Fabrizio Romano: Aston Villa have reached "agreement" for £30k-a-week ace

Aston Villa have reached an agreement to sign a £30,000-a-week player in the summer transfer window, according to an exciting update by journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Aston Villa transfer news

The Villans enjoyed one of their best-ever seasons in the Premier League in 2023/24, finishing fourth in the table and qualifying for the Champions League in the process. The idea of Unai Emery's side coming up against some of Europe's best sides next term is a mouthwatering prospect for the supporters, but further signings will be needed, in order to compete at that level.

Former Arsernal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi has emerged as a possible target for Villa this summer, with the Frenchman currently plying his trade at Lazio. He has reportedly fallen out with manager Igor Tudor, with Emery looking to pounce and bring in a player who he managed during his time in charge of the Gunners.

Matteo Guendouzi at Lazio

Juventus attacker Matias Soule has also been linked with a switch to Villa Park in the coming months, having spent this season on loan at Frosinone, scoring 11 goals in 36 appearances in Serie A. He is considered a strong rival to Leon Bailey out wide, while a more ambitious target in that area is thought to be Barcelona's Raphinha, who of course made his name in England with Leeds United.

Emile Smith Rowe could feel that he needs a move in the summer, having struggled for playing time at Arsenal because of the form of the likes of Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard and Kai Havertz at the Emirates. Villa could reportedly offer the Englishman a way out, having impressed Emery in the past.

Aston Villa reach "agreement" over midfielder signing

Taking to X on Monday, Romano claimed that Aston Villa have an "agreement" in place to sign Ross Barkley from Luton Town when the summer transfer window opens on July 1st, bringing him back for a second stint at the club.

"Aston Villa have reached verbal agreement with Luton Town to sign Ross Barkley. Understand fee will be around £5m. Final part needed, medical tests and player’s formal signature — agreement on player side expected at the beginning of July. Here we go, soon."

Ross Barkley for Luton Town

Not many Villa fans would have expected the club to re-sign Barkley when he departed from his loan spell at the end of the 2020/21 season, but his form in a Luton shirt means that he could be a superb addition ahead of next season.

The 30-year-old was a standout player for the Hatters in their maiden year in the Premier League, shining in a slightly deeper playmaking role in midfield, scoring five goals and registering four assists. The £30,000-a-week former Everton man also received praise from Cesc Fabregas:

"He's playing at a fantastic level. I'm very happy for him because he lost his way a little bit, he lost his confidence and now he's back at it, You always need a player like this when you are in a team for example that didn’t have the confidence that they wanted."

Aston Villa's most expensive signings of all time

At 30, Barkley isn't a young player anymore, and there is a slight risk that he won't have the same impact being a smaller fish in a bigger pond – that appeared to happen at Chelsea, for example – but he does seem to have matured as a footballer, and would add real depth for Villa in the middle of the park.

England player ratings vs Greece: Phil Foden goes missing again! Disappointing Three Lions beaten despite Jude Bellingham heroics while Jordan Pickford struggles in goal

Lee Carsley's hopes of landing the England job on a permanent basis took a blow after a terrible showing at Wembley in the Nations League

England kicked off their October international fixtures with a dreadful 2-1 loss at home to Greece in the Nations League.

The Three Lions were second-best for much of the evening and were deserved losers on Thursday night.

Lee Carsley's decision to start an ultra-attacking lineup backfired and there will be questions over his credentials for the managerial role on a full-time basis.

England were punished for not taking the game to Greece when they fell behind just after the break. Star striker Vangelis Pavlidis tiptoed away from Cole Palmer, Trent Alexander-Arnold and John Stones before firing past Pickford from close range.

Lee Carsley's men continued to look vulnerable on the counter and again had a late offside flag to thank after Greece again had the ball in the net, while Ollie Watkins' first touch after coming on saw him clip the crossbar.

Twice more were Greece denied a second goal by offside calls before Jude Bellingham dragged England level in the dying embers with a super strike from the edge of the box.

But deep into stoppage time, Pavlidis scrambled in his second goal of the evening to snatch back all three points for Greece.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Jordan Pickford (4/10):

Set the tone for the evening with some haphazard antics in the opening exchanges of the game. A little unclear if his long-range kicking helped England or if he was just showing off.

    Trent Alexander-Arnold (5/10):

Came up with a couple of teasing crosses but without any luck in finding an assist. Greece continually sought to counter into the space he vacated when bombing forward and into midfield.

    John Stones (5/10):

Named as captain for the night in the absence of the injured Harry Kane but didn't carry the required seniority to play that part well enough. Eased off Pavlidis leading to Greece's deadlock-breaker.

    Levi Colwill (6/10):

Made an outstanding recovery clearance to deny Greece in the first half, while he also wasn't afraid to switch play and go long when necessary.

    Rico Lewis (6/10):

Never shrank under the Wembley spotlight and was eager to play with the ball at his feet, despite his Greek counterparts continually finding ways to knock him out of stride due to his smaller stature.

    Midfield

    Bukayo Saka (5/10):

Booked for a cynical trip late in the first half and limped off with an injury at the start of the second. Found his pathways into the box blocked off by blue shirts more often than not.

    Cole Palmer (6/10):

Spurned a fantastic opening to give England the lead in the first half and that came back to haunt the hosts. Worked hard but doesn't suit playing in a deeper midfield role, even if his looped passing opened Greece up on occasion.

    Declan Rice (6/10):

Had to do of water-carrying due to the attacking riches in from the start. Like Arsenal team-mate Saka was also shown a yellow card for a late foul.

    Anthony Gordon (6/10):

Always positioned himself off the shoulder of the last man ready to burst in behind. Combined well with Bellingham in the left channel. Came off for Watkins with England in need of a goal.

  • AFP

    Attack

    Phil Foden (4/10):

New position, new role, new manager, but Foden remains the odd-man-out in England's attack. Perhaps still lacking in match sharpness having only recently returned to full fitness. Hauled off for Solanke.

    Jude Bellingham (6/10):

England's most advanced forward from the start, though did drop deeper to link play and win possession back. This, however, meant he posed little threat in the 18-yard box. Dropped back deeper after Watkins and Solanke's introductions, allowing him to arrive in the right place to equalise.

    Subs & Manager

    Noni Madueke (5/10):

Replaced Saka immediately after Greece's opening goal.

    Ollie Watkins (6/10):

Came on in place of Gordon and hit the bar with his first opportunity.

    Dominic Solanke (6/10):

Made his first England appearance in seven years when he was brought on for Foden. It was his scuffed shot that led to Bellingham firing England level.

    Lee Carsley (4/10):

England fans have long craved for attacking lineups and some seeming semblance of ambition, but this experiment was a failure and showed why balance is key to international football.

Talks open: Crystal Palace ready bid to sign £100k-p/w Premier League ace

Crystal Palace are now ready to make a bid for a Premier League attacker after sealing their first signing of the summer.

Chadi Riad signs for Crystal Palace

It could turn out to be a relatively busy summer at Selhurst Park in the transfer market ahead of Oliver Glasner’s first full season in charge.

Steve Parish, Dougie Freedman and co have already secured the Eagles’ first addition of the window, with defender Chadi Riad joining from Real Betis.

Speaking after completing his move last week, the Morocco international said: “I’m really happy to join Crystal Palace. I was interested in coming here because of the history of the club, and the league in which it plays. They have been telling me how they played this year and I think it complements perfectly the way I play.

“The club has high-level players who are young and I have come here to follow their same trajectory, to grow as they have grown.”

Someone who Riad may not get the chance to play with at Palace is Michael Olise. There has been plenty of speculation regarding Olise and a move away this summer, while there have also been rumours of Eberechi Eze departing.

Should one, or both of Olise and Eze leave the club, then Palace will need creative attacking reinforcements, and it looks as if they are planning their move for one specific target.

Crystal Palace ready Reiss Nelson bid

According to CaughtOffside, Crystal Palace are ready to make an opening bid for Arsenal’s Reiss Nelson in the region of €10m (£8.45m). The Gunners want €25m (£21.1m) for the 24-year-old, with the Eagles even beginning talks to secure a move.

Arsenal forward Reiss Nelson.

Crystal Palace aren’t alone, though, with Fulham and West Ham United also named as suitors for Nelson, who is now no longer in Mikel Arteta’s first-team plans at the Emirates.

Nelson, on £100,000-a-week in north London, has struggled for game time, contributing to four goals in 747 minutes of game time during the 2023/24 season.

He did receive praise from Arteta last year, though, with the Spaniard calling the winger “important” after his winner against Bournemouth. “I always saw the potential,” Arteta said of Nelson.

“The talent and the desire for him to do it, but he’s at a different level right now. I think emotionally, the experiences that he had helped him. Football-wise, it was my decision in the last two games not to play him because we had other options. But he was knocking on the door, he’s been training really good and it’s a good lesson for me and for the coaches that we need him and that he can be really important for the team.”

Nelson has made 89 senior appearances for the Gunners in total, scoring eight times and registering nine assists, and by the look of it, a move across London to Palace, Fulham or West Ham is one to watch this summer.

Carsley received a lot of criticism for his tactics as England went down 2-1 against Greece in their Nations League clash earlier this week. After guiding the Three Lions to back-to-back wins in his first two games in charge of the senior side, Carsley suffered his first loss on Thursday.

However, the interim manager justified his decision as he claimed he wanted to try a different approach, and that the nation must change their views on football if England are to win a major tournament.

WHAT LEE CARSLEY SAID

Speaking to reporters, the 50-year-old said of his reign, "I could see it being quite easy just to go with the same squad and the same players and almost, not doing the same thing, but not trying as many things. Your human instinct is to be safe, to go with things that you’re comfortable with, but it was important that in this period I felt that I have to be out of my comfort zone.

"I have to try something because we’ve got to put ourselves in a position where we can win and to think that we can just do the same again and expect something different I think is naive. So I totally accept all of the criticism. I’m glad it was directed towards me, not the players, and we move on."

A Madrid statement on Carvajal reads: "Following tests carried out on our player Dani Carvajal by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament, a rupture of the external collateral ligament and a rupture of the popliteus tendon in his right leg. He will undergo surgery in the coming days."

On Vinicius, the club added: "Following tests carried out on Vinicius Junior, the player has been diagnosed with a cervical injury. His progress will be monitored."

Manager Carlo Ancelotti also said after the match: “Vinicius Jr is in pain and will undergo tests in the next hours. His neck is blocked, he has suffered a problem and that’s something we need to check with the medical staff”.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Carvajal has become a mainstay in Madrid's defence for many years now but this setback could rule him out for the rest of the season. The Spanish champions will hope star attacker Vinicius will be back fit as soon as possible as they try to defend their La Liga and Champions League crowns.

KL Rahul, Mohammed Siraj in India Test squad for Australia tour; Rohit Sharma out with injury

Rohit Sharma has not been included in any of the three squads for India’s tour of Australia after he picked a hamstring injury in the ongoing IPL. KL Rahul and Kuldeep Yadav have returned to India’s Test squad and uncapped fast bowler Mohammed Siraj has also been called-up for the four-match series in December-January. Ishant Sharma’s injury in the IPL meant he was not in the Test squad either, and the BCCI has said in a statement they will “continue to monitor the progress of Rohit Sharma and Ishant Sharma.”While Rohit picked up a hamstring injury last week and he is still in the UAE with the Mumbai Indians squad, Ishant was ruled out of the IPL much earlier with an abdominal muscle tear and he had returned to India. Ishant has been at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru since then.Rohit had also missed India’s last Test series, against New Zealand earlier this year, with a calf injury.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

India’s openers in Rohit’s absence are Mayank Agarwal, Prithvi Shaw and Shubman Gill, just like was the case for the New Zealand Tests earlier this year, with the addition of Rahul now to make it an 18-man squad. Siraj will be the fifth pace-bowling option along with Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav and Navdeep Saini whereas Kuldeep will be the third spinner along with Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin. The BCCI release also said four additional bowlers – Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Kartik Tyagi, Ishan Porel and T Natarajan – will travel with the Indian contingent.Rishabh Pant, who is missing from the white-ball squads, and Wriddhiman Saha are the two wicketkeepers, and Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (vice-captain) and Hanuma Vihari are the expected batsmen in the squad led by Virat Kohli.Pujara and Vihari – the two specialist Test batsmen – flew to the UAE recently along with the majority of India’s coaching staff. India’s squads will then fly to Australia directly from the UAE after the IPL final on November 10, with the tour expected to start on November 27 in Sydney with the ODIs, followed by the T20Is and the Tests.Rahul, who last played a Test in the West Indies last year and also toured Australia in 2018-19, has been one of the most consistent batsmen this IPL while opening for the Kings XI Punjab and is currently the leading run-scorer of the season with 595 runs. Siraj has impressed for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, especially with his stunning figures of 3 for 8 against the Kolkata Knight Riders last week. Overall, Siraj has six wickets from 16 overs in five games so far.It is for the longer format, though, that Siraj has been impressing the selectors by regularly representing India A in the last few years. He toured New Zealand with the A squad earlier this year for three wickets from two games, after a tally of 19 wickets in five games in the 2019-20 Ranji Trophy. Prior to that he was part of the A squads for the home series against South Africa A and the tour of West Indies in 2019.It was in late 2018, however, that he turned heads with the red ball when he took career-best figures of 8 for 59 against an Australia A line-up that had several Test batsmen. When he took another three wickets in the second innings, he finished with 40 wickets in five first-class games against the A squads of West Indies, England, South Africa and Australia.Kuldeep’s last Test was in Australia in 2019 in Sydney, where he took a five-for, and he has been more regular in the shorter formats since then, having played an ODI in New Zealand earlier this year and the home series against Australia, Sri Lanka and West Indies before that. The fixtures have not been announced officially yet but the Test series is expected to start with a day-night game in Adelaide from December 17, before moving to Melbourne for the Boxing Day Test starting December 26, followed by the New Year’s Test in Sydney from January 7 and the last one in Brisbane from January 15.India Test squad: Virat Kohli (capt), Mayank Agarwal, Prithvi Shaw, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (vice-captain), Hanuma Vihari, Shubman Gill, Wriddhiman Saha, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Navdeep Saini, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Mohammed Siraj

£17m Bayern target wants to leave as Arsenal take real interest this week

A £17 million player wanted by Bayern Munich is now considering an exit from the Nou Camp this summer, coming as Arsenal take a real interest in signing him this week.

Edu's summer transfer plan at Arsenal

Sporting director Edu Gaspar has been tasked with reinforcing manager Mikel Arteta's squad this summer, and the Brazilian recently admitted that planning has been underway for quite some time as the Gunners target young, hungry and energetic players.

Edu also claimed that Arsenal have already drawn up their transfer target list, in a sit down with TNT Sports all the way back in February.

“Well, I understand what the fans are asking for but we already have our targets,” the transfer chief said.

“We have planned a lot ahead and I will be worried if we don’t score a lot of goals and if we’re not creating chances, which is the opposite because we create a lot and score a lot of goals. The plan is to try to get better every year and I think we are in a good moment. Let's see if we can keep improving.

“I think if you see the type of the players we have at the moment, it’s players which have a big, big commitment of [to] the club, which is very important.

“So the way we transmit to the fans, transmit to people our commitment – sometimes you can lose, you can win games, it’s all part of the sport – helps us perform the best way possible and show the passion we have for the club and try to be win as many games as we can.

“Many times in certain conversations to recruit the players you don't see the character of the player or the character of the player does not fit well with what we are trying to do and then you have to move on and try to find what we’re really looking for. If you see all the signings we’ve made since we started together, everyone is almost the same, young, energetic and passionate, and good talents with big, beautiful futures ahead of them.”

Arsenal want to sign a new defender among their chief transfer priorities, maybe even a centre-back. In terms of the players who could fit this and Edu's criteria, one of them may have been named by Spanish news outlet Mundo Deportivo this week.

Arsenal emerge as strong contenders to sign Mika Faye

In a report on Monday, Mundo wrote that Arsenal have emerged strongly in the race for Barcelona starlet Mika Faye "in recent hours".

The £17 million centre-back, also wanted by Bayern Munich, hasn't made a single appearance for the Barca first team, but has impressed for their B side in the Spanish third tier. Considering his lack of chances for Barca's senior side, the teenage defender now has his mind on leaving this summer, unless they can guarantee him opportunities next term.

Faye made 33 league appearances for the Barca B side last season, even chipping in with four goals, and this is said to have alerted Arsenal chiefs.

As well as Bayern and Arsenal, Man United, Liverpool and Inter Milan are displaying a real fondness for the 19-year-old who's already been capped by his native Senegal.

Tottenham are believed to be the favourites to sign a £20 million player and are considering a bid, coming after talks with his representatives.

Spurs set sights on signing new midfielder this summer

Uncertainty surrounds the futures of both Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Giovani Lo Celso, with the duo widely expected to depart this summer. Reports have suggested in recent months that Spurs are looking to bring in a new midfield number six as a result, and they've been linked with a wide array of interesting targets.

Atalanta star Ederson and Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher are on Tottenham's radar as just two options, and a few others from abroad have been linked as well. Fabrizio Romano has tipped Spurs to bring in an "important" midfielder as one of their priorities this summer.

“I see Tottenham signing an important midfielder in the summer transfer window," said Romano to JD Football earlier this year.

“But a really important one. I think they want to do something special in that position.”

Hojbjerg played the vast majority of games last season at Spurs, but an overwhelming number of his cameos came off the bench. The Denmark international really struggled to cement himself as a sure-fire starter under Ange Postecoglou, and with his contract expiring next year, now could be the time to sell.

The former Southampton star is one of many Spurs players who could leave this summer, as Postecoglou and co plot a serious rebuild. Signing a replacement for Hojbjerg and/or Lo Celso will be imperative, especially considering their participation in the Europa League next season.

Bringing in homegrown players will also hold some bearing. A player who impressed last season, and could tick both these boxes, comes in the form of Sunderland star Jobe Bellingham. Reliable reporter Ed Aarons of The Guardian wrote this week that Tottenham hold a serious interest in Bellingham, who the Black Cats value at around £20 million.

Now, TEAMtalk have shared their own update on the matter.

Tottenham favourites to sign Jobe Bellingham after agent talks

The outlet writes that Tottenham would be favourites to sign Bellingham in the event of a suitable offer, and they're considering just that after making him a key summer transfer target.

They add that the Lilywhites have already been in contact with the 18-year-old's representatives to gauge the conditions of a potential deal. Bellingham was a mainstay for Sunderland last season, bagging seven goals and an assist over 45 Championship appearances, and was called a "freak of nature".

"He's an absolute freak of nature, physically," said teammate Dan Neil.

"I have never seen a 17-year-old that size. Technically, he is a top, top, player as well."

Arsenal keen on £50m Euro 2024 star who’s looked better than Saliba

The transfer window officially opened last week, and at the same time, the European Championships finally got underway.

Teams across the continent will be watching the competition and the market extra carefully over the coming weeks, and based on recent reports, Arsenal have set their sights on a defender who has already caught the media's attention for his showing in the tournament.

In fact, this young ace, a defender, put in a more impressive performance than the Gunners' star defender William Saliba did for France on Monday, and he could be the perfect addition to the North Londoners' backline.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from Caught Offside, Arsenal are one of several teams interested in Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi and are 'ready to test the resolve' of the Eagles for his signature.

Marc Guehi for England

Alongside the Gunners, the report claims that Newcastle United are keen to land the England international this summer and that the South Londoners currently value the 23-year-old at around £50m.

Any deal will take some time to construct due to the centre-back's England commitments over the next month or so, but in good news, the report claims he is 'open to leaving Selhurst Park this summer.'

Given the interest from other sides, it might be a tricky transfer to complete, but Guehi has proven his class in the Premier League and looked brilliant for the Three Lions last week, so it may be a deal worth pursuing.

Guehi's performance compared to Saliba's

Now, we aren't trying to say that Guehi is a better player than Saliba, so put down those pitchforks, but after the first round of group games at the Euros, it would be fair to say that the Englishman had a slightly better tournament debut, even if the Frenchman still looked alright.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

For instance, Get French Football News gave the Arsenal man a 6/10 on the night, acknowledging that while he 'got most things right', there were a few choice decisions, including an over the shoulder volley that 'went straight to an Austria player' and a mistimed tackle late on.

In contrast, Sky Sports gave the Palace ace an 8/10 for his display on Sunday. They described his performance as 'phenomenal', and that he exuded 'calmness in possession' and that 'if he carries on like this, it's a game-changing summer ahead.'

He's not just been impressive for England, though, as the former Chelsea man has more than proven his worth in the Premier League over the last few seasons. He has racked up 98 appearances in the competition for Palace, in which he has scored three goals and provided two assists.

Moreover, the "versatile" ace, as data analyst Ben Mattinson dubbed him for his ability to play as either a right or left-sided centre-back, already has proven leadership qualities, having captained England at U17 and U21 level and captaining Palace at just 21 years old in February 2022.

Ultimately, while Guehi isn't necessarily a better defender than Saliba – few players are – he's undoubtedly a brilliant centre-back, and if the Gunners have a chance of bringing him to the Emirates after the Euros, they should take it.
