Maresca has decided to sell £100k-per-week Chelsea star alongside Chilwell

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has decided to sell a £100,000-per-week player alongside left-back Ben Chilwell, with both men “firmly” out of the Italian’s plans and could depart in the January transfer window.

Chilwell expected to leave Chelsea in January

The biggest name who’s most heavily linked with the Stamford Bridge exit door right now, and has been ever since the summer, is Chilwell.

Maresca axed Chilwell from the squad for a period but recalled the Englishman for their EFL Cup win over Barrow last month – opting to hand him much-needed minutes as the club look to attract suitors mid-season.

“I think so. Hopefully, we can give him some minutes tomorrow,” said Maresca on Chilwell’s return to the first team on September 24.

“The idea for him was to leave. In the moment that he’s here, he’s one of the squad, he’s training. He will be in the squad tomorrow, and hopefully we can give him some minutes.”

Chilwell did get minutes in Chelsea’s victory against Barrow, playing 45 during a dominant 5-0 win at Stamford Bridge, but that did little to sway Maresca in terms of the 27-year-old’s long-term future.

Chilwell has been deemed surplus to requirements by Maresca ahead of January, with widespread reports indicating that the defender’s future is far away from west London.

It is believed that Chilwell was even offered to Man United during the summer window, and the player himself was very keen on a move to Old Trafford. However, Erik ten Hag’s side ultimately didn’t take the bait, despite their need for a new left-back at the time.

It’s been quite a fall from grace for the £200,000-per-week ex-captain, who spent the vast majority of last campaign sidelined with both hamstring and knee problems. Mauricio Pochettino even called Chilwell one of the best left-backs in the world, but Maresca clearly doesn’t share that verdict.

Maresca ready to sell Carney Chukwuemeka alongside Chilwell

According to CaughtOffside, £100,000-per-week midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka is also facing the axe in January.

Carney Chukwuemeka

Maresca has apparently decided to sell Chukwuemeka, with both the England Under-21 international and Chilwell “firmly” out of his plans. Both players are also said to be the “most likely” exits to happen mid-season.

AC Milan and clubs in Saudi Arabia are taking a real interest in signing the 20-year-old, so Chukwuemeka has suitors for the winter period. The Rossoneri in particular are looking for bargain additions to bolster their midfield, and it is believed that Chelsea’s outcast could depart for the San Siro on loan.

Interestingly, ex-Chelsea superstar Marcel Desailly has expressed how he’s a real fan of him.

“I like Carney Chukwuemeka because he is like an artist who comes onto the stage,” said Desailly (via Chelsea News).

“He has got the ball. Now is my moment. Shine. You see the dribbling. He is sure about what he is going to do and he is clinical. I love it.”

A prioridade do momento é Allan, do Atlético-MG.

Mark Wood hoping he and Tymal Mills can 'bring the fire' for England

Extra pace could provide cutting edge in T20 World Cup bid

Mark Wood hopes to prove once again that two 90mph fast bowlers can make the difference in T20 cricket, as he and Tymal Mills prepare to dovetail in England’s World Cup line-up, just as Wood and the injured Jofra Archer have done in previous campaigns.Speaking from Oman, where the England squad have been warming up ahead of next week’s tournament opener against West Indies, Wood admitted that he cannot feel 100% assured of a starting berth, but with Mills back in the reckoning, and in line for his first England appearance since 2017 and only his fifth overall, he was confident that their skills can complement one another.Related

“We’re all competing for places here because there’s only a certain amount of seamers that can play, but I don’t feel like me and ‘T’ are in direct competition,” Wood said. “We’re all part of a squad here that’s trying to win the World Cup, so we’ll all be desperately trying to do that.”Wood, of course, has enjoyed that World Cup-winning feeling once before, claiming 18 wickets at 25.72 in England’s 50-over triumph in 2019. And while Mills, like Archer, has a repertoire of slower balls that mean pace is not the be-all and end-all of his game, Wood recalled how a focus on the speed gun during that tournament helped to propel the two England quicks to greater heights – both he and Archer matched Australia’s Mitchell Starc in bowling the fastest balls of the tournament at 154kph (95.7mph) – and said he hopes to get his juices flowing with Mills as well.”It worked for me and Jofra, so me and T might have to keep it going,” Wood said. “He’s looked sharp in the nets, and to watch him, I certainly wouldn’t want to face him. He’s looking the business at the minute so hopefully he can bring some fire and I’ll have to up my game as well.”Wood is conscious, however, of the need for subtlety as well as speed, especially given the prospect of some less-than-sympathetic tracks for fast bowlers in the UAE. The surfaces at Dubai and Abu Dhabi are likely to be tired ones following the conclusion of the IPL, while Sharjah – the venue for their final two group games, including South Africa on November 6 – is a notoriously tough places for the quicks, with its short boundaries and propensity for excess dew.”[The conditions] put extra pressure on us to deliver, so we’ll have to be up for the challenge,” Wood said. “We do keep an eye on the pitches there, and it’s not just the wickets, it’s the dimensions – the field in Sharjah is quite small, Abu Dhabi is obviously wide. But it’s good that we get a heads-up [through the IPL].”My contribution might not just be in the wickets column,” he added. “If it is a spinner’s track, my role might be to keep it down as much as I can and then the spinners can attack from the other end. The thing you have to do is adapt within the game anyway.”It’s potentially a far cry from the lively surfaces in Ahmedabad on which Wood impressed during England’s 3-2 series loss in India in March – a campaign that had been earmarked as their World Cup sighter until the tournament had to be relocated to the UAE due to Covid. On that occasion, he was habitually unleashed as first-change after Archer, with a licence to attack the Powerplay – most notably with figures of 3 for 31 in an eight-wicket win in the third match at Ahmedabad.”I think my role will be fairly similar,” Wood said. “I’ll be trying to attack and take wickets up-front and hopefully in the middle. We will have to adapt and assess conditions, but I still think, if I do play, that’s how I’ll be used.”In India I did that well but also there was a game that didn’t go well, which I got smacked in,” he added, recalling his figures of 0 for 53 in the fifth and final match, as India sealed the series with a 36-run win. “If you get too far ahead of yourself, it can knock your confidence, so we’ll try to stay as level as we can throughout the competition. We will all have good days and bad days, so it’s just trying to make sure there’s no stone unturned when it comes to the main stuff.”Wood’s opportunities to hone his T20 skills have been few and far between in recent months. Though he bowled with pace against an outclassed Sri Lanka side in two T20Is in June, a bout of Covid during the summer kept him out of action during England’s three-match series against Pakistan in July, while his involvement in England’s Test bubble meant he was unable to feature either for Durham in the Vitality Blast or for London Spirit in the Hundred. As a consequence, there has been a lot of focus on match scenarios in Oman, ahead of the team’s relocation to Dubai on Saturday where they will play warm-up matches against India and New Zealand. “We’ve been practising Super Overs, practising single-ball events,” Wood said. “Batters need six, batters need four, batters need two, batters need one … practising Powerplay overs. It’s been a bit more specific than just nets and fielding.”In the absence of any game-time of his own, Wood said that he had been keeping tabs of the progress of South Africa’s Anrich Nortje, whose raw pace transcended the tough UAE conditions in Delhi Capitals’ advance to the IPL play-offs.”He’s bowled really well, he’s bowled quickly, looking at his role if I can back that up and try to bowl like he has then I’m sure I can have success,” Wood said. There is plenty that remains unclear for England’s World Cup plans – especially since their captain, Eoin Morgan, currently in action with Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL final, won’t be linking up with the squad until their arrival in Dubai. But Wood has full faith in a group that has achieved unprecedented white-ball success for England in recent years, and believes a second piece of global silverware is firmly within their grasp.”We’ve got a huge chance,” he said. “We’ve got a great team. We’ve very similar players from the 50-over team to the Twenty20, and whoever’s come in has got up to speed quickly, has got into the team ethos and values and the positive way we play. It’s a good time now to cement something pretty special.”

Ipswich gem scored a hat-trick on Tractor Boys debut, now he’s in League 1

Ipswich Town fans will be praying that their stay in the Premier League isn’t a short one that unfortunately peters out after just one season in the big time, with the Tractor Boys currently occupying a spot in the league’s relegation zone.

Of course, the fact the Suffolk side are even in the top flight is a mammoth achievement in itself, considering they finished in a dire 11th place in League One during 2021/22, before their unbelievable rise then took shape.

Kieran McKenna was the main instigator from the dug-out that kickstarted Ipswich’s rise all the way up to the top division of English football again, but not everything was bleak when the Tractor Boys were struggling in the EFL prior to his arrival, with many star players fondly remembered by supporters in these lowly leagues.

Ipswich's top performers in the EFL

Daryl Murphy is a name that Ipswich fans will still hold dear to their hearts, even when cheering on Liam Delap in the here and now, with the Republic of Ireland international a deadly goal machine for the Tractor Boys when they once routinely aspired for a play-off spot in the Championship.

Murphy amassed an impressive 67 goals from 225 appearances at Portman Road, with 27 of those strikes coming during the 2014/15 season in the second tier, as the sharpshooter won himself a Golden Boot accolade.

Other potent strikers come to mind in the form of Martyn Waghorn and David McGoldrick, with the latter helping himself to 14 league goals in 2013/14, whilst Waghorn bowed out from his short but sweet stint in Suffolk with a stunning goal return of 16 from 46 overall games.

Whilst these Ipswich stars are etched into the Tractor Boys hall-of-fame as dependable performers from yesteryear – when a return to the Premier League felt like a distant dream – there are other examples where players fizzled out after a promising start to life donning Ipswich blue.

One example will definitely hurt those at Ipswich looking back, with the player in question scoring an unbelievable hat-trick on his debut, only to then have a disrupted time at the club.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

Grant Ward's time at Ipswich

The best place to start with the ex-Tottenham Hotspur youngster is that aforementioned hat-trick, with Grant Ward firing home three strikes as a stunning second-half substitute in August 2016, managing to steer his side to a 4-2 win over Barnsley as a result of his mad 38-minute burst of goals.

Ipswich boss at the time Mick McCarthy would rightfully wax lyrical about Ward after the game, stating that everyone at the second-tier club was “delighted” with how quickly the winger had managed to impress and settle in after a summer move from Spurs.

Ward would only go on to score five more strikes for the Tractor Boys across the next couple of seasons though, with his final campaign in Suffolk largely disrupted by injury setbacks, with a cruciate ligament tear in December 2018 cutting short his action and ultimately would end up being the final nail in the coffin for his Ipswich career.

He has bounced back since this serious injury, with the 29-year-old going on to play for Blackpool directly after leaving Ipswich, whilst the one-time £600k Ipswich buy now finds himself on the books of League One side Bristol Rovers.

The Rovers number eight even scored this sumptuous strike last time out for the Gas in FA Cup action, showing the flickers of quality that once saw him be tipped for great things at Portman Road.

Ward will no doubt see his time at Ipswich now as a part of his career that could have gone differently, with the hat-trick he picked up on his debut actually working against him in the long run, as he couldn’t quite ever live up to this electric start across his up-and-down three-season stay in Suffolk.

Dyche must now hand rare start to Everton’s "Lukaku-esque" star

Six-pointer is a term often used too freely in football, but Everton’s Premier League fixture against West Ham United on Saturday should be billed as such.

For the hosts, a poor performance could spell the end of Julen Lopetegui’s fledgling tenure, if reports are to be believed, with the Spaniard failing to inspire belief or fluency across the opening months of the campaign.

Everton manager Sean Dyche

Everton, conversely, have lost just one of their past six matches, but after starting the term with four top-flight defeats on the trot, there’s just cause for concerns around Sean Dyche’s position, especially with The Friedkin Group moving to acquire Farhad Moshiri’s 94% stake in the club, signalling the start of a new era.

The London Stadium has become a hotbed of trepidation and discontent, and this might be the perfect opportunity for The Toffees to latch onto the malaise and leapfrog the 14th-placed Londoners.

Everton team news

Jarrad Branthwaite has been introduced late on in both of Everton’s recent Premier League fixtures. Having recovered from injury, the touted centre-back could be in line for a mood-raising starting berth.

Having missed last week’s loss against Southampton, key midfield star Abdoulaye Doucoure is set to return, which comes as a big boost.

James Garner (back), Tim Iroegbunam and Youssef Chermiti (both foot) are still out of action, while Dyche has confirmed that Armando Broja, who was signed this summer but has not yet made his Everton debut, is expected to join team training during the imminent international break.

Chelsea striker Armando Broja.

Even without Broja’s availability, Dyche must be thinking about dropping Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has flattered to deceive of late.

Why Dominic Calvert-Lewin should be dropped

Praise for Calvert-Lewin; he’s started ten successive Premier League matches to start the campaign. The last time such a feat was achieved was in 2020/21 before injuries claimed his fluency.

He had scored ten from ten at that stage, with his performances leading talent scout Jacek Kulig to state that “Carlo Ancelotti created a monster”.

Last year was spent getting back on track, but Calvert-Lewin has been poor in recent games and must now be dropped. When comparing the striker’s metrics against his own from last year, it can be seen that Calvert-Lewin has missed a shocking 23 big chances in the Premier League since the start of last season, despite only scoring nine goals in the same timeframe.

Moreover, the 6 foot 3 sensation has been caught offside 16 times in the Premier League this year, five times more than any other player.

His fitness levels have been brilliant this season, unfaltering in his persistence to start and serve as a focal point, but the number nine has not posted a goal contribution since Everton escaped their dismal start to the campaign, and perhaps now should be dropped.

Broja may not be ready, but Everton have the perfect alternative to step into the starting line-up. Beto, indeed, deserves a shot.

Beto could send Lopetegui packing

Beto has lifted his form and then some in recent weeks, scoring the last-gasp equaliser against Fulham two weeks back before rattling the crossbar and scoring a marginally offside goal either side of Adam Armstrong’s winner at St. Mary’s one week ago.

The Portugal-born forward has left plenty to be desired since signing from Udinese in a deal worth £25m, for sure, but he’s showing tentative signs of finding his feet and should now be handed his first Premier League starting berth of the season.

Despite having played infrequently for Everton this term the Guinea-Bissau international has won 1.2 aerial battles per game, as per Sofascore, which also stands at a 64% success rate.

Southampton scored a big win over Everton last time out. It reminded the Blues faithful that this will be a season of fighting, ups and downs both, and that Dyche will need to call upon the many members of his squad to ensure success in preserving top-flight status.

He’d be the first to admit that he hasn’t been up to scratch in Merseyside, scoring just four times in the Premier League across 36 appearances, but there’s no question about the muscular physique and commanding style that makes him the perfect fit for an important role under Dyche’s wing.

Once hailed for his “Lukaku-esque” qualities by the earlier-mentioned Kulig, he does show properties that emulate a one-time iteration of striker Romelu Lukaku, blessed with pace that could be utilised against the West Ham backline.

Calvert-Lewin might be caught offside with frustrating regularity, but Beto has the wheels to open up a new dimension for Dyche’s outfit, something that the likes of Dwight McNeil could feast upon in east London, threading passes through and stretching lines, concurrently allowing Iliman Ndiaye to overlap down the left.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Beto is starting to find his feet. He might not have got his name on the score sheet last time but he harnessed that confident energy that had been created through a well-worked goal against Fulham.

Dyche might prefer Calvert-Lewin as his starting option, but he’s not doing enough right now and Beto should be unleashed from the outset to ensure that Everton secure three points and perhaps leave the London Stadium having sentenced Lopetegui to the swing of the axe.

The Jamaican striker put City ahead against Liverpool in Sunday's WSL clash with a low effort into the bottom right corner after half an hour. After her goal, she raised her fist above her head in a Black Power salute. Shaw has been the key player again for City going forward, scoring 11 goals in the WSL this season, and was withdrawn against Liverpool after an hour – leaving the pitch with two goals and three points virtually in the bag.

The celebration comes after Shaw had been the subject of vile online abuse following City's 4-3 defeat to Arsenal, which meant she did not want to take to the field against Arsenal for her mental well-being later in the week. The striker has responded in the best way to the abuse by returning to her best form and showing off her clinical edge in front of goal.

Vernon Philander, the former South Africa quick who is a bowling consultant with the Pakistan team currently on tour in Bangladesh, will leave the squad bubble in Chattogram tomorrow, the fourth day of the ongoing first Test, and fly back early on Tuesday because of the “shutdown of flight operations” in his home country following the emergence of a new Covid-19 variant there.Philander was, in any case, scheduled to leave for South Africa at the end of the first of two Tests, but, as a PCB media statement said at the end of the third day’s play on Sunday, he has had to change his plans because of the worsening Covid-19 situation. Concerns around a new variant, called Omicron, has already disrupted the cricket schedule in South Africa, and could impact it further in the coming days.Related

After South Africa and Netherlands had to split points because of the weather in the first ODI of their series, the second and third games were postponed, and in nearby Zimbabwe, the women’s ODI World Cup qualifying event had to be called off – and subsequently cancelled altogether – following travel restrictions being imposed on large parts of southern Africa. An India A team is currently on tour in South Africa, and that series is going to continue as planned, because India has so far not imposed any restrictions on travel to and from southern Africa. The senior Indian men’s side is also scheduled to travel to South Africa in December for a series of three Tests, three ODIs and four T20Is, and the status of that tour is also, for the moment, unchanged. But if the borders close between now and December 8-9, when the Indians are expected to fly out, the prospect of the tour taking place will be severely diminished.News of the Omicron variant became public on Tuesday, November 23, and cases in the Gauteng province of South Africa, where the Netherlands series was taking place, have increased several-fold since. Although South Africa is reporting around 2000 new cases a day, there are concerns this will rise exponentially and stricter regulations are due to be introduced soon. South Africa is currently on Level 1 of 5 of its restrictions, the most lenient since the pandemic began, and the Netherlands ODI was the first time since March 2020 that cricket was played in front of a limited crowd.
