Inglis and Couch back Tasmania into a corner

Josh Inglis continued his outstanding start to the Sheffield Shield season with another century before Western Australia’s attack tore into Tasmania late on day three at the WACA to close in on victory. After Inglis’ 101 helped WA to a 55-run first innings lead, recruit Brody Couch starred with three wickets to leave Tasmania in ruins at 135 for 9. There were echoes of last season’s final when Tasmania disintegrated late on day four, but they hung on before bad light ended play early. With a lead of just 80 runs, Tasmania are facing an inevitable defeat in a disappointment after they had restricted WA’s lead. But their fightback was short-lived after Couch removed opener Jake Weatherald in his first over.Much like during his impressive performance in Tasmania’s first innings, when he claimed 3 for 33 from 17 overs, Couch reached speeds of 142 kph and also picked up the wickets of Charlie Wakim and Brad Hope.Allrounder Aaron Hardie enjoyed his first wicket of the Shield season when he removed Jake Doran with a superb delivery that angled across and caught the edge of the left-hander’s bat.Having bowled just six overs in Tasmania’s first innings, Hardie is building up his bowling loads as he works his way back from a quad injury that ruled him out of the season opener against Queensland.Touted as a potential like-for-like replacement for injured Test allrounder Cameron Green, Hardie bowled lively short spells either side of tea to finish with 1 for 12 from six overs.Offspinner Corey Rocchiccioli chipped in with the late wickets of Mitch Owen and Kieran Elliott as WA gained a stranglehold over a match that had ebbed and flowed over the opening couple of days. The start of the day’s play was delayed by 45 minutes due to light showers in what might be the last drops of rain seen in Perth for several months with oppressive heat imminent.WA eyed a sizeable first-innings lead as allrounder Cooper Connolly rolled to his third half-century from his first five innings in First Class cricket. After a watchful start, Inglis rediscovered his supreme touch from late on day two and cruised to his century following on from a rapid ton against Queensland.Inglis is arguably the in-form batter in the country, but does not appear to be in the Test frame given incumbent wicketkeeper Alex Carey is firmly entrenched. Such is his commanding form, Inglis could become a bolter to play as a specialist batter. But he fell shortly after his ton when he nicked off to allrounder Beau Webster, who led Tasmania’s rally having in his previous over claimed Connolly for 55.There had been uncertainty over whether Hilton Cartwright would bat after he dashed out of the ground at tea on day two with his wife in labour. She gave birth to a boy in the wee hours of the morning, but Cartwright shrugged off undoubted exhaustion to continue on from his unbeaten 52 after getting permission from the match referee and Tasmania to resume his innings.Cartwright was understandably scratchy and added 13 runs until he holed out off quick Riley Meredith. WA’s bid for a big lead evaporated, but it appears they are still headed for a comfortable victory after another vintage effort from their outstanding attack.

The Netherlands were pushed hard in Lithuania to take three points in their quest for World Cup qualification and, once again, Depay was the man for the big occasion. The former Manchester United forward stepped up to fire home the winner after the hosts had pegged back his and Quinten Timber's earlier efforts. In doing so, Depay overtook Robin van Persie as his nation's all-time top scorer.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Van Persie amassed 50 goals for the Netherlands in 102 games, leading the likes of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (42), Patrick Kluivert (40), Dennis Bergkamp (37) and Arjen Robben (37) in the charts. Before today's game, Depay was level with Van Persie and knew just one goal would be enough to take him clear. On his 102nd appearance for the Oranje, Depay broke the record.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Depay now plays his football in Brazil. The Dutch forward, who was once considered a flop at Manchester United, went on to have a fine career at Lyon before earning moves to Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. After leaving Spain, he joined Corinthians, where he has scored 15 goals in 51 appearances to date.

    WHAT NEXT FOR DEPAY?

Depay will still be hoping to take his nation to the World Cup next summer. Even though he is playing his football outside of Europe, few in the Netherlands would be able to forget the role that the 31-year-old can play for Ronald Koeman's side – particularly now as the nation's highest ever scorer.

Leeds now in talks over deal for "elite" £30m striker with 21 G/A last season

Leeds United have now opened talks over a deal for an “elite” striker, who is also being targeted by West Ham United, according to a report.

Leeds eyeing new striker amid Bamford and Joseph uncertainty

Leeds have already made one addition at centre-forward this summer, securing the signing of former Wolfsburg man Lukas Nmecha on a free transfer, but it is looking increasingly likely they will have to bring in at least one more striker.

That is because there are major doubts over the futures of Patrick Bamford and Mateo Joseph, with the former admitting he would be open to a move to the MLS, saying: “I think it’s something that, obviously over time I’ve spoke to Michaela [his wife] about it, in terms of playing abroad, and America being one of the options.

“It was something that when I was younger I always wanted to do at some point in my career, to kind of experience it, experience a new country, the living the lifestyle there and also trying myself in a new league.”

Joseph, on the other hand, has a more pressing desire to leave, having decided not to take part in the Whites’ pre-season training camp, with Daniel Farke adding: “He came to me, and to us, and said he wants a new challenge and would like to have a move.”

With two strikers potentially heading for the exit door, Leeds have now set their sights on a replacement, and a report from Italy (via Leeds United News) has revealed they have opened talks over a deal for AS Roma’s Artem Dovbyk.

Despite being a regular source of goals for Roma last season, the Italian club are not overly convinced by the 28-year-old, and they could sanction a departure this summer, should a potential suitor be willing to fork out £30m.

West Ham are also in the race for Dovbyk, having submitted an enquiry alongside the Whites, so Farke’s side may have to fend off competition from their Premier League rivals.

"Elite" Dovbyk could be upgrade on Bamford and Joseph

In many ways, it is a surprise that Roma don’t have too many qualms about selling the centre-forward this summer, given that he enjoyed an impressive debut campaign in Italy, amassing a combined 21 goals and assists in all competitions.

Bamford, on the other hand, has been unable to put his injury problems in the rear-view mirror, while Joseph found the back of the net just three times in the Championship last season, indicating the Ukrainian striker could be a real upgrade.

Having also been lauded as a “fantastic finisher” and “elite target man” by journalist Zach Lowy, there are clear signs that Dovbyk could be capable of firing Leeds to safety next season, so they should undoubtedly pursue a deal if Roma are willing to sell.

Injury hits Maxwell's Shield hopes, leaves race for BBL

The allrounder picked up a hamstring strain in the final T20I against Pakistan

Finch: Shield cricket not a factor for Maxwell’s Test hopes

Glenn Maxwell’s hopes of making a return to first-class cricket before Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka have been scuppered by the hamstring injury he picked up against Pakistan in Hobart. Maxwell faces up to a month on the sidelines, which would rule him out of either of Victoria’s next two Sheffield Shield matches and leave a tight timeframe to be fit for the start of the BBL with Melbourne Stars.Maxwell limped off during Pakistan’s innings on Monday evening and has been diagnosed with a grade two hamstring injury. He had also been in the frame for the Prime Minister’s XI for the two-day pink-ball match against India in Canberra between the first and second Tests alongside potentially a Shield outing in one of Victoria’s two upcoming matches against Queensland.Related

Although missing those matches is not terminal to Maxwell’s hopes of returning to Test cricket in Sri Lanka they had been viewed as an opportunity to further prove he can withstand the rigours of four-day cricket following his badly broken leg in 2022. Last month he played his first red-ball game in over a year when he featured for Victoria’s Second XI against Queensland and was encouraged by a long stint in the field.Maxwell was left bitterly disappointed when he narrowly missed playing against Sri Lanka on the 2022 tour and adding to his seven caps remains a major ambition before his career finishes after he last featured in 2017.”I think if I gave up on that Test dream now, I don’t think I’d be doing justice to that younger Glenn Maxwell who was dying to put on the baggy green when he was a kid,” Maxwell told ESPNcricinfo last month. “And I think while there’s still a glimmer of hope, I’ll keep going for it.”Glenn Maxwell is unlikely to play again before the BBL•Getty ImagesFormer Australia captain Aaron Finch does not believe the latest injury will change whether Maxwell is selected for Sri Lanka or not.”Don’t think it makes any difference,” Finch told ESPN’s . “The very little red-ball cricket Maxi’s played over the last probably five years, if they want to pick him, they’ll pick him regardless, and it’s not about if he goes and gets runs in Shield cricket. I don’t think that comes into it at all because it’s the skillset he has got – he’s very good against spin, he’s very versatile, [and] his offspin is better than part-time.”Chair of selectors George Bailey has previously said they will make specialist picks for Sri Lanka, and that performances in Shield cricket would not be the overriding factor given the vast differences in the conditions, while head coach Andrew McDonald confirmed Maxwell was firmly in the mix.”The ability to play on that horizontal plane sweeping and reverse sweeping, I think will be a critical skill if the conditions are extreme,” McDonald said. “Does he [Maxwell] fit that profile? 100 percent he fits that profile.”The big challenge for Maxi is clearly body and whether he can get through Test cricket, and what that may look like on the back of BBL. With Maxi, it’s he plays, see how he pulls up and then make the next decision on the back of that injury that he had.”The first Test in Sri Lanka starts on January 29 with Australia expected to have a 10-day lead up meaning those selected for the tour will miss the BBL finals and potentially the late regular-season games.Melbourne Stars’ first BBL match is the opening game of the tournament against Perth Scorchers on December 15.

£130k-a-week striker "open" to joining Newcastle after string of rejections

A “terrific” Premier League player is “open to leaving” his current club to potentially join Newcastle United during the summer transfer window, according to former scout Mick Brown.

Newcastle targeting potential Isak replacements

The Alexander Isak saga continues to rumble on this summer, with Eddie Howe claiming that no club has come in and made an offer for him so far.

“He is still our player. He’s contracted to us. We, to a degree, control what is next for him. I would love to believe all possibilities are still available to us. My wish is that he stays, but that’s not in my full control. We have not received a formal offer for Alex, from any club.”

Newcastle continue to be linked with possible replacements, with former Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic mentioned as a surprise option who could return to Tyneside following a string of rejections from their top targets this summer.

RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko and Brentford’s Yoane Wissa are also leading options to move to the Magpies, but the former may be left to choose between St James’ Park and Old Trafford amid interest from Manchester United.

Watkins "open to leaving" Aston Villa

Speaking to Football Insider, Brown, a long-time scout for Villa before retiring for punditry, claimed that Newcastle target striker Ollie Watkins is “open to leaving” Aston Villa this summer, possibly paving the way for a move to St James’ Park.

“Man United have been looking at him as well, and now Newcastle are interested. I’m told it’s something Villa are going to be open to, and I think Watkins is open to leaving too. If clubs come in for him, he’s going to want to explore his options. Newcastle are preparing to lose Isak, so they’ve been looking at a lot of different players who could potentially come in and plug the gap he’s going to leave.

“Watkins is certainly on that list because he’s a top player and would be great for Newcastle. I was really pushing for Villa to sign him when I was there because he was the best option available to us, and eventually they went and got it done. Now he’s got Premier League and international experience, which make him ideal for Newcastle. It’s difficult to say what they’re going to do because they’ve missed out on so many players, but he is certainly one of the ones they’ve looked at.”

Aston Villa's OllieWatkinscelebrates

At 29, the £130,000-a-week Watkins isn’t getting any younger, but if Newcastle could sign both him and a younger option like Sesko, it could be great replacement business for Isak.

The Villa ace has now proven himself at the top level for a long time, scoring 75 goals in 184 Premier League appearances, as well as being lauded by Danny Murphy.

The fact that Watkins is happy to leave Villa is a big boost for Newcastle, and there should be no issues with him coming straight in and hitting the ground running at St James’.

'A great start' – Eddie Howe delighted with Nick Woltemade's goalscoring debut after landing striker to replace £125m man Alexander Isak

Eddie Howe was delighted with Nick Woltemade's goalscoring debut after landing the striker to replace Alexander Isak. Handed the impossible task of stepping into the void left by £125 million ($170m) Isak, the 23-year-old German silenced any doubters with a thunderous debut goal in front of a raucous St James’ Park crowd.

From Isak’s shadow to instant hero

The £69m recruit rose high in the 29th minute to crash home a header from Jacob Murphy’s teasing cross, a strike that sealed a precious 1-0 win and lifted the Magpies to their first victory of the campaign. The Toon Army, all 52,145 of them, erupted as Woltemade wheeled away in celebration. Chants of his name echoed around the stadium as fans sensed they were witnessing the birth of a new talisman after losing Isak to Liverpool.

After the final whistle, Howe could barely hide his delight.

"It was a great moment for Nick," he said. "I was very pleased with how he played today. You saw his qualities, his technical qualities that we've been discussing and his intelligence but most importantly for a striker, when the ball comes into the box, you need to be there and he was.

"It was a great finish. I'm really pleased for him personally because that just settles him down and relaxes him, he's a very humble guy, he wants to do well and he's delighted to be here — I think it's a great start."

Tonali the midfield heartbeat

If Woltemade provided the fireworks, Sandro Tonali delivered the hard graft. The Italian midfielder was tireless in the middle of the park, constantly snapping into tackles, recycling possession, and driving his side forward. On a day when Newcastle’s attack often misfired, Tonali’s engine and authority gave Howe’s side the backbone they needed to grind out the result.

Frank offered Man City forward as Tottenham tempted by "interesting" deal

Tottenham manager Thomas Frank is in need of more attacking options ahead of his first full season in charge, and he could now be handed an opportunity to welcome a Man City star to N17.

Lilywhites legend Son Heung-min officially completed a move to LAFC earlier this week, bringing an end to his glittering 10-year spell at Spurs.

The 33-year-old captained the side for one final time on his home soil in their pre-season clash against Newcastle last Sunday, with fans in Seoul treated to an emotional farewell from one of the country’s greatest-ever players.

It was a moment packed with emotion. A lap of honour, a stadium singing his name, but the reality is clear – Tottenham must now face life without their talisman.

Son’s departure to the MLS is a landmark moment for him personally, but for Spurs, Frank must now cope without both a leader behind-the-scenes and a devastating forward on his day.

The winger’s 173 goals in 454 appearances will take some replacing, and to add insult to injury, Tottenham are poised to be without playmaker James Maddison for a large portion of the campaign.

Maddison was stretched off against Newcastle last weekend, suffering an injury to the same knee which kept him out at the end of last season. Scans have since confirmed the worst – a ruptured ACL. He’s now set to undergo surgery and miss the majority of 25/26.

FFC Spurs – James Maddison

It’s a massive setback for Frank, who had seemingly planned to build his attack around the England international. Maddison was one of the side’s standout performers last term when fit and available, and without him, Spurs are desperately short of creativity in midfield.

The club is now expected to accelerate plans to sign an attacking midfielder before the window closes, with Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott among Spurs’ potential No.10 targets.

Tottenham offered chance to sign Man City forward Savinho

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, writing for TBR Football, Man City forward Savinho has been put forward to the weakened north Londoners by agents.

The Brazil international, who can operate on both flanks, also played as a CAM at sporadic points last season – namely against Salford City in the FA Cup and in City’s shock Club World Cup defeat to Al-Hilal.

Tottenham have been offered Savinho by intermediaries, as per Bailey, and it’s an “interesting” opportunity that they could be tempted by.

“Savinho has come up in conversations and put to Tottenham,” said the reporter.

“At this point, it is not envisaged that Savinho would leave City, but he is a player that Spurs have liked, if he became available, could be an interesting option.”

The 21-year-old only joined Pep Guardiola’s side last summer, bagging 13 assists in all competitions – two more than Maddison managed last term.

He was in and out of the starting eleven towards the end of the 24/25 Premier League season, and Savinho would be guaranteed more game time at Tottenham in the aftermath of their attacking shortage, so this could be one to keep an eye on.
