Romano: Euro club now make bid to sign £100k-p/w West Ham star this month

A European giant are now in talks to sign one of West Ham’s first-team players this month as they look to raid Graham Potter’s side in the winter window.

Potter's West Ham debut ends in defeat

After taking over from Julen Lopetegui with West Ham sitting down in 14th in the Premier League, Potter’s first game ended in defeat as his side were knocked out of the FA Cup by Aston Villa.

Despite that, the new Hammers boss saw plenty of positives from that performance. “Our performance gave me a lot of encouragement, the way the players tried to do what we asked them to do. We’re just disappointed now because we’re out and wanted to go through.

“We just try to get the team into a good shape. The talent is there but it’s just about trying to get the team together as a collective. That’s what we’re trying to do.”

West Ham consider signing £40m England international who's told he can go

The Hammers have drawn up a list of targets for Graham Potter.

ByEmilio Galantini Jan 11, 2025

However, the defeat is set to have longer-term implications for Potter, with Niclas Füllkrug having been substituted off after just 15 minutes through injury, and reports have claimed that he will miss up to three months after scans confirmed the significance of the issue.

That means that West Ham may well be forced into the transfer market, with Michail Antonio also sidelined indefinitely after a car crash last month, while Jarrod Bowen is still recovering from a broken foot, leaving Danny Ings as the only recognised option to lead the line.

But first, they will have to fight off interest in other members of their first team between now and the end of the January transfer window.

European club table bid for West Ham midfielder

Now, according to Fabrizio Romano, AS Monaco have made an offer to sign Mexican midfielder Edson Alvarez on loan this month.

The Ligue 1 side are third in France as things stand, and are looking to bolster their ranks to ensure that they qualify for the Champions League again this season.

To that end, they have made an offer to sign the West Ham man, tabling an initial loan offer for the 27-year-old for the remainder of the campaign.

Unsurprisingly, West Ham have rejected this offer, having signed Alvarez for £35m just 18 months ago and with the Mexican still having three and a half years left to run on his £100,000 a week deal at the London Stadium. He is considered an “important player”, as peer Romano, something that makes a move tricky for the Monegasques.

Handed a start in Potter’s first game in charge, Alvarez has been a regular when fit for the Hammers this season, starting 11 games.

He could continue to figure for the new West Ham boss should he remain at the club. However, in news that may concern Hammers fans, Romano adds that talks continue “as Monaco want Alvarez and can offer UCL football”, while West Ham look on course to miss out on European football altogether barring a major turnaround in the second half of the campaign.

Tottenham also eyeing £200k-p/w forward if Mathys Tel deal collapses

Tottenham Hotspur are believed to be targeting a high-earning forward, who could come as an alternative to Bayern Munich gem Mathys Tel, after the Frenchman very recently emerged as a primary target for the north Londoners.

Mathys Tel deal agreed but Spurs waiting on player's approval

Spurs head coach Ange Postecoglou is in dire need of a new outfield signing before deadline day on February 3rd, with the Lilywhites among Tel’s main suitors after the 19-year-old made his decision to leave Bayern this window (Fabrizio Romano).

Vincent Kompany’s side, as per reliable French transfer journalist Fabrice Hawkins, are asking for up to £50 million to let Tel depart the Allianz Arena on a permanent deal. Spurs have reportedly now agreed a deal at that price, but must still convince the player to give the green light, which they have not yet done.

That being said, they also face very stiff competition for the France Under-21 international’s signature, with Man United, Arsenal, Aston Villa and “several” Premier League sides looking at a winter deal for Tel.

In the event Spurs miss out on Tel’s signature, as they did with former top January target Randal Kolo Muani, then they’ll need to have alternative options already identified this late in the window. According to ESPN, one of them could be Athletic Bilbao forward Nico Williams.

Tottenham monitoring Nico Williams ahead of potential move

As per the broadcast giant, Tottenham are monitoring Williams in late January ahead of a potential move, following a 2023/2024 campaign where he both starred at Euro 2024 and bagged 19 assists in all competitions for his club.

While the Spain international is an out-and-out winger, unlike Tel who can play anywhere across the front three, he could be a statement capture for the north Londoners if they look to trigger his £49 million release clause before deadline day.

The only sticking point could be his wages, as the 22-year-old earns around £200,000-per-week at Bilbao, and a salary in excess of that figure at N17 would make him Tottenham’s highest earner – even above the likes of Son Heung-min.

That being said, there is potential for Williams to be Postecoglou’s own version of Bukayo Saka going by his output from last campaign, and he’s exactly the kind of pacey, direct, tricky winger that the under-fire Australian is crying out for.

“Williams, for me, is exceptional. He reminds me of Cristiano Ronaldo when Cristiano was young,” said England legend Wayne Rooney. “He’s a big lad, he’ll take the ball and sometimes tries too much but usually makes the right decisions.”

According to The Mirror, United want to sign a striker, two midfielders, a centre-back, and at least one wing-back this summer. The report adds that that could hand Onana a lifeline despite making a number of costly errors for the Red Devils.

The report adds that while United are interested in signing Royal Antwerp keeper Senne Lammens, Amorim may continue with Onana as his number one next season. The Mirror states that that will only change if the Red Devils get an offer upwards of £20 million ($26.5m) for the 29-year-old, two years on from signing him from Inter Milan for £47.2m ($62.5m).

Onana has been the subject of interest from the Saudi Pro League, and United are said to be hopeful that big bids come from that part of the world, or elsewhere, this summer.

Per The Athletic, Ancelotti is expected to leave Real this summer and accept the role as Brazil's new permanent manager ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Reports suggest Brazil sent a representative to Madrid to watch the second leg of their quarter-final against Arsenal as Los Blancos were eliminated from the Champions League, with the intention of meeting Ancelotti. The CBF have denied this, although Ancelotti is said to be in advanced talks over a move, and Alonso is seemingly poised to take his place.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Alonso has already been sounded out over the prospect of taking the Madrid job and is said to be the frontrunner for the position. Madrid are reported to be desperate to clarify their situation before the Club World Cup starts in June. They have scheduled talks with the Italian for after the Copa del Rey final and it looks increasingly likely that the Italian will depart.

Ancelotti has overseen a glittering period in Real's history since being reappointed in 2021. He has won the Champions League with Real three times, and has done so twice in his current reign. He has also overseen two La Liga wins, two UEFA Super Cup wins, two Supercopa de Espana wins, a FIFA Club World Cup triumph, and a FIFA Intercontinental Cup triumph.

Crystal Palace now want to sign £100k-p/w Chelsea "artist" after Chalobah

Crystal Palace now want to beat a European giant to sign another Chelsea youngster for Oliver Glasner this month, according to a fresh report.

Crystal Palace want new signings

Oliver Glasner has already revealed that he expects his side to be busy this January as he looks to continue their upward Premier League trajectory in the second half of the season. Currently 15th, the Eagles have pulled well clear of the drop zone thanks to a strong run of results, and are now eyeing up the sides above them, with just three points separating them and 12th placed Tottenham Hotspur.

They face two relegation candidates and three of the four sides directly above them in their next five Premier League outings, which could see them end that run of games in a much better spot, or sucked back into a relegation battle.

But they are working behind the scenes to land new faces, having already had an offer to sign Liverpool youngster Ben Doak rejected this window.

“We are working on two transfers, I don’t know how quick we will get them done. It looks okay and then I will talk about the names”, Glasner explained before his side’s FA Cup third round win over Stockport County when quizzed on potential transfers.

“If we can keep the squad together, we’re really pleased with how the players have developed over the last months and also how we created a team spirit again after not an easy start. No one told me he wants to leave. The players want to stay here.”

Now, they have been credited with an interest in another Chelsea player following the success of Trevoh Chalobah’s loan.

Crystal Palace take on Borussia Dortmund for Chelsea midfielder

That comes as a report in Spain [via Sport Witness] claims that Crystal Palace are one of the sides in the running to sign Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka this month.

The Blues midfielder is expected to leave Chelsea before the window shuts, having seen his opportunities this season severely limited. And Borussia Dortmund are one of the sides credited with a strong interest in the England U21 international.

Now, the Eagles are also reportedly keen to sign the out-of-favour midfielder, who was hailed as an “artist” by Chelsea icon Marcel Desailly.

Chelsea's Carney Chukwuemeka in action

“I like Carney Chukwuemeka because he is like an artist who comes onto the stage. He has got the ball. Now is my moment. Shine. You see the dribbling. He is sure about what he is going to do and he is clinical,” he explained.

Of course, Crystal Palace face a problem over any potential move in that it would have to be a permanent signing as things stand. The Premier League rules state that no club can have two loan players from the same side, while the Eagles have already taken Chalobah on loan.

Chelsea are demanding Chukwuemeka’s £40m release clause for him to leave on a permanent basis, which may prove a major obstacle to his arrival in south London, while his £100,000 a week wages are also likely to be a concern given that club captain Marc Guehi currently takes home just half of that.

That could change if Chelsea were to recall the English defender, a prospect which is yet to be ruled out and led to Chalobah being left out of the win over Stockport due to “contractual issues”, leaving him not cup-tied should the Blues opt to trigger his return. Should that happen, a loan move for Chukwuemeka could be feasible, but would leave a gaping hole in the Palace backline.

Rangers may have their own Lyall Cameron in "highly rated" Ibrox gem

Glasgow Rangers head into the final days of the transfer market having made just one signing. Defender Rafael Fernandes has joined on a six-month loan deal, which includes an option to buy at the end of the season.

Philippe Clement will know that the Premiership title is out of reach given Celtic’s dominance, but the Scottish Cup should be targeted, as well as a deep run in the Europa League.

There might be a late flurry of transfer activity at Ibrox before the deadline on Monday evening, but it appears as though the manager is planning ahead for next season already.

Rangers' pursuit of Lyall Cameron

As reported earlier this week, Rangers are currently in talks with Lyall Cameron over a pre-contract agreement.

The Dundee sensation has been linked with a move to Ibrox throughout the previous few weeks of the January transfer window, but it now looks as though Clement is aiming to get the Scot tied down.

This move could be a wise one, planning ahead for the 2025/26 season by signing one of the finest midfielders outside the Old Firm.

The Gers do have several of their own young talents emerging through the academy, however, and might they already have their own Cameron in someone who has just departed on loan?

Cole McKinnon could be Rangers’ own Lyall Cameron

Cameron has been outstanding this season, scoring eight goals while registering seven assists for the Dens Park side in all competitions this term.

His ability to play either in a defensive role or slightly further forward could give Clement plenty of options next season.

Cole McKinnon has been touted as one of the finest midfielders the academy has produced in quite some time, even being hailed by journalist Jordan Campbell before he moved to Partick Thistle on loan in 2022, who said:

He registered six goal contributions during his spell in Maryhill and this led to the midfielder making three appearances for the Light Blues last term, even making his European debut against Benfica.

During his cameo against the Portuguese giants, McKinnon won 100% of his aerial duels and lost possession just three times, certainly not looking out of his depth.

The 22-year-old was sent out on loan last month to Championship side Ayr United, who are battling it out at the top of the division.

In The Pipeline

This should be another great learning experience and there is no doubt McKinnon could be a vital squad player under Clement during 2025/26.

If played in his preferred position, the Scot loves to push forward regularly, as evidenced during his spell with Partick.

Cameron could be an excellent signing, especially if he can replicate his Dundee form, but in McKinnon, Clement already has a creative asset who could be ready to hit his peak at the club over the next couple of years.

PONTE PRETA QUASE MARCA

Pakistan recall Nawaz, Ameen for Women's T20 Asia Cup

Opener Sidra Ameen and wicketkeeper-batter Sidra Nawaz have been recalled into the Pakistan side for the Women’s T20 Asia Cup, which will be staged in Sylhet next month. The 15-member squad also includes uncapped allrounder Sadaf Shamas.Pakistan have made three changes to the side that turned out for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham last month with Anam Amin, Gull Feroza and Iram Javed missing out. Bismah Maroof continues to captain the side which also has Nashra Sandhu, Natalia Pervaiz, Umme Hani and Waheeda Akhtar as standby players.Ameen last played a T20I in 2019 but has shown impressive 50-over form this year. She was named Player of the Series in Pakistan’s 2-1 win over Sri Lanka in June with scores of 76, 123 and 19 in the three ODIs. She had also scored a century against Bangladesh at the Women’s World Cup in Hamilton earlier this year. Ameen was rewarded with a central contract for her stellar showing this year.”Sidra Ameen has been in good form of late. She did well in the practice matches and became only the second Pakistan women batter to score two ODI centuries recently. Her presence at the top of the order will instil stability,” Asmavia Iqbal, the national women’s selector, said.Nawaz, on the other hand, comes in as backup for frontline wicketkeeper-batter Muneeba Ali. The 28-year-old has not played a single T20I this year but has been in the ODI scheme of things for Pakistan.”We have also selected an additional keeper in Sidra Nawaz because of the long duration of the tournament. On these tracks, we need a specialist wicketkeeper as a backup for Muneeba Ali, in case she becomes unavailable,” Iqbal said.”Sadaf Shamas did extraordinary well in the recent practice matches and we feel this was the right time to elevate her to the national side.”The release also stated that PCB will start the search for a new head coach after David Hemp decided to not extend his two-year contract in October. The rest of the side remains on a consistent line.
