Multi-format player workloads top of agenda for England's new management

Mott, McCullum and Key to discuss schedule of 12 white-ball games in 25 days straight after India Test

England’s new coaching structure will hold face-to-face meetings next week to work out how to manage multi-format players’ workloads during a schedule of 12 limited-overs internationals in 25 days.Matthew Mott’s white-ball side will play three ODIs and three T20Is against both India and South Africa between July 7 and 31, a window which starts two days after the scheduled fifth day of the one-off Test against India at Edgbaston.Rob Key, England’s managing director, has openly stated that he sees Test cricket as the top priority this summer but with a T20 World Cup looming in October, Mott is keen to strike a balance between testing depth and getting his best team on the pitch together.Brendon McCullum’s desire to integrate leading white-ball players into his Test side may further complicate matters, though the immediate focus will be on Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, Joe Root, Chris Woakes and Mark Wood, with Ben Stokes not expected to be involved in limited-overs cricket this summer.”We’ve got some meetings next week and we’ll know a little bit more then,” Mott said after England’s clean sweep in their ODI series against Netherlands in Amstelveen. “I haven’t had a chance to sit down with Brendon and Rob and the rest of the selectors.”Once we get the opportunity to map out the little jigsaw puzzles that are going to be part of this going forward… we’ve all come in at pretty much the same time, so we’re all open to getting the best way to work through things and getting face-to-face next week will be really important for that.”Related

Eoin Morgan out of third Netherlands ODI with groin injury

Jos Buttler backs Eoin Morgan as ODI captain after putting personal seal on England series win

With the Netherlands tour squeezed in between the second and third New Zealand Tests, England gave opportunities to a handful of young players, most notably Phil Salt, who finished the series as its joint-highest run-scorer, and Brydon Carse, who impressed while auditioning for the ‘enforcer’ role once filled by Liam Plunkett.”The more opportunities you can give to players that far out from World Cups is absolute gold and you can’t miss that,” Mott said. “Whoever gets that opportunity, you want them to step up and they all have.”Mott is already expecting Eoin Morgan, his captain, to miss at least two of England’s dozen fixtures: Morgan has already signalled his reluctance to play back-to-back games amid concerns about his fitness and England play on consecutive days in both of their T20I series.Morgan’s consecutive ducks in Amstelveen last week preceded a recurrence of a recent groin strain, which caused him to sit out of the third ODI, leading the scrutiny over his position to mount. Mott was quick to defend him, describing him as “an inspirational leader” and suggested that missing Wednesday’s game could “light the fire” ahead of a busy July.”He’d love more runs: most batters do,” Mott said. “Over 200 games he’s been a very, very good player and I don’t think that’s going to change. Of course, he’d love to get some runs and there’s some opportunities coming up. Having sat out this game, I’m sure that will light the fire a little bit for him for the huge summer ahead.”We’ve already developed a great rapport. We caught up for a lovely lunch the other day in London and we share a lot of the same ideas: we both put the team at the forefront of our minds and work out how we get the best out of individuals to work as a team. He empowers others and believes in others. That really becomes obvious and I think the players thrive off that. They know he’s got their back.”Jos Buttler deputised as captain on Wednesday, “seamlessly transitioning” into Morgan’s shoes, in Mott’s words. But while McCullum has left a path open for him to return to Test cricket, Buttler himself was quick to shut down the prospect of a recall.”I haven’t had any conversations with anyone about that,” he said. “I’m very happy with where I’m at… it might not ever be a question that has to be answered.”Buttler batted at No. 4 in both of his innings in Amstelveen, finishing the series with 248 unbeaten runs off 134 balls including 19 sixes, and Mott said that he expects to use him in a floating role in 50-over cricket going forwards.”The way we set up, he’s listed at No. 5 but chatting to Morgs, there’s always a chance he’ll go up higher,” Mott said. “He’s the one player in the squad who is probably capable of batting anywhere and we’ll just assess the conditions and the match as to exactly where he bats in the order.”He’s special. He just brings something that’s very unique: the ability to hit the ball [for boundaries] off relatively good balls is something special. I thought at times the Netherlands bowlers really stuck to their task well but were still up against someone who was in a rich vein of form and has done that to a lot of the best bowlers around the world.”

Newcastle star’s “incredible” 9/10 display made Isak unplayable

That’s how you win a football match. Newcastle United ripped Ipswich Town to shreds on Saturday afternoon, looking as fluent as they’ve been in a long while and claiming a third successive victory in all competitions.

Newcastle’s patchy Premier League form this season has been a real frustration for Eddie Howe, whose tactical acumen and interpersonal skills remain closed to question. Still, something was missing.

Was it a lack of intensity? Burnout? A loss of direction after a testing, injury-hit campaign that preceded an uninspiring summer of missed opportunities?

Whatever has been out of kilter across the past few months, the Magpies seem to have reoriented themselves now. Howe’s side look as good as they’ve been in 2024, and there’s one man above all others who stood out at Portman Road. You know who.

Alexander Isak's stunning performance

Alexander Isak bagged a hat-trick at Ipswich to extend his brilliant run of clinical form, nine goals and three assists from nine Premier League matches, to be precise.

The Sweden international is bound to have a wealth of high-profile suitors looking jealously toward Tyneside and checking purses to ascertain the practicality of a bumper bid in 2025.

Correspondent Lee Ryder hailed the ‘ruthless display’ in his post-match player ratings, of which Isak received a perfect 10/10 score, but the 25-year-old did miss a glorious chance to grab another and might have been a little tame with one other shot.

Isak might steal the headlines – rightly so, to be fair – but he wasn’t actually the finest performer for the Toon on Saturday afternoon. Jacob Murphy was the architect of the success and certainly looks like a man playing with the foresight of a Newcastle swoop for a right winger.

Jacob Murphy was Howe's real hero

Newcastle’s interest in a new right winger has been well documented since the summer, with a £50m bid rejected for Anthony Elanga in August and reliable reports that Brentford’s Bryan Mbemuo is being eyed this winter.

Jacob Murphy celebrates for Newcastle

Miguel Almiron is on the periphery with no way back, but Murphy is definitely fighting for his place in the squad – and if his recent purple patch is anything to go by, he might just continue to play a big part in the year to come. Perhaps longer.

At Ipswich, Isak benefitted from the 28-year-old’s steady stream of playmaking, for Murphy created three big chances to complement his goal-and-assist display, as per Sofascore.

A wonderful back-heeled assist for Isak capped off the dream performance, with Ryder awarding him with a 9/10 match score that spoke clearly of his faculty for success in this competitive Newcastle side. The reporter singled out the winger’s “incredible work” for the assist.

Murphy also made an important tackle and won his only contested ground duel of the afternoon. He’s willing to fight and, now having notched three goals and three assists apiece from as many Premier League matches, has made Isak unplayable and himself undroppable as the festive period hits full swing.

Wolves hold talks over move for midfielder with £16m+ transfer possible

Wolverhampton Wanderers have held talks over a potential January move for a new midfielder, according to a new report.

Wolves latest news

Things are looking up for Wolves at the minute. Since the appointment of Vitor Pereira as the club’s new manager in mid-December, Wolves have seen a great improvement in both their performances and results.

Wolverhampton Wanderers managerVitorPereirareacts after the match

Not only have Pereira’s side beaten both Leicester City and Manchester United, they’ve also drawn with Tottenham Hotspur and are now, for the first time since early November, outside the Premier League relegation zone.

Perhaps even better news is that the club has, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, convinced forward Matheus Cunha to commit his long-term future to Wolves, despite interest from a host of the Premier League’s biggest clubs, including Arsenal and Manchester United.

Cunha has been Wolves’ star player this season, scoring 10 goals and registering four assists in 19 games. After Wolves’ 2-0 win over United, Pereira said of the Brazil international: “He is a special player. He can do things that can make the difference in small details.

“Matheus Cunha is a player, in my opinion, who can reach high standards in this league. I hope not [elsewhere] because we need him.”

Wolves hold talks with Rios

As well as securing the long-term services of Cunha, Wolves are also looking at bolstering their squad from the outside in the January transfer market. One man the club reportedly has their eye on is Palmeiras midfielder Richard Rios.

According to RTI Esporte, per Sport Witness, Wolves have recently held talks with Rios’ agent about a move to Molineux, and there is a “real possibility” that the Colombia international could make a switch to the Premier League in the near future.

Rios is understood to be a priority target for Pereira, with the Wolves boss personally keen, but he will face competition from Fulham, as well as clubs from France, Spain and Italy, to land him.

Palmeiras have claimed they will only sell Rios in January if his £83 million clause is activated, which would be beyond Wolves’ reach. RTI Esporte, however, claim that the Brazilian club could be bluffing, and that Wolves may agree a deal with Palmeiras for just £16.6 million plus bonuses, with Rios possibly arriving in the summer.

Rios has been described by South American football expert Ben Mattinson as a “ball-carrying machine.”

“When he gets the ball from deep, he brings it up the field with purpose and can eat up a lot of ground in a short space of time. His long legs allows him to open his stride and power away from defenders in no time,” Mattinson wrote on X.

Lewis Goldsworthy, James Rew bring promise of renewal to Trafalgar Road

Youthful partnership captivates Southport crowd on perfect summer’s day

Paul Edwards11-Jul-2022
You could argue the pandemic has taught us to treasure occasions like this; you may blithely insist a four-year absence was always likely to sharpen appetites; or you might simply maintain it was love of the game, a concept both vague and easily identified, that caused people to stream into Trafalgar Road in the hour before play, as Lancashire versus Somerset prepared to get underway this morning. What you could not doubt, though, was the appreciation shown for every good thing by the spectators that packed even the corners of this proud ground, sitting or standing six deep on the mound below the scoreboard. And let it be noted that never was the applause louder than three overs before the close, when Lewis Goldsworthy cover-drove George Balderson to the railway boundary and thus reached his maiden first-class century with his fifteenth four. There are places where the achievements of opposing players are greeted with grim expressions and perfunctory applause, if that. Southport is not amongst them. This may have been a parochial crowd – nothing wrong there, of course – but it was never rudely provincial. That would have disfigured the day and people wanted to remember it for better reasons. And not the least of them was the sustained applause that paid tribute to John Gwynne, who reported on darts, football and cricket in a long journalistic career and was lately Lancashire’s public address announcer.Gwynney, whose death was announced on Saturday, would have loved this day, and for all his marrow-deep Lancastrian loyalty, he would have enjoyed interviewing Goldsworthy and sharing the young cricketer’s joy. The latter emotion was very evident when the 21-year-old answered the questions of other journalists and it became clear this was a day he will remember for as long as he plays cricket, and then for decades after he retires. “It’s a lovely place to play – I’ve never been here before,” he said. “The crowd were brilliant and the sun was out – it was a beautiful day and I’m really proud.”Goldsworthy’s pleasure is justified in spades. For all that he stroked some fine boundaries in front of the wicket, his innings was notable for a sound defensive technique and for some skilful deflections behind the wicket off all Lancashire’s seamers. And what made his pleasure all the deeper was that he had shared most of his day with James Rew, an England Under-19 batter almost three years his junior with whom he put on 145, thus establishing a new fifth-wicket record for Somerset against Lancashire, thereby eclipsing the mark set by Sammy Woods and Henry Martyn at Taunton in 1905. Rew was making his County Championship debut and we were wondering whether he, too, was set for a century when he clipped a half-volley from Will Williams straight to Tom Bailey and departed for 70.”It was a great knock from James on his debut – the calmness he showed was brilliant,” Goldsworthy said. “I’m in the infancy of my career too so we were both talking to each other and it was a pleasure to be out there with him.”At the same time, Goldsworthy and Rew had to do a lot of hard work before they could enjoy the reward of that labour. For two and a half hours Lancashire’s bowlers made light of losing the toss and dominated the game. Twice in his first five overs, Tom Bailey slanted the new ball skilfully across Steve Davies and Matt Renshaw but neither left-hander covered the bounce and Rob Jones pocketed the chances at slip, Renshaw’s at the second grab. Tom Lammonby and George Bartlett then put on 60 and Lammonby’s straight driving was one of the relatively few joys of the morning for the Somerset supporters who draped a flag with a wyvern rampant on a garden fence at the Harrod Drive End. Six hours later, of course, it captured the mood of the day.The morning, though, was Lancashire’s. Twenty minutes before lunch Dane Vilas, who is keeping wicket in the absence of Phil Salt, called on the left-arm spin of Jack Morley from the Harrod Drive End. Morley’s second ball was well-flighted, its loop almost disgracefully seductive. Bartlett played over the top of it and was yorked for 27 by a ball travelling at something like 45mph. Half an hour after lunch Lammonby played defensively across the line to a delivery from Williams but his stroke was as lazy as the afternoon heat. The ball thudded into the heart of the pad and James Middlebrook sent the left-hander on his way for 47.The cricket and those watching it drifted into the heart of the day. Improbable stories were told of couples spending their honeymoon in Roland Butcher’s holiday flat. We waited for wickets to fall, for Somerset’s youngsters to be bamboozled by the skill of Bailey and Luke Wood. When he had made 18, Rew was dropped at slip by Luke Wells, a sharp chance off Morley. Some thought it didn’t matter. They were wrong. Somerset’s young batters grew in authority and now this warm day in Birkdale will be memorable for the innings of Goldsworthy and Rew and for the life of John Gwynne. And since Goldsworthy is the most courteous of fellows, he will not mind if this report ends with a recollection of a fine sports reporter and a lovely bloke.Ever a man of the people, Gwynne loved outground cricket and covered several matches at Trafalgar Road in the era when Lancashire’s visit was an undisputed annual ritual. One year he was asked to report on a match for BBC radio through the day, before doing a piece to camera on the regional evening news programme . Gwynne decided to change into a suit for his TV appearance but it was the 1970s and he had gone in for one of the colourful, wide-lapelled numbers that were sadly fashionable at the time. Just prior to going on air, the gaudily dressed Gwynne entered the press tent. “Bloody hell, Gwynney,” exclaimed Neil Hallam of “I didn’t realise you were on .

Everton eyeing dream Moyes alternative who once held talks with Liverpool

Merseyside was rocked as Everton dismissed Sean Dyche from his duties hours before their FA Cup third-round tie against Peterborough.

The Friedkin Group have barely settled into their seat at the head of the table, but the ruthlessness shown by the new owners will perhaps feed supporters with a sense of ambition.

Everton manager Sean Dyche.

Everton are 16th in the Premier League, two points above the drop zone, and appear to have lined up a replacement already.

Everton lining up Dyche's replacement

Numerous sources including The Athletic have revealed that Everton have identified their former manager David Moyes as the top target to replace Dyche in the dugout.

Moyes has been out of work since departing West Ham United at the end of the 2023/24 season having led the Hammers to three successive European campaigns, the middle of which brought triumph in the Conference League.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast's Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

However, the Goodison Park side could go down a different track. Transfer insider Graeme Bailey has confirmed that Everton are interested in moving for former AC Milan boss Paulo Fonseca, having held talks with West Ham before they appointed Graham Potter this week.

Why Paulo Fonseca would be "perfect" for Everton

The most distinctive tactical shift would be in regard to Everton’s emphasis on ball retention. Fonseca led LOSC Lille throughout the 2023/24 campaign and recorded the second-highest possession average at 57%, behind only Paris Saint-Germain.

Lille bossPaulo Fonseca.

It’s a progressive and more modern-catered style, with reporter Robin Bairner confirming last year that Liverpool had “held talks” with the 51-year-old. The Reds won’t be displeased with their final decision given Arne Slot’s success, but it suggests that Everton might be in line for a wonderful new chapter.

Indeed, Fonseca has maintained a respectable points average across his past five clubs, and even though he was dismissed by AC Milan last month, the Portuguese’s 1.75 average far surpasses Dyche’s at Everton (1.23 per game).

Fonseca has confirmed in the past that he seeks to win, first and foremost, but that he strives to do so with style, commenting that his team’s set up to “dominate and create more chances than the opposition.”

A seven-time trophy winner with Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine, there would be no promises of silverware at Everton, but perhaps a willingness to drive the club forward and into warmer climes, away from the biting cold of the relegation fodder.

Moyes would be a more pragmatic appointment, but perhaps one which would add a layer of security and stability that Fonseca’s expansive approach cannot promise.

Couple that with the fact he’s “perfect in the dressing room”, as was said by Fabrizio Romano, if TFG want to show some ambition, this may be the perfect move to make.

Spurs' crisis deepens after Chelsea lossPostecoglou furious with the role of VARBelieves AI could take over refereeing soonFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Tottenham’s struggles in the Premier League continued on Thursday night as they slumped to a narrow 1-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea secured all three points thanks to a second-half strike from Enzo Fernandez, leaving Ange Postecoglou’s men languishing in 14th place in the table, with just ten wins in 30 matches.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The result, however, was quickly overshadowed by another contentious VAR intervention, which saw Tottenham’s potential equaliser ruled out after a lengthy review. The incident occurred in the 69th minute when Pape Sarr thought he had brought Spurs level, only for referee Craig Pawson to be summoned to the pitchside monitor. Following a painstaking six-minute delay, the goal was eventually disallowed for a foul in the buildup – a decision that left Postecoglou fuming.

WHAT POSTECOGLOU SAID

Speaking after the match, the Australian manager did not hold back his thoughts on the use of video technology, questioning the entire direction football is heading.

"But see that's the problem, whether I think it's a foul or not, what does it matter? What matters is, VAR was called in for clear and obvious errors," he told reporters.

"I’ve said this a few times already. We all sat on our couches last night and watched an incident where I reckon if I did a straw poll and asked: ‘After the first replay what did you think?’ How long did it take tonight? Six minutes. For a clear and obvious error."
He added: "Who cares if it was a foul or not? There were so many incidents out there. What does it matter? What’s the point of having a referee then? Clear and obvious means you go to the screen, standing around for six minutes. Not me, because I’m very vocal about it, we all accept it. It’s going to be refereed by AI soon. Like I said, we might as well dispense with the players at some point when some genius comes up with a game with no participants at some point. Referees aren’t refereeing.

"If anyone believes when VAR was brought in we would be sitting around for six minutes with a microscope. It’s irrelevant if it’s a foul. It’s totally irrelevant. Then they will say they came there with a decision. But that’s irrelevant. Jarrod Gillet was on VAR tonight but maybe if he had been on VAR last night maybe he would have come to a different outcome. I don’t like it, mate, I’ve never liked it, I don’t see how it’s benefitted our game."

Tottenham are set to face Southampton on Sunday, a match that will likely be seen as a must-win given the Saints are at the bottom of the standings. Following the domestic fixture, Spurs will turn their attention to European competition, hosting Eintracht Frankfurt in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final next Thursday.

UCL giants want £60m Man Utd star who could now leave with Marcus Rashford

Following a week full of ups and downs, Manchester United are reportedly facing the prospect of losing one of their star men alongside Marcus Rashford, with European giants now swarming to land his signature in a loan-to-buy deal.

Man Utd transfer news

In between a dramatic derby day victory over Manchester City and a frustrating 4-3 defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur to exit the Carabao Cup at the quarter-final stage, it’s Rashford who’s been stealing the Manchester United headlines. The winger was dropped by Ruben Amorim for the Manchester derby and swiftly responded by telling journalist Henry Winter that he’s ready for a new challenge.

Since then, the England international has also been omitted from Manchester United’s trip to face Tottenham Hotspur, sparking further rumours over his future and just who will be keen to swoop in and secure his signature.

Rashford may not be the only one heading for the exit door, however. According to Caught Offside, European giants are now chasing the arrival of Alejandro Garnacho in an initial loan move which will include a buy option of £60m in 2025. Among the clubs racing for his signature are Atletico Madrid, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Amorim must axe 4/10 Man Utd star who looks a "shadow of his old self"

Man Utd crashed out of the Carabao Cup after a crazy encounter…

By
Joe Nuttall

Dec 20, 2024

Like his teammate, Garnacho was dropped against Manchester City and, by Amorim’s admission, left upset. The Red Devils boss told reporters as relayed by Fabrizio Romano before the Spurs game: “Garnacho is doing really good, he trained really well. He seems a little bit upset with me and that is perfect! I was really, really happy because I would do the same. He is ready for this game.”

Man Utd must keep "brave" Garnacho

Whilst it wouldn’t be absurd to suggest that Rashford’s best years have come and gone in a Manchester United shirt, the same can’t be said for Garnarcho. And after Amorim laid down the gauntlet by dropping the 20-year-old last weekend, he must rise to the challenge and become the star that many expect him to be in years to come.

As for Manchester United, they must do everything in their power to keep hold of the Argentine, who was a particular bright spark at the end of Erik ten Hag’s tenure. The Dutchman was certainly a fan of Garnacho too, telling reporters as relayed by Reuters earlier this year: “I love to work with Garnacho.

“He’s a player who needs a challenge, he likes a challenge, he is very brave, he’s very confident, our job is to push him to high levels. He has high potential and now we have to get the potential out, therefore you have to work day by day.”

Whether Amorim will develop the same adoration for the Manchester United star remains to be seen, but Garnacho seems to have plenty of potential suitors outside of Old Trafford.
