Martin must tweak formation and unleash "brilliant" Southampton star

Russell Martin will want his Southampton side to put in a similarly impressive display to the one they mustered up at Leeds United on the final day away at West Bromwich Albion, as the drama of the Championship playoffs gets finally underway.

The Saints boss would set up his promotion-chasing side in a 5-3-2 formation for the trip to West Yorkshire, his team deciding to err on the side of caution after three league defeats on the spin which paid off in a 2-1 win.

Martin will ponder whether to stick with this defence-first approach or go more gung-ho with an attacking look in the West Midlands, with Carlos Corberan's men rather formidable on their own patch.

Away from talk of formations, there will be some selection headaches with what personnel he picks for the high-stakes first leg still with one notable star coming off injured against Daniel Farke's men.

Southampton team news

Away from long-term casualties Gavin Bazunu and Stuart Armstrong being certainties to miss this first leg and beyond in the playoffs, the pressing concern from a Saints perspective will be the availability of Che Adams to face West Brom.

With Martin downplaying the severity of Adams' knock after the Leeds clash, stating to the Daily Echo after the game that the ex-Birmingham City striker 'will be alright' for the contest at the Hawthorns, it will be intriguing to see if he is risked even if he's not at 100%.

Southampton striker Che Adams.

If he is deemed unfit to be played from the get-go, this could make Martin tweak the formation and revert back to a more trusted 4-3-3 look away from the one-off five-at-the-back approach – the Saints boss utilising the 4-3-3 set-up in his side's last 13 league encounters, before facing off against Leeds.

With both Ross Stewart and Sekou Mara risky options to start as the main man up top alongside Adam Armstrong, the former Newcastle United man could line up as the leading centre-forward alongside Magpies loanee Ryan Fraser who will want to see out his stint at St. Mary's in style.

The pair have linked up well together in the league previously, as seen in the above clip, and will want to wreak havoc against Corberan's Baggies as an electric attacking duo.

Ryan Fraser's numbers this season for Southampton

Described as being a "brilliant" asset to have around the group by Martin earlier in the season, Fraser has been a reliable source of goals and assists for the promotion-chasers even when not being viewed as the main star.

The 30-year-old has eight goals and three assists next to his name from a total of 41 appearances, with his last strike for the Saints funnily enough coming against their play-off semi-final opponents back in February.

Fraser's showing in Southampton's 1-0 loss to Stoke City before the confidence-boosting Leeds win was also bright on an otherwise dire afternoon, with the Scotsman lively in flashes.

Notching up three key passes in the narrow defeat, which saw two big chances be created, the Newcastle loanee also fired one of Southampton's three on-targets on the day at the Potters goal.

Martin will want an even more impactful performance from his winger against West Brom if selected, knowing a win away at a tough hunting ground in the Hawthorns would set up the Saints for a more comfortable home tie to follow.

Rain and Warwickshire tail conspire to thwart Somerset

Somerset endured the sort of sporting agony that only cricket can supply as rain prevented them closing out victory over Warwickshire in the Bob Willis Trophy at Edgbaston. After totally dominating the match, Tom Abell’s side entered the last day needing only to polish off the home side’s second innings. Needing 292 to avoid an innings defeat, Warwickshire, resumed on the final day on 104 for 6. They finished it on 140 for 8 to secure a highly unlikely draw.Somerset bossed the match from ball one. In football terms, they were 10-0 up with ten minutes to play. But this is cricket and, in the bizarre old world of cricket, rain can be the opposition’s star player – and the visitors could only watch in dismay from their dressing room at the Birmingham End as a string of heavy showers swept to Warwickshire’s rescue.Only 15.4 overs were possible in the day. Perhaps most infuriatingly for Somerset, the entire post-tea session, in which there was scope for 37 overs was washed out before the call-off finally arrived at 5.13pm.The groundstaff battled manfully to shift standing water from the outfield and get the ground playable, but it was not to be. For Somerset, the angst stretched beyond simply being denied the victory they deserved. With only two Bob Willis Trophy final places up for grabs, one of the three group-winners will miss out, so the victory points that disappeared down the Birmingham drains could cost them a place in the Lord’s.Warwickshire began the final day in need of either some remarkable batting or some serious rain. It was the latter that bailed them out, though some credit must go to seventh-wicket pair Alex Thomson and Henry Brookes who dug in during a bitty morning’s play to consume some time. The morning brought three sessions of play in which the home side scored 11 without loss in four overs, one without loss in 0.4 overs and 22 for 1 in 9.2 overs. The latter burst brought Somerset’s only success of the morning when Brookes, having impressively reined in his attacking instincts, tried to leave a ball from Lewis Gregory but deflected it on to his stumps.Much to Brookes’ frustration, before another ball could be bowled, the rain returned to expedite an early lunch, at which Warwickshire were 138 for 7. Further heavy showers kept Somerset waiting until 3pm for a resumption but by 3.02pm they had made another breakthrough. Craig Overton’s third ball rose off a length and Thomson edged to wicketkeeper Steven Davies.Somerset sensed the kill but again were sent from the field by rain before they could deliver it. They might have noted with a degree of irony that the 20-minute tea interval passed largely in sunshine. Then the ground was hit by another heavy shower – and another – and Somerset were cruelly thwarted once and for all.

Pakistan lean towards twin spinners as Misbah-ul-Haq targets dry conditions

Shadab Khan in line for recall as visitors seek to build on successes in 2016 and 2018 tours

Umar Farooq03-Aug-2020Misbah ul Haq believes that the dry conditions on offer at Emirates Old Trafford could persuade Pakistan to go into this week’s first Test against England with a twin-spin attack, alongside a trio of fast bowlers who are all adept at bowling reverse swing.Speaking in the build-up to Wednesday’s series opener, Pakistan’s coach rued the fact that the bio-secure arrangements for the series meant that none of the three Tests would be played at his side’s favourite venues of Lord’s and The Oval – where they have won each of their three Tests since 2016. However, he reckoned that the week’s hot and dry forecast would play into his team’s hands.”If you want to win a game against a good team then there are challenges always in your way,” Misbah said. “It’s not like you go out and win it with ease. When you are playing in other’s conditions, you have to beat them in all departments to win a match.”Obviously our favourite hunting grounds are in London – Lord’s and The Oval – but recently at Southampton and Old Trafford, the pitches are showing help for spinners. There is some dryness, like you get when it turns at The Oval, and later on there is the chance for some reverse swing.”Pakistan struggled in their most recent visit to Old Trafford, on the 2016 tour, claiming just nine wickets in a 330-run loss with their legspinner Yasir Shah proving especially ineffective. Having claimed 10 wickets in the first-Test win at Lord’s, he returned match figures of 1 for 266 in 63 overs.Misbah, however, was encouraged by the evidence of the recent West Indies Tests, in which Roston Chase and Dom Bess found assistance at various stages of both games, and in which Rakheem Cornwall played as a second spinner in the series decider, in spite of the damp conditions that dominated for the week.”The scenario is different now,” Misbah said. “For spinners there was absolutely nothing in 2016, but now when we see matches they are totally different and it looks like it’s in our favour and we are going to play our chances.Shadab Khan celebrates•Sportsfile/Getty Images

“Our bowlers are in good form and there are encouraging signs but it depends how we play those conditions and how we play the game, and exploit them in our favour.”Pakistan’s victories in the first two Tests in 2016 and 2018 were part of a wider pattern from England, who have now lost the first Test of a series in eight of their last ten outings. However, coming so soon after the completion of the West Indies series, Misbah acknowledged that their opponents would likely be very well prepared this time around.”That was their first Test in a long, long time and obviously after that they played consistently,” he said of England’s four-wicket defeat at the Ageas Bowl last month. They’ve played three Test matches now.”That [losing habit] might be due to a Test match after a long time, we’re aware of that and that this time it might not happen, so we should be ready for an England team that have already had three matches of experience and they won their last two Test matches.”We have to really come in this Test series right from the word go at our best if we want to win a Test series or a Test match here. We are aware that England have a slight advantage, but if we are alert and go 100% in the first Test match, that is the only way we can beat England otherwise we will find ourselves in difficulty.”ALSO READ: Tactics – Surviving Broad and Anderson, striking with spin and left-arm seamPakistan’s extended 29-man squad has been in the UK since June 28, and Misbah said that he was satisfied with both their acclimatisation and their match preparation, having played a series of warm-up games during their month-long conditioning camps at Derby and Worcester.Sohail Khan claimed two five-wicket hauls in those matches, including their one first-class fixture, and in so doing overshadowed the experienced Mohammad Abbas, who picked up five wickets in two outings but is still expected to lead the attack in the Tests. The broader debate centres on the No. 6 and 7 spots where Pakistan are likely to play Mohammad Rizwan and Shadab Khan, whose solid batting will length the tail while also providing a second legspin option. Khan has played just one Test since the 2018 tour, on which he made three consecutive half-centuries against Ireland at Malahide and against England at Lord’s and Headingley, but he appears to have snuck ahead of Fawad Alam in the pecking order. However, Misbah said that while the practice matches had been useful for getting the players match-fit, he and his fellow selectors would not be focussing too heavily on the actual stats from those games.”Obviously these performances and current form are very important, but at the same time wickets aren’t the only thing that decides what and how anyone is bowling,” Misbah said. “[Khan] is bowling good, but there are a lot of factors involved in deciding what team combination is effective in whatever condition.Going forward, the pitches are going to get drier and with no grass on them. So we will evaluate everything to make a final decision accordingly.”Pakistan’s last Test was against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi in February, and Misbah admitted there would be a few nerves when the players get back to competitive cricket after such a long break. However, he was confident that his players were motivated and in good health after a month in their bio-secure bubble.”Everybody is good, the mental health, they look good and they are enjoying as a team,” he said. “But Test cricket is different. Once you are in, pressures just build sometimes, but we’ll try to keep it so they ae mentally fresh regardless of the results. As the management and coaches, we’ll try to give them that space and keep them motivated until the series is over.”

Glenn Phillips' unbeaten 79 leads Jamaica Tallawahs to comfortable win

St Kitts and Nevis Patriots stay rooted to bottom after limp batting effort

The Report by Matt Roller29-Aug-2020Jamaica Tallawahs secured their third win of the CPL and moved ahead of the pack into third place thanks to Glenn Phillips’ 79 not out and a polished bowling performance on a slow surface at Queen’s Park Oval.Rovman Powell opted to bat first, anticipating that the pitch would get slower as the game went on, and was vindicated by a 37-run win as his side defended 147 with complete ease. They had struggled to score in the first ten overs, inching to 53 for 1 at the halfway stage, but after spending 16 overs grinding between first and second gear, Phillips suddenly slipped into sixth and floored the gas on his way to his highest CPL score since the equivalent fixture last season.Patriots’ run chase never get going after Fidel Edwards cleaned up Chris Lynn in his first over, with Edwards, Veerasammy Permaul and Sandeep Lamichhane finishing with two wickets and Carlos Brathwaite grabbing three.Fabulous PhillipsPhillips struggled badly early in the Tallawahs’ innings, making 14 off the first 23 balls he faced before eventually hitting his first boundary at the end of the 11th over. He had little of the strike after a sedate Powerplay, camping on the back foot against the spinners throughout and scraping his way to 38 off 44 balls with 21 balls left in the innings. The nadir came in the 14th, when he played out a maiden against legspinner Imran Khan after Nick Kelly had shelled a sitter off the last ball of the previous over. But he managed to launch a late-innings explosion against the Patriots’ wayward death-bowling pair, Sheldon Cottrell and Rayad Emrit. First, he whacked Cottrell for three sixes in as many balls, all three of them in the ‘V’ down the ground. Emrit was the victim for his last two sixes, both over long-on, and was then heaved through midwicket for four even as Phillips collapsed with cramp. He eventually ended unbeaten on 79 off 61 balls, scoring more runs from his final 17 balls (41) than his first 44 (38). It was the first time he had ended not out in his CPL career, and he revealed afterwards that he had been desperate to take the innings deep after failing to take Tallawahs over the line at any stage in the tournament to date.Patriots’ post-Powerplay problemsESPNcricinfo’s predictor gave the Patriots a 73.4% chance of winning after they had reached 39 for 1 after six overs of the chase, but they fell away in dramatic style in the following five overs. Chadwick Walton, standing in for Phillips for the first half of the chase after his cramp while batting, took a great catch off Permaul to dismiss Denesh Ramdin, before Ben Dunk chopped on to begin a wicket maiden for Brathwaite.Kieran Powell was left stranded as he skipped down the wicket against Permaul at the start of the 10th over, Walton taking four or five seconds to dislodge the bails as he cruelly taunted the batsman, and Brathwaite’s legcutter accounted for Emrit in the 11th. That meant they had lost four wickets for 14 runs in five overs after the fielding restrictions were lifted – before Lamichhane had bowled a single ball.Lewis in limboBoth teams had injury problems to cope with. Andre Russell missed a second game in a row due to his knee flare-up which will have Kolkata Knight Riders sweating, and had Phillips’ cramp to contend with too.Dunk went off the field in the second over for the Patriots with a thumb injury, though was soon back on and was fit to bat, but Evin Lewis hobbled off after the end of the innings nursing his groin. He had opened in 140 out of his 149 career T20 innings, but found himself sliding down to No. 7 today due to his tweak. He signalled early on that he had few intentions of knocking the runs off in ones and twos, whacking a Lamichhane googly for a towering six over wide long-on and then slapping Edwards for another huge blow down the ground. But he fell to Lamichhane in the 16th over trying to repeat the trick, and took any lingering hopes the Patriots had with him.

Crystal Palace could sign "special" Olise & Eze parner for £21m

Crystal Palace ended the Premier League season like a house on fire this year, and while plenty of fans probably welcomed the conclusion of the long and tiring campaign, the Selhurst Park faithful must be eager to see their side play again.

New boss Oliver Glasner has completely rejuvenated a team that looked stagnant under Roy Hodgson and turned them into one of the most exciting sides in the country, one capable of smashing Manchester United 4-0 and Aston Villa 5-0 at home.

Crystal Palace star Michael Olise.

The Austrian deserves plenty of credit, but he has been helped by having some genuinely excellent players in his team, like Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise, and based on recent reports, the club could soon sign him another exciting attacking talent.

Crystal Palace transfer news

According to a recent report from Spain, Crystal Palace are among several clubs interested in Arsenal's talented academy product Emile Smith Rowe.

Emile Smith Rowe playing for Arsenal

The story has revealed that, alongside the Eagles, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Everton and Aston Villa are also keen on the Englishman and that he could be available for as little as €25m, which converts to about £21m.

It might prove challenging to compete with Villa for the midfielder's signature, but given Palace's location near his place of birth, Croydon, ability to offer more playing time and an excellent manager, there is every chance they could come out on top.

Arsenal midfielder Emile Smith-Rowe.

If Steve Parish and Co can get this deal over the line, then they should, as handing Glasner a player as talented as Smith Rowe for his first transfer at the club would show a sign of intent that can only help bring the club forward.

How Smith Rowe would fit into the Palace team

Now, with the way Glasner has his side playing and the talented players he already has at his disposal, some might question where Smith Rowe would fit into Palace, but there lies one of the 23-year-old's biggest strengths: his versatility.

In his 115 appearances for the Arsenal first team, the Hale End graduate has started as an attacking midfielder, left-sided midfielder, central midfielder, right-sided midfielder, left-winger and even a centre-forward.

So, if the Eagles maintain their 3-4-2-1 formation going into next season, the Croydon-born ace could comfortably step into the middle of the park alongside Adam Wharton to allow Eze and Olise to keep their place as the two central attacking midfielders.

However, if the manager opts to use a more traditional formation incorporating wingers, the Arsenal star could start wide or in attacking midfield, depending on where his teammates are starting.

Moreover, while the "special talent", as described by Jamie Carragher, has struggled for game time in North London over the last couple of years, his output and form when given a real run of games was seriously impressive.

For example, in the 2020/21 season, he returned four goals and seven assists in 33 games before doing even better the following year, returning 11 goals and two assists in 37 games.

Ultimately, while his name might not conjure the same level of excitement that it did a few years ago, Smith Rowe is still a relatively young and tremendously talented player who, alongside Olise and Eze – the contributors of 33 goals and assists this season – could help Glasner's Palace reach another level next season.

Busio scores for VeneziaUSMNT midfielder's first goal of seasonLeads way in 2-0 winGettyWHAT HAPPENED?

USMNT midfielder Gianluca Busio's first goal of the season came in the 63rd minute, and it seemed even he was willing to admit that it required a bit of luck.

Busio's attempted cross weaved through the box and found the back of the net, ultimately giving Venezia the game-winning goal they'd need. They would add another for good measure, as Joel Pojanpalo, who missed a penalty earlier in the match, atoned with an 85th-minute finish to earn a 2-0 win over Genoa.

The victory is Venezia's first of the Serie A season as they continue their first campaign back in the top flight after earning promotion from Serie B last season.

Busio has been with Venezia since 2021 and was a key piece in their promotion run last season. Alongside fellow American Tanner Tessmann, who made a move to Lyon this summer, Busio anchored the Venezia midfield while scoring seven goals in Serie B during the 2023-24 campaign.

Internationally, Busio has earned 12 USMNT caps and has scored one goal: the fifth of six finishes in a 6-0 win over Trinidad & Tobago at the 2023 Gold Cup. The 22-year-old midfielder was also a part of the U.S. U-23 squad at the Olympics this past summer.

DID YOU KNOW?

The goal put an exclamation point on what was already a memorable day for Busio. Before the game, the American was recognized for making his 100th appearance since joining Venezia from Sporting KC.
