Real Madrid player ratings vs. Borussia Dortmund: Kylian Mbappe’s bicycle kick saves Blancos from late embarrassment, books trip to Club World Cup semifinals

Xabi Alonso's men made hard work of the result, but did enough to beat the Bundesliga giants

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.- Kylian Mbappe delivered in dramatic fashion, as the French star scored what would be the eventual game-winner in extra time with an overhead kick from a corner to seal a 3-2 win over Borussia Dortmund in the Club World Cup quarterfinals.

Gonzalo Garcia continued his hot streak, and Fran Garcia showed why Real Madrid might not need a new left-back, as Los Blancos saw off Borussia Dortmund 3-2 to book a spot in the Club World Cup semi-final. Xabi Alonso's side scored twice within the first 20 minutes and made things complicated in the final five. They seemed to be cruising until second-half stoppage time when two Dortmund goals – either side of a Mbappe's wondergoal – led them to a nervy 3-2 win.

Madrid didn't need long to build an early lead. Gonzalo Garcia opened the scoring in the 10th minute after a well-worked move, the academy product side-footing past goalkeeper Gregor Kobel for a 1-0 lead. Within minutes, they were humming. Fran Garcia made it two after 20 minutes, ghosting into the box unmarked to tap home Trent Alexander-Arnold's cross. Jude Bellingham might have made it three shortly after but put his shot wide after a lovely flowing move.

They rather took their foot off the gas as the game wore on. That is, of course, some credit to Dortmund, who were sturdier at the back and more dangerous on the break. Aurelien Tchouameni almost made it three on the hour mark, but his curled effort only rattled the bar. And then the problems started. Max Beier battered home to make it 2-1. Mbappe responded two minutes later with his goal. But Dortmund stayed in it when Serhou Guirassy converted from the spot after he was brought down by Dean Huijsen – who was shown his marching orders. A late save from Thibaut Courtois as time expired secured the victory.

Perhaps this wasn't the lopsided scoreline it might have been, but it's the win that counts. PSG await in the semi-final, which will undoubtedly be a far more intense affair.

Thibaut Courtois (7/10):

Could do nothing about either goal, and made a remarkable save as time expired.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (7/10):

Set up the second Madrid goal thanks to a signature cut-back. Subbed after an hour or so.

Antonio Rudiger (7/10):

Went about his 1v1 work effectively. Kept Serhou Guirassy quiet.

Dean Huijsen (5/10):

A composed showing for 90 minutes. Got sent off in second half stoppage time.

Fran Garcia (8/10):

Took his goal well – his first since May 2024. Scampered up and down the wing. Madrid are supposedly in the hunt for a left-sided defender. On this evidence, they don't need one.

Aurelien Tchouameni (8/10):

More defensive midfielder than centre-back as Xabi Alonso continues to tweak his formation. Turned in a really good performance at the base of midfield and was unlucky not to score.

Federico Valverde (7/10):

Ran tirelessly, created a couple of chances, and covered well for Alexander-Arnold.

Jude Bellingham (7/10):

Enjoyed some nice marauding runs forward, and linked up with Alexander-Arnold well. A good hour, all said.

GettyAttack

Arda Guler (8/10):

Floated around the attacking third, creating chances and finding all of the pockets of space. Assisted the Madrid opener.

Gonzalo Garcia (8/10):

Scored a really nice goal and was a pest throughout. The fact that he stayed on when Vini went off indicated that Alonso might want him in the XI long-term.

Vinicius Jr (7/10):

Stretched the defence with his pace, and almost scored a ridiculous goal in the first half. Faded in the second and was subbed after an hour.

Luka Modric (6/10):

Did some nice things on the ball, and caused problems. A summer stroll, all said.

Kylian Mbappe (6/10):

Ran in behind, found spaces, but never created a clear look for himself, until of course, he scored Madrid's winner. Still, his role in this system remains unclear.

Dani Ceballos (6/10):

Moved the ball well.

Raul Asencio (N/A):

No time to make an impact

Rodrygo (N/A):

No time to make an impact

Xabi Alonso (7/10):

A rollercoaster of emotions. Madrid were excellent for 30 minutes, good for 60, and then frantic for the last five. He will have wanted more control here.

England found themselves en route to Delhi but won't take Afghanistan lightly

Defending champions’ “crisis” lasted all of five days before victory over Bangladesh got them back on track

Trott wants his Afghanistan team to display ‘more consistency’

Big PictureMuch like gap year students, England left Dharamsala having found themselves, arriving in the sprawling metropolis of Delhi on Wednesday with a self-regard more in step with their white-ball dominance over the last eight years.Their “crisis” lasted all of five days. A nine-wicket battering at the hands of New Zealand led to much introspection, but an equally dominant victory over Bangladesh has eased more than just Net Run Rate woes.Reece Topley regarded the result as “a step in the right direction”, one he facilitated with 4 for 43 after being drafted in to replace Moeen Ali. Throw in strong starts from Dawid Malan and Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow ticking and Mark Wood back up to speed, and things are beginning to look more balanced and settled for the defending champions. They will be the first to tell you this is a marathon, not a sprint. South Africa, India and New Zealand may have charged out in front, but England’s seasoned vets know the drill. Tapering is the name of the game, in a format that allows the odd misstep. It also helps that bitter rivals Australia are flunking, making that route into the top four a little less crowded.Related

Trott hopes Rashid & Co bring 'joy and happiness' to post-earthquake Afghanistan

What's holding back Rashid Khan, the ODI bowler?

England did not need to experience defeat in their opener to narrow their focus, but it does mean they will not take Afghanistan lightly. Whether Ben Stokes makes his first appearance of the campaign – the signs in training have been encouraging, though he is likely to be kept in cotton wool – this represents another opportunity to tune up, especially for a middle order that has yet to flex their wares, Jos Buttler included. All that is far from ideal for the tenth-placed side, who have shown flashes of their best selves among two broadly ineffectual displays. Rashid Khan’s failure to launch, not helped by being used questionably by captain Hashmatullah Shahidi, has given a usually sparkling line-up a dour complexion. Below-par scores batting first has also meant exciting left-arm quick Fazalhaq Farooqi has had little to work with, particularly at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium on Wednesday when India made light work of their 273 target, knocking it off with 15 overs to spare. These failings have been put into perspective by matters at home. Around 1,000 Afghans have lost their lives after earthquakes hit the west of the country this week, with thousands more injured. Beyond donations of match fees to help those affected is a sense of duty to lift spirits with an upturn on the field. The healing power of sport only extends so far, but Sunday is an opportunity to offer emotional relief for both fans and the players themselves. This will be only the third meeting between these two teams in the format, both previous occasions coming in World Cups. Eoin Morgan’s 17 sixes at Manchester in 2019 blasted England to a score of 397 for 6 batting first, a total they threatened to better against Bangladesh last time out before stumbling through the back end of their 50 overs. They will fancy something similar if they get first dibs on one of the best batting decks in the competition.Dawid Malan is all smiles after reaching yet another ODI century•Getty ImagesForm GuideEngland WLWWW (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Afghanistan LLLLLIn the spotlight: Adil Rashid and Mohammad NabiIt has been a quiet start for Adil Rashid, the kind that makes idle minds wonder. The 35-year-old has so far managed a solitary wicket – that of Bangladesh’s Mahedi Hasan – from 17 overs that have cost 89 runs. He arrived in India as something of an injury doubt, after a tight hamstring kept him out of all but the first of four ODIs against New Zealand in September (taking 1 for 70 in eight overs). Not to mention a long-term right shoulder issue requiring constant management. He was noticeably slower against Bangladesh with 32 per cent of his deliveries below 80kph, compared to 10 per cent versus New Zealand, suggesting a change of tact, though he did have more runs to play with. A notable haul on Sunday would be welcome for a player expected to sign off from ODIs next month.Mohammad Nabi is another at the back end of his career but is not exactly wearing his advancing years lightly. Scores of 6 and 19, aligned with 0 for 18 and 0 for 32 speak of a wider downturn in form. He has just one ODI half-century in his last 21 innings, a period that stretches over the last three years, and is averaging 39.70 with off-spin lacking its usual guile. At 38, his status as a trailblazing cricketer is secure, but some vintage Nabi would be a neat reminder of how he earned that status, and help Afghanistan avoid the wooden spoon.Mohammad Nabi took time to get going against india•ICC/Getty ImagesTeam newsChris Woakes missed Friday’s training session due to a stomach illness but was back with the group on Saturday evening. Nevertheless, England may use this as an opportunity to give David Willey his first appearance of the tournament and could also be tempted to hand Gus Atkinson a start to rest Mark Wood. Stokes netted for around half an hour at the final training session, though only faced sidearm throws rather than bowlers.England: (possible) 1 Jonny Bairstow, 2 Dawid Malan, 3 Joe Root, 4 Harry Brook, 5 Jos Buttler (capt & wk), 6 Liam Livingstone, 7 Sam Curran, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Mark Wood, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Reece TopleyJonathan Trott was tight-lipped about potential changes. There is an outside chance left-arm wrist spinner Noor Ahmed is drafted in, but that would require a major rebalancing of the XI given how little he offers with the bat. They are expected to go in unchanged.Afghanistan: (possible) 1 Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), 2 Ibrahim Zadran, 3 Rahmat Shah, 4 Hashmatullah Shahidi (c), 5 Azmatullah Oarzai, 6 Mohammad Nabi, 7 Najibullah Zadran, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Mujeeb Ur Rahman, 10 Naveen-ul-Haq, 11 Fazalhaq FarooqiPitch and conditionsThere is fresh, live grass on the surface, which suggests plenty of pace and carry. Both teams are anticipating another belting track, akin to the one last week which South Africa used to great effect, setting a World Cup record of 428 for 5 against Sri Lanka.Stats and trivia England and Afghanistan contested the first T20i at this venue during 2016’s World T20. Afghanistan were on the cusp of an upset, reducing England to 85 for 7 before Moeen Ali and David Willey put on a 57-run stand, then combined for three wickets as England triumphed by 15 runs. Ramat Shah is set to earn his 100th ODI cap. Mohammad Nabi is set to pick up his 150th ODI cap.Quotes”We don’t want to look at what could go wrong: we’ll look at what we can do right and how we can affect the game in the right manner. That’s how we’ll prepare. It’s about going in and delivering that.”
“I don’t think Rashid needs the conditions to suit him to cause mayhem. I can’t speak highly enough about the guy and the way he performs and his passion for playing for the side. I know that he puts a lot of pressure on himself to perform and to lead the attack.”

Bradburn: Pakistan don't get to play a lot of the top nations

Pakistan’s coach Grant Bradburn stopped short of calling them an isolated team in international cricket, but did point out the lack of experience against big teams and in India as they fight to stay alive and hope for other results to go their way in the World Cup.After winning the first two matches, against Netherlands and Sri Lanka, Pakistan have lost four in a row, including against archrivals India, and stand on the brink of elimination. Not only do they need to keep winning every remaining match but also hope one of the four teams in the lead right now slips down.Bradburn was asked what went wrong with Pakistan after they were once among the favourites, especially till Naseem Shah got injured during the Asia Cup. “Look I’m not sure where you get favourites from because there are 10 teams in this tournament, there’s 150 cricketers who are the best on the planet,” he said. “In terms of the ICC rankings, we know they are skewed because we don’t get to play India, we don’t get to play a lot of the top nations who haven’t been to Pakistan of late.”We were No. 5 in April, we became No. 1 recently before the tournament, and that might be where you term the phrase favourites. But we’re realistic. We have not been the best in the world as yet, so which highlights where we are in this tournament right now. We have no divine right to beat anyone in this tournament. We have to play quality cricket, and we have to put all three departments of our game together.Related

  • Why middling scores make for the best kind of ODI

“We are desperate to bring joy to our nation. We are desperate to make our nation very proud of this cricket team. And we are also realistic in the knowledge that we haven’t put all departments of our game together over the last four games but four losses does not define who we are as players, as coaches or a team, So we’re determined now to focus on what we can control and that is putting our best on the park in these last three games and then leaving that to fate as – to determine the remainder of the tournament for Pakistan.”If you consider India, Australia, England, New Zealand and South Africa the “top teams” in ODI cricket – England are defending champions after all – Pakistan have played 19 ODIs against them between the World Cups. Sri Lanka and West Indies have played more than that. New Zealand’s aggregate is lower but they are also one of them. Among teams playing this tournament, only Bangladesh and Netherlands have played less against the “top teams”.Pakistan go into their match against Bangladesh on Tuesday on the back of four losses•ICC via Getty Images

Asked if that, coupled with Pakistan’s players not playing the IPL, makes them feel isolated, Bradburn answered in the negative, but also did point out the lack of experience in these conditions. “No, we don’t feel isolated or intimidated by that,” Bradburn said. “Mickey [Arthur] and I, when we took over this team in April, six months ago, we recognised that the team was playing a gear or two below where we wanted the team to be playing in terms of the brand, because we know the brand of cricket that is winning against quality teams is a more dynamic brand than perhaps, we were playing. So, we set a new course in April this year.”So, it hasn’t been a big lead-in to this major tournament for us. Ideally preparation for a tournament like this starts four years ago. We started six months ago and changed direction in the way that we want to play the game of cricket , especially the one-day brand. We’ve shown some positive signs of that over the last six months, and as I’ve mentioned, during this tournament, we’re very proud of some of the performances that we’ve put on the park.”It’s taking a little bit longer than we were hoping, but we want to play a dynamic brand that matches the challenge of the conditions we’re playing in. So, this tournament is foreign condition for us. None of our players have played here before. Every venue is a new one, including this one. So, we’ve done our homework meticulously on our opposition, on our venues that we’re playing at, and we’re prepared very, very well for each and every encounter. But the reality is that each and every venue is a new one for us and we don’t feel disadvantaged at all in terms of the knowledge, the quality, the skill, the backing that we have for this team of cricketers.”We’ve been consistent with our selection; we’ve backed our players and we still back our players to perform and show the brand of cricket that we want to play that matches the task at hand and also, we’re the best in the world. And we’ve acknowledged over the past period of time that we’re not at that level that we want to be, but we’re certainly pushing hard to improve our brand of cricket because we know that the skills are within our players.”Pakistan’s fast bowlers haven’t found a lot of swing in the World Cup•AFP/Getty Images

Pakistan’s strength has historically been – and presently is – fast bowling but, as mentioned here, fast bowlers with prior IPL experience have done much better in this tournament. Bradburn did speak of the challenges his fast bowlers faced in the absence of swing.”Look, we haven’t got on a roll in this tournament, and we understand that it’s fine lines here in Indian conditions,” Bradburn said. “And particularly, I would say, with our bowlers, we’re renowned for having a fantastic group of fast bowlers, both here and at home. We have a great resource of fast-bowling talent in Pakistan. We do rely on swing, but we haven’t experienced too much swing here. The balls are different. The conditions are different, and certainly the ball tends to wear a lot quicker here.”So, you know, we’re learning that on the fly as well so therefore our lines have been different that we’ve been bowling and we haven’t put enough balls in good areas really to create the pressure that we want and to take the wickets.”Lucknow, Delhi and Dharamsala have been the venues that have helped seam bowlers in this tournament, but Pakistan don’t have a single match there. The first match played in Kolkata, where Netherlands upset Bangladesh, will be cause for optimism as the Netherlands bowlers drew disconcerting bounce from the surface.Bradburn said the mood within the camp was great and there were no tensions among the players as reported. “The environment is great. There’s never any issue in terms of the environment. We have a wonderful group of players who are very determined to bring joy to their nation, play a quality, exciting brand of cricket for our fans and to make our country and our families proud of the performances that we put on the park. This is a very tight group and feel free to wander down towards the dressing room and watch the training today you will see a very good vibe.”

Para isso ocorrer, o time comandado por Renato Gaúcho precisa executar a sua lição de casa ao vencer os próximos dois jogos (Bahia e Náutico).

India and SA bank on franchise T20s for World Cup selection

Both Suryakumar and Markram said performances in the IPL and SA20 will be noted

Suryakumar: ‘There’s no fear of failure in the new-age Indian T20 batters’

India have just six T20Is left to identify their best XI before next year’s World Cup in the West Indies and USA, but Suryakumar Yadav, who is their captain for the three-match series in South Africa, isn’t too perturbed by the limited game time. Suryakumar added that IPL 2024, which will precede the T20 World Cup, will help India’s team management nail down their combination.”I feel there are limited T20s going forward, before the T20 World Cup, but then we play 14 league games in the IPL as well,” Suryakumar said on the eve of the series opener against South Africa in Durban. “And players who have been playing in these T20 internationals… they’ve played a lot of games, and they have a lot of experience under their belt. So, we don’t think there will be an issue or any problem in selecting the squad because everyone knows their roles really well and responsibilities really well – [like] how to play in different situations.”Like India, South Africa have only six T20Is lined up before the 2024 World Cup. In addition to having the advantage of playing three T20Is in the Caribbean in the lead-up to the marquee tournament, South Africa could pick players from the SA20, which will run from January 10 to February 10.Related

Ngidi ruled out of India T20Is with ankle sprain, also doubtful for Tests

“It’s a strange one,” their captain Aiden Markram said. “Not ideal that we have only six games [before the T20 World Cup] but we’re fortunate that there’s still a lot of T20 cricket, in terms of SA20 and the domestic T20 competition just after that. Hopefully, everyone can be fit and ready to go for us when it comes down to selecting the World Cup squad, which we will keep all our fingers crossed for. But guys will be playing T20 cricket and ultimately we will be able to get a good gauge of what our best squad is that we can send out for the World Cup.”For India, the spotlight is on their new finishers Rinku Singh and Jitesh Sharma. Both batters have lit up the IPL with their middle-order firepower and showed glimpses of that firepower in the recent T20Is at home against Australia. This tour presents an opportunity to strengthen their cases for selection for the T20 World Cup.”See, the number Rinku and Jitesh have been batting at, at the IPL and for their state teams, is the same number they are being given an opportunity here,” Suryakumar said, “And they are being told to do the same thing they do for their states and their franchises; [it’s] nothing different. That’s what they have done too; whenever we were in trouble in the T20 series [against Australia], they showed a lot of character, which was the demanded of the team. All I told them was that whatever you think, just think of the team first and then about your personal milestones. That will make the situation better.”Another area of potential concern for India is the absence of a reliable sixth-bowling option with Hardik Pandya out injured. India didn’t use the part-time spin of Yashasvi Jaiswal or Tilak Varma in the T20I series at home against Australia, but Suryakumar was pleased with the options at his disposal. Tilak bowled in five of the seven matches he had played for Hyderabad in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, India’s domestic T20 tournament.”We do have a sixth-bowling option,” Suryakumar said. “There are lots of people to bowl. When the time is right, you will see. Not just six, there could be seven or eight too.”None of the men in India’s current squad have played a T20I in South Africa, but Suryakumar backed them to adapt to the conditions. At Kingsmead, the venue for the first T20I, the square boundaries are fairly short, and the pitches are more conductive to seam bowlers than spinners.”I think the key to success playing on such wickets will be to be yourself,” Suryakumar said. “The boys are really prepared – we’ve just come out of a nice T20 series, and we played on all fast tracks in India and we’re really equipped for it. Regarding the strokes, the batters have batted on these kinds of wickets and I’m sure they will enjoy playing here in South Africa.”

Lancashire chairman: The Hundred becoming a T20 tournament 'makes sense'

Lancashire’s chairman believes that it would “make absolute sense” for the Hundred to become a T20 competition from 2025, as English cricket continues to debate the tournament’s future following top-level discussions over the prospect of opening it up to private investment. The ECB have been meeting with counties this month to discuss the Hundred’s future, following a successful third season for the tournament which saw record ticket sales and viewing figures. The eight teams are owned by the ECB and run by boards comprising county representatives and independent members, but could soon be opened up to private investors. The Hundred’s future is secure for at least five more seasons since it forms a significant part of the ECB’s TV rights deal with Sky Sports, which runs until the end of the 2028 season. But the ECB’s timeline for potential changes to the competition’s ownership structures would see a new model in place ahead of the 2025 edition. The reported last week that the ECB could give host counties equity stakes in their respective teams, and that they will consider adding two new clubs – most likely based in the south-west and the north-east – to create a greater geographical spread. The Hundred’s 100-ball format was hugely controversial at the point of inception, and was devised both to satisfy the desire of the BBC – who are its free-to-air broadcasters – for shorter games and to create a distinction with the Vitality Blast, the counties’ T20 tournament which has continued as England’s second-tier short-form competition. The format has largely proved popular with the players and has produced slightly shorter games than the Blast, but has not caught on around the world. Andy Anson, Lancashire’s chair, said on Wednesday that the Hundred no longer needs a unique format and should “fall in line” with franchise cricket by shifting to T20.”It would make absolute sense,” Anson told LancsTV, Lancashire’s in-house channel. “I think the format was an unnecessary creation. It was there to create a difference between the Blast and the Hundred… I think we are past that now. You won’t even need to change the branding of it: it could still be called the Hundred.”I think it should be T20, just to fall in line with this game that is brilliant. It is the best format of cricket from a global audience perspective. It does generate huge amounts of interest around the world…. I would just fall in line with it, and I do feel, in the meetings I’m in, that there is a sympathy for that attitude and for that change to happen.”The top salary in the men’s Hundred was £125,000 in 2023, which represented less money for more work than was on offer to leading overseas players in the inaugural season of Major League Cricket in the United States, where four of the six franchises are backed by IPL owners. To attract the world’s best, Anson believes that the Hundred would require private investment. “If you are going to make the Hundred the second-best tournament after the IPL, you probably need to improve the amount of money going into player wages to get the better players coming in,” he said.”Right now, we’ve got salary limits that mean the South African league [SA20] is paying more. The Middle Eastern league [ILT20] is certainly going to pay more, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the US league [MLC] pays more. And it [the Hundred] will drop down the pecking order, and we can’t let that happen actually, from a value perspective.”Bruce Carnegie-Brown, the chair of MCC, who are involved in the running of London Spirit, will consult with members next week to “discuss concepts… and seek a broad consensus” on the club’s attitude towards private investment in the Hundred.”At the moment the way forward is far from certain,” Carnegie-Brown – who announced this month he will not stand for re-election at the end of next season – told members in a recent email. “What we do know is that change is coming.”Anson said that Lancashire – who are the sole county involved in running Manchester Originals – will also consult members, and stressed that despite the club’s £30 million debt after investment in Emirates Old Trafford, they are “not in any urgent need of capital or cash… the debt is sustainable.”He said: “The opportunity that everyone is discussing is around the Hundred, and if the counties potentially have more ownership of the franchises in the Hundred… we have this discussion at the county chairs and CEOs meeting and I’d say the vast majority would like an injection of capital at some point in the near future.”
