pace and class with the ball have held up; the fireworks of Nottingham might as well have taken place on Mars.Australia captain Aaron Finch deservedly claimed the match award for a century that represented not only leadership by example but also a personal triumph over technical troubles that had made him so susceptible to the ball seaming into him. It would have been hard to imagine conditions more conducive to such a risk than these, but Finch overcame them with help from David Warner to set up a platform that, if not fully exploited, was enough to take the Australians to the sort of score they have commonly defended in recent months. They did so via a bowling attack chosen specifically for England. Jason Behrendorff had played only once before this game, and Nathan Lyon not at all, but they gelled beautifully with Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Marcus Stoinis to unbalance England at the start and then snuff out any subsequent rearguards before they assumed troubling proportions.Behrendorff’s swing and guile, if revelatory to Lord’s observers, were no surprise to those who know his best days for Western Australia. Starc’s speed and swing up front, then his late swerving yorker afterwards, were exactly what Finch required. In all this and another sublime fielding display, the Australians continued their march to a peak of performance at the definitive end of this World Cup. A sixth title is now closer than many, perhaps, expected before the tournament.Buckets of overnight rain drenched St John’s Wood and there was some question over the start time, but the weather cleared enough to allow for the scheduled toss, though not after Jofra Archer had required a fitness test to play. That interlude did not dissuade Morgan from bowling first on a green-tinged surface when calling correctly, although Finch admitted he had been somewhat more equivocal having called up Lyon and Behrendorff as replacements.Memories of Australia’s twin collapses to the moving ball in Birmingham and Nottingham in the 2015 Ashes are still fresh, and Warner was a victim of both. But, alongside Finch, he was to carve out an opening stand that confounded the expectations of an overcast morning, aided by English imprecision when choosing their length of attack. Too often short of a length if not outright short, they also saw numerous Australian edges avoid going to hand or falling short, meaning 44 for no loss was the tally after ten nervy overs for both sides.Acceleration followed, both Warner and Finch finding the boundary and the captain also clearing it twice, as English brows furrowed in the middle and in the stands. Warner looked as fluent as he has all tournament and it was a surprise when, having crafted a third century stand with Finch for the Cup, he was fooled by a Moeen Ali offbreak that held in the pitch and ballooned to Joe Root, running around from backward point.Aaron Finch’s second century of the World Cup took Austalia into the semis•Getty ImagesUsman Khawaja was chosen to accompany Finch, and together they lifted the Australians to an imposing 173 for 1 after 32 overs – a platform from which a score of 350 was plausible on paper, if less likely in the prevailing conditions. Khawaja’s fall only succeeded in bringing Steven Smith to the middle with plenty of overs to spare, and when Finch went to his hundred via a Chris Woakes misfield at fine leg it appeared the Australians were well on top.But Finch chose the wrong moment to try a hook, top edging straight to Woakes the very next ball and reproaching himself with all the fury of a captain who knew he had done exactly what he has asked teammates not to – squander an opportunity to turn a century into a monument. His anguish was to be intensified by the decline that followed, as Glenn Maxwell followed two memorable blows off Archer with a wafty edge behind off the rapid Mark Wood, Stoinis was run out over a disputed second run with Smith, and the former captain lost his timing and his wicket while trying to get runs around the corner. It all added up to the loss of 6 for 86, and at 259 for 7 England may have been chasing as little as 270. However, some late salvaging by Alex Carey, including 11 from Ben Stokes’ final over of the innings and a boundary from the final ball, inched the total up to 285. A defendable total is all Australia’s bowlers have asked for this tournament, and there was a small but discernible nod from Ricky Ponting on the Lord’s balcony as Carey and Starc jogged off for the change of innings. If some surprise greeted the sight of Behrendorff limbering up to deliver the first ball of the England reply, there was slack-jawed shock in the Members Pavilion when his second ball curled fiendishly late to knock back the middle stump of an overcommitted James Vince. Behrendorff mixed swing and angle with skill and experience of his methods to provide an ideal counterpoint to Starc, who at the other end accounted for Root and then Morgan in the manner of his 2015 World Cup pomp.Root was pinned on the crease and in front of all three stumps by a ball that swung back just enough at pace, before Finch moved long leg finer and Starc delivered with a fast bouncer that Morgan could only sky off top edge and glove to Cummins, who made good ground to the catch. Having already retreated outside leg stump to try to drive Starc, Morgan’s brief innings will remain in the Australian memory bank.An attempt at recovery by Jonny Bairstow, speckled with some attractive strokes, was ended when he hooked unwisely at Behrendorff and was also held by Cummins, this time on the midwicket fence. A better outfield catch was to follow when Jos Buttler, just getting himself going, swivel-pulled Stoinis towards square leg and Khawaja did not break stride in taking a catch he might have struggled to reach before admirable fitness and fielding work in the year since Justin Langer became head coach.Even then, with Buttler out of the picture, Stokes harboured some hope of delivering England to victory, for he had shrugged off a calf ailment to climb to his highest score in a Lord’s ODI, and by helping England to 22 in two Cummins overs seemed set for a thrilling finish. This, however, was to reckon without Starc, called back by Finch for the late-innings clean-up job. He certainly did a job on Stokes, conjuring a 145kph yorker that screeched under the set allrounder’s bat to send the bails zinging and more or less end the match. Stokes, for his part, dropped his bat and kicked it away in exasperation. The rest of the game passed as if according to script. Behrendorff was able to complete a five-for at Lord’s, finding a beauty to leave Moeen then aided by the most composed boundary-line double-act catch from Maxwell to Finch. Starc, fittingly, took the last wicket, leaving Australia atop the Cup table and safely into the semi-finals. England, having waited so long for this day, must now play some of the best cricket of their lives to make the finals, let alone win them.

The Manchester City forward was one of seven players cut from Gareth Southgate’s final selection for European Championship duty. Grealish has added another Premier League title to his collection at the Etihad Stadium, but struggled for form throughout the 2023-24 campaign.

Grealish is now being freed to spend his summer holidays somewhere other than Germany, with the 28-year-old expected to make the most of an opportunity to let his hair down. He has become famous for lavish celebrations on the back of trophy wins at City.

DID YOU KNOW?

Grealish is no stranger to Ibiza, or club boss Wayne Lineker – the brother of ex-England striker Gary – and they could join forces on the White Isle. One social media account has gone full Fabrizio Romano mode and posted: "BREAKING NEWS. Jack Grealish agrees 4-week loan deal to Ocean Beach – HERE WE GO."

Wayne has responded to that post by saying “great news”, while George Lineker – Gary’s son – has replied with a string of laughing emojis. While a break will undoubtedly form part of Grealish’s plans during the off-season, he will want to prove a few people wrong when the 2024-25 campaign gets underway in August.

Journalist shares definitive message on Jaidon Anthony’s Leeds future

On Friday, it was confirmed that Bournemouth had agreed to sign Luis Sinisterra permanently from Leeds United, having initially acquired the Colombian on loan. It's been reported that the Cherries will pay Leeds around £20m for the signing, ensuring that Daniel Farke's side haven't made a loss.

When Sinisterra moved to the Vitality Stadium last summer, Jaidon Anthony went the other way in another temporary switch. Now that the former is committed to Bournemouth, Leeds fans may naturally have been wondering about what it means for the latter.

Anthony won't be joining Leeds despite Sinisterra transfer

Well, Tom Crocker, a journalist for the Bournemouth Echo, has bluntly dashed the hopes of any Leeds fans who thought the move could trigger a permanent deal for Anthony.

He's clarified that Sinisterra's exit will have no impact on the Englishman, whose loan deal doesn't include an option to buy. As it stands, he's due to return to the south coast for pre-season when we come to July.

Permanent move unlikely after January rumours

Anthony has made 24 appearances for Leeds since the effective swap deal, but Farke has only named him in the starting line-up for two league games. The German has much preferred to use him in the capacity of substitute, bringing him on a whopping 19 times, at least three more than anybody else in the squad (as you can see in the table below).

Leeds' FA Cup run has given Anthony a platform to shine, with Farke starting him all three matches so far. He scored in the 1-1 draw at Plymouth at Elland Road, one of the most emotional moments of the season following the loss of his mother, and helped Leeds win the replay 4-1.

"One day" – Leeds United star reveals La Liga dream

The Yorkshire side could lose a key man if they get promoted.

ByBen Browning Feb 9, 2024

However, he's unlikely to be satisfied with being a cup player who only figures deep into the second half of Championship matches, particularly having dropped down from the top-flight. He may not have a satisfactory future at Bournemouth either – he's already had to make way for Sinisterra once – but a loan or a permanent move to a club where he can play a greater role would appear to make the most sense.

Indeed, it's telling that Farke had to confirm that Anthony would see out his loan move when asked at the end of December – such is his lack of game-time that some have wondered whether Bournemouth would look to bring him back early.

The likelihood is that his spell in West Yorkshire will prove to be a brief one regardless, but if he can contribute to a successful Premier League promotion push between now and the end of the season, then it will be remembered fondly by the fanbase nonetheless.

Former SA pacer Rusty Theron named in USA squad

Rusty Theron, who played for Kings XI Punjab, Deccan Chargers and Rajasthan Royals between 2010 and 2015 in the IPL, has been named in a 30-man USA squad traveling to Los Angeles this weekend for a selection camp. Theron, who also represented South Africa in four ODIs and nine T20Is between 2010 and 2012, will be looking to make the USA squad for the next round of 2020 World T20 Qualifiers, in Bermuda this August.Theron had retired from South African first-class cricket in 2015 before moving to Florida where he was pursuing a teaching degree at a local college. He has now qualified to represent USA under the ICC’s three-year residency rule. According to multiple sources, USA Cricket had been aggressively pursuing Theron to join their squad for WCL Division Three in Oman last November but he made himself unavailable due to the tournament clashing with his own wedding.Theron has been a regular fixture at T20 club tournaments around the USA in the last several years, most prominently at the annual US Open T20 Cricket tournament in Florida. It’s the same tournament used by USA’s Ali Khan to gain attention on the T20 franchise radar. Theron appeared there most recently in December for Somerset (New Jersey) Cavaliers where he was team-mates with Andre Russell and helped bowl Cavaliers into the final, where they eventually lost to California Bears. Also in the USA squad are a pair of English County players with USA passports aiming to force their way into the national team for the first time. Durham’s Cameron Steel and Hampshire’s Ian Holland have both been included in the weekend camp. The 23-year-old Steel, born in California, made a career-best 224 against Leicestershire at age 21 two seasons ago but has struggled to keep his place in the Durham first XI this season. The 28-year-old Wisconsin-born, Australian-raised Holland similarly has struggled to keep a place in the Hampshire first XI – he was loaned to Northants for the Royal London One-Day Cup – since relocating to England after a solitary first-class appearance for Victoria in 2016.Another big name to emerge from the list for different reasons is allrounder Timroy Allen, one of USA’s biggest match-winners of the last decade. Allen was a key role player for Jamaica Tallawahs in 2016, playing six matches during their run to the CPL title, but has not played for USA since May 2017 due to work commitments.Vikash Mohan, former captain of Combined Campuses & Colleges, has also been included in the 30-man list. The US passport holder from Trinidad & Tobago took part in a USA fitness camp at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs and was also part of a USA selection camp held in Antigua in February ahead of WCL Division Two in Namibia but was not selected for that tour.Five other uncapped players are in the 30-man list besides Theron, Holland, Steel and Mohan. The most prominent of the bunch is Akshay Homraj, a former Guyana Under-19 wicketkeeper-batsman who has since migrated to New York and been part of multiple USA squad camps. The others are Dallas batsman Ali Samad, Chicago area wicketkeeper Shaheer Hassan, Los Angeles fast bowler Sahaj Patel and Los Angeles left-arm spinning allrounder Srinivas Raghavan.Players will participate in six T20 intra-squad trial matches during the camp before a squad is expected to be announced next month ahead of the ICC Americas Regional T20 Qualifier Final in Bermuda to be held from August 18-25. USA will take on Bermuda, Canada and Cayman Islands in a double-round robin event with the top two teams advancing to the Global T20 World Cup Qualifier in the UAE in October.USA squad: Timroy Allen, Usman Ashraf, Karima Gore, Shaheer Hassan, Ian Holland, Akshay Homraj, Elmore Hutchinson, Aaron Jones, Nosthush Kenjige, Ali Khan, Jaskaran Malhotra, Xavier Marshall, Vikash Mohan, Saurabh Netravalkar, Monank Patel, Nisarg Patel, Sagar Patel, Sahaj Patel, Timil Patel, Kyle Phillip, Srinivas Raghavan, Srini Salver, Ali Samad, Roy Silva, Jessy Singh, Cameron Steel, Abdullah Syed, Steven Taylor, Rusty Theron, Hayden Walsh Jr.

Sky Sports: Club make move to sign Celtic gem Rocco Vata on permanent deal

Celtic are stepping up their January transfer activity and have been met with a proposal that could result in a young star departing the club this month, according to a report.

Celtic's January business…

Patience is the key word for Celtic in this window and at the time of writing, they are yet to formally announce any arrivals; however, Rapid Vienna winger Nicolas Kuhn is on the verge of joining the club after completing a medical, according to local Austrian media.

The 24-year-old will arrive for a fee of €3.5 million plus bonuses and Hoops supporters will be excited to see him in action once his deal is concluded, given that he featured for the likes of Bayern Munich, Ajax and RB Leipzig at youth level before permanently moving to Rapid in 2022.

Beyond that, Football Scotland journalist Mark Hendry claimed last week that a left-back and an addition in the forward areas are set to be next on the cards at Parkhead, as he stated on social media platform X:

Estoril defender Tiago Araujo could be the man to offer Greg Taylor some genuine competition for his place on the left-hand side of Brendan Rodgers' backline and reports have suggested that the Hoops are preparing an offer to sign the 22-year-old.

Bologna striker Sydney van Hooijdonk and Brondby's Mathias Kvistgaarden have been linked incessantly to the Scottish Premiership champions over the last few weeks, though there is no concrete indication whether they will end up at Celtic by the end of the month.

Now, new information has emerged claiming that the Hoops could now have a chance to offload one player with interest in his services from elsewhere.

Celtic receive Rocco Vata approach…

According to Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph, Celtic have received an approach from Serie B side Como for Republic of Ireland Under-21 international Rocco Vata, who is also being pursued by Bologna. He explained the permutations of his situation below, stating:

Vata is out of contract this summer and would be available to leave for a small compensation fee, which could reach around €400,000, as cited by The National.

Labelled "exciting" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, the 18-year-old has made just four senior appearances in his time at Parkhead despite starring in their B Team set-up.

Despite clearly being a talented player, Vata's future at Celtic now looks to be increasingly in doubt and he could well seek a new challenge in Italy if negotiations prove to be fruitful, making this one to watch.
