Newcastle eye Palmeiras star with €100m release clause as January transfer window looms

Newcastle are eyeing Palmeiras star Allan Elias, who has a €100 million (£87.5m/$117m) release clause as the January transfer window looms. The Magpies have stepped up their interest with reports in Brazil claiming the Premier League side are pushing for an "immediate" agreement.

Magpies plot ambitious move for Brazil’s Elias

According to , Palmeiras have outlined a plan to generate €70m (£61m/$82m) from new player sales in 2026. The club will count only fresh transactions, excluding any instalments from past deals, and view Allan as a prime candidate to command a major transfer fee. Having developed into Abel Ferreira’s go-to "utility player", featuring across multiple positions and delivering decisive moments in crucial matches, the youngster is now counted among the club’s most valuable assets.

Newcastle, aware of Palmeiras’ willingness to negotiate, are said to be ready to make a significant investment. The Palmeiras hierarchy admits that no player is considered "untouchable" for the 2026 season. Should a suitable proposal arrive, Allianz Parque officials are prepared to sanction a sale that supports their revenue objectives. Palmeiras have already turned down a €20m (£17m/$23m) bid from Zenit and expect future offers to approach at least €32m (£28m/$37m). While Allan’s release clause gives the club substantial leverage, their urgent financial targets increase the likelihood of movement in 2026 if negotiations progress. And the midfielder’s situation is being monitored closely in England, where Newcastle have been tracking him as part of their long-term squad rebuild.

If Allan does depart, it would follow a growing pattern of record-breaking sales by Palmeiras in recent years. Their academy pipeline has become one of the most profitable in world football, producing talents snapped up by Europe’s biggest names. Endrick’s monumental €72m (£63m/$84m) switch to Real Madrid in 2022 set a new bar for Brazilian exports. That was followed by Estevão’s €61.5m (£54m/$72m) move to Chelsea, Luis Guilherme’s €23m (£20m/$27m) transfer to West Ham, and the most recent agreement for teenage defender Vitor Reis, whose €37m (£33m/$43m) package, €35m (£31m/$41m) of which goes directly to Palmeiras, further swelled the club’s coffers. Against this backdrop, Allan stands out as the next likely high-value departure. With the January window looming and Palmeiras openly embracing negotiations as part of their long-term financial planning, Newcastle’s interest comes at precisely the right moment.

Frattesi back on the agenda as Newcastle weigh midfield options

In parallel with their pursuit of Elias, Newcastle are also keeping a close eye on Inter Milan’s Davide Frattesi. The Italian midfielder, who was strongly linked with the Magpies last summer, has seen his playing time shrink dramatically under new manager Cristian Chivu. reported that Newcastle were keen to sign the 26-year-old during the last transfer window, only for Inter to block the move following Simone Inzaghi’s departure. But with Frattesi logging fewer than 200 minutes in Serie A this season, a January move is now considered "very likely,” according to

Getty Images SportFinancial realities cast doubt on mega-deals

Eddie Howe has repeatedly expressed his desire to expand his midfield options, particularly after injuries to Joe Willock and Lewis Miley disrupted Newcastle’s rhythm earlier in the campaign. The Magpies eventually secured Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa, but Howe made no secret of his concern that the squad were operating with fewer central midfielders than he wanted. Despite their interest in Allan, Howe has sought to temper expectations about Newcastle making extravagant purchases in January as the club remain tightly constrained by the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

At the time, he said: "We want six [midfielders] and now we are down to four. That is an issue for us and it is a position we are looking at."

"Certainly paying fees like that (£100 million), and I am not sure we are going to be in a position to do that. I am talking about that without any knowledge on January. It is just not really a window that big fees are usually paid. There is always a long-term management of PSR and long-term management on our financial situation. We can’t let one transfer unbalance that."

Newcastle currently sit 12th in the Premier League and face Burnley on Saturday.

Darren Lehmann lures Nathan McSweeney to Northants in statement signing

Northamptonshire coach Darren Lehmann has made a statement signing by luring Australia’s Nathan McSweeney to Wantage Road for the 2026 season. The deal covers all formats and the club expect McSweeney to be available “for the whole season” barring an international recall.Lehmann joined Northants last summer and took them to T20 Blast Finals Day for the first time since 2016, though they finished second-bottom of Division Two in the County Championship and won only once in the One-Day Cup. He signed an extension mid-season which means his contract now runs until the end of 2027, and has started to strengthen his squad for next year.Lehmann was an assistant coach when McSweeney captained Brisbane Heat to the BBL title in 2023-24, and presented him with his baggy green cap when he made his Test debut against India last year. McSweeney was harshly dropped after only three caps – four of his five dismissals were to an in-form Jasprit Bumrah – but has not featured for Australia since.McSweeney previously worked with Lehmann at Brisbane Heat•Cricket Australia via Getty Images

As a result, he should be available throughout the English summer. He will play alongside his South Australia team-mate Harry Conway for the first half of the Championship season, with Yuzvendra Chahal set to take over from Conway for the second half of the Championship and the One-Day Cup. Allrounder Louis Kimber has also joined from Leicestershire.”When the chance came up to sign with Northamptonshire, it was an easy decision,” McSweeney said. “The club has a strong culture and some quality players, and working with Boof again made it even more appealing. I’m eager to get over there, settle in, and help the team win games.”Lehmann said: “Nathan McSweeney is a brilliant player who has so much talent and potential. He’s a classy individual who will hopefully provide us with some stability in that top order. We can’t wait for him to arrive and hit the ground running.”

Tasmania down WA to extend silky start to One-Day Cup

Sam Fanning and debutant Teague Wyllie both made half-centuries but the home side chases the target with room to spare

AAP20-Oct-2025Tasmania’s perfect start to the One-Day Cup continued with stalwart Jordan Silk top-scored in a four-wicket win against Western Australia. In a Bellerive Oval fixture restricted by rain to a maximum of 44 overs each, WA posted 248 for 9 with Sam Fanning top-scoring with 66 from 91 balls.Tasmania, set 252 runs to win under the DLS system, lost six wickets and reached their target from 38 overs to win with 36 balls to spare.Silk dominated with 81 from 75 deliveries, scoring his 2000th domestic one-day run in the process of Tasmania banking a fourth win from as many outings.Silk, who struck nine fours and a six, and a batch of experienced team-mates were untroubled in the run chase. He combined with fellow veteran Matthew Wade (46 not out from 43 balls) in a defining 104-run partnership for the fifth wicket.Opener Caleb Jewell set the Tasmanian tone with an aggressive 48 from 37 balls featuring seven fours, and evergreen Ben McDermott made 42 from 49 deliveries. The quartet overpowered WA’s bowling attack with paceman Mahli Beardman the sole multiple wicket-taker.Earlier, WA opener Fanning’s composed knock and an aggressive 56 from 51 balls from one-day debutant Teague Wyllie underpinned the visitor’s total.Fanning and fellow opener Joel Curtis put on 50 runs in eight overs amid early rain interruptions. Curtis, Cameron Bancroft and Sam Whiteman all failed to capitalise on promising starts and when Fanning fell in the 29th over, the visitors were 147 for 4.Allrounders Hilton Cartwright and Ashton Agar were both dismissed in the following 10 overs as Wylie launched at Tasmania’s bowlers. The 21-year-old struck four fours and a six before edging to wicketkeeper McDermott from the bowling of Brad Hope, who impressed with 3 for 40 from seven overs.

Carragher compared him to John Terry: Chelsea must sell £80k-per-week flop

Chelsea’s transfer strategy over the last few seasons has seen them sign plenty of hugely talented players.

The likes of Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo, Estevao and Marc Cucurella, for example, are some of the most exciting in the Premier League.

However, the Blues have also signed more than their fair share of flops, some of whom still need to be moved on as soon as possible.

This includes an international centre-back who was once compared to John Terry.

The worst centre-backs signed under Todd Boehly

While Chelsea have made at least one poor signing in practically every position since Todd Boehly and Co took charge, they seem to have had particular bad luck at centre-back.

First Impressions

What did pundits and fans alike think about their new star signing when they arrived? Football FanCast’s ‘First Impressions’ series has everything you need.

For example, ranking as one of the worst signings the club have made over the last few years is Senegalese defender Kalidou Koulibaly.

The Blues paid Napoli around £33m for the then-highly rated and vastly experienced defender in 2022, and to their credit, it seemed like a good signing at the time.

After all, the monster centre-back was long seen as one of the best in his position in Europe, but it quickly became apparent that the West Londoners had picked him up a few years too late.

He was slow on and off the ball, prone to mistakes, and simply looked out of place in the Premier League, and was sold to Saudi Pro-League side Al-Hilal after just one year.

Another defender who has failed to live up to expectations at Stamford Bridge, or even get close to them, is Benoit Badiashile.

The former AS Monaco gem joined the Blues in January 2023 for a fee of around £35m, and at the time, fans thought the club had just secured one of the best up-and-coming defenders in French football.

After all, he made his debut for the Ligue 1 side at just 17 years old, and by the time Chelsea came knocking, he had already amassed an impressive tally of 135 appearances for them.

Standing 6 foot 4 inches tall and described as the “complete centre-back” by talent scout Jacek Kulig for his speed, power and ability on the ball, it seemed like he would be a hit.

Unfortunately, while he wasn’t as bad as Koulibaly, he has still made far too many mistakes and was limited to just 16 starts across all competitions last season.

There might be a way back for the Frenchman now he’s fit again, but the same cannot be said for one of his teammates, who was once compared to the iconic John Terry.

The Chelsea player compared to John Terry

One of the members of Chelsea’s ‘bomb squad,’ Maresca and Co. need to get rid of Axel Disasi as soon as possible, for his benefit as much as the club’s.

It’s hard to imagine it now, but when the 27-year-old centre-back first joined the Blues, in the summer of 2023, there was a fair deal of excitement from fans and pundits alike.

After all, here was a French international who had made a brief appearance in the World Cup final the winter before and someone who was one of the most exciting defenders in Ligue 1.

In fact, just a few years before his move to Stamford Bridge, talent scout Jacek Kulig compared him to Virgil van Dijk and described him as “a true hidden gem” who was “born to play in England.”

The Gonesse-born titan’s time in West London couldn’t have got off to a better start, either, as on his debut, he scored a header to earn his side a point against Liverpool.

Unfortunately, over the following months, he would begin to struggle with the quality of the league, but then-boss Mauricio Pochettino kept him in the team, and away to Manchester City in February, he got his rewards.

The former AS Monaco ace was sensational against the champions, and according to Jamie Carragher, his “John Terry performance” was the reason the Blues left the Etihad with a point.

That is just about the highest praise a Chelsea defender can get, and unfortunately, he has not performed anywhere close to that level since.

The following season saw him stay at Stamford Bridge for the first half, but he was sent on loan to Aston Villa for the second half, where he made ten appearances and failed to stamp his authority on the backline.

Things have gotten even worse this year, as, at the time of writing, the only appearance he has made was for the club’s U21S against Reading’s U21S last week.

Unfortunately, it is clear that Maresca has no intention of even including Disasi in his squad this season, so considering he’s earning £80k-per-week, and for his own sake, Chelsea should look to sell him as soon as possible.

Real Madrid legend explains why La Liga won't review controversial Vinicius Jr collision that left Inaki Pena bleeding as Jude Bellingham netted late equaliser against Elche

Real Madrid’s 2-2 draw at Elche sparked fresh controversy after Vinicius Jr collided with goalkeeper Inaki Pena in the build up to Jude Bellingham’s late equaliser. Elche protested fiercely as Peña was left bleeding, but La Liga’s "Review Time" panel will not re-examine the incident and former Madrid star Fernando Morientes, an member of the panel, has explained why.

  • Madrid rescue point amid protests as Elche rage over Vinicius collision

Los Blancos were forced to settle for a frustrating 2-2 draw against Elche, extending their winless run to three matches in all competitions. After falling behind twice to goals from Aleix Febas and Alvaro Rodriguez, Madrid salvaged a point when Bellingham struck in the 87th minute. But the equaliser triggered furious protests from the home side. In the build up, Vinicius collided with goalkeeper Pena, leaving the Elche goalkeeper bleeding from the nose. Despite strong protests and VAR checks, the goal stood.

Elche manager Eder Sarabia was livid afterward, insisting the challenge should have been given as a foul, saying: “It’s a clear foul. Not a normal part of the game. That’s what VAR is for. It’s a very clear foul; it hits the goalkeeper and even draws blood. It’s crystal clear.”

He doubled down in his post-match remarks: “I’m not at all happy with the result, especially considering the decisive moments of the match. Vinicius’s foul for the 2-2 equalizer was crystal clear. Inaki didn’t see the play, but it wasn’t just a normal part of the game, it was a clear foul. It makes me angry to waste time on these things.” His anger set the stage for a fresh refereeing debate and all eyes turned to the Spanish Football Federation's (RFEF) new “Review Time” system.

Real Madrid legend explains why the play won’t be reviewed

On , former Madrid striker Morientes, a member of the advisory group that selects which incidents are reviewed, revealed why the collision will not be included.

Before delivering the verdict, he clarified that the panel had already agreed unanimously on which plays to review this week: “There were already some plays that we had unanimously chosen and this one comes in the last game and almost in the last minutes of the game and unanimously we all think it was a totally fortuitous play, not just me,” Morientes said. “I have already shown that I don't care that he is from Madrid.”

He insisted the contact looked accidental: “Live, it seemed totally accidental to me, a play between a striker and a goalkeeper.”

Morientes then gave a striker’s perspective from experience: "I put myself a little in the striker's shoes, which I've experienced 50,000 times, I mean, 50,000 times I've had to bleed from contact with the opponent's head, elbow, shoulder… and the goalkeeper, unfortunately, many more times because he usually goes low and in those kinds of situations."

  • Pena changes his stance after seeing the replay

While the incident was dismissed as “fortuitous” by the Review Time committee, Pena offered a different view after seeing the footage inside the dressing room.

He revised his initial pitch-side comments and expressed frustration with what he saw on video: “He shoots, tries to go for the rebound, but on the second play he doesn't let me participate because he knocks me out. For me, it is a foul, but if the referee goes to VAR and says it's not a foul, there's nothing we can do.”

His shift in tone reflected a deeper anger in the Elche camp, who felt they had earned more than a single point after leading the match twice. For them, it was another example of a decisive moment where decisions went Madrid’s way – a narrative that has shaped much of the wider debate around officiating in Spain this season.

Madrid look to reset ahead of key fixtures

Madrid now turn their attention to the Champions League, where they face Olympiacos in Athens on Wednesday. A win would help restore momentum and strengthen their group position after a difficult domestic run. After returning from Europe, Madrid play Girona, currently 18th at the Estadi Montilivi as they push to steady their La Liga form. Despite recent setbacks, they remain top of the league with 32 points, just one point ahead of Barcelona.

Xabi Alonso has urged his squad to raise their intensity and return to the standards that defined their strong start to the campaign. All eyes will now be on whether Los Blancos can convert that message into results and move past another heated refereeing flashpoint.

Mitchell Hay has been called in to the squad as Seifert’s replacement and joined the team on Monday night.Seifert retired hurt after being hit on the finger while batting for Northern Districts in Monday’s Ford Trophy match against Wellington Firebirds, and a subsequent X-ray revealed a fracture to the right index finger.”We’re all feeling for Tim,” Rob Walter, New Zealand’s head coach, said in a statement. “He’s a key member of this T20 unit given his power at the top of the order and his role as keeper, so he’ll be missed over the next five matches.NZ vs WI, T20I series

Bryce Harper Back in Phillies' Lineup After Injury-Related Absence

After a brief injury scare, Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper is back.

Harper will bat third for the Phillies Tuesday evening against the Toronto Blue Jays, Philadelphia announced Tuesday afternoon. The two-time National League MVP had not played since being hit on the right elbow by a pitch against the Atlanta Braves on May 27.

X-rays came back negative, but Phillies manager told reporters Harper's elbow was "really bruised" in the immediate aftermath.

Harper, 32, is slashing .267/.375/.450 with eight home runs and 33 RBIs in 54 games this season—numbers in line with the rest of his rock-solid Philadelphia tenure. He was, however, coming off a 2-for-13 series against the Athletics when Braves pitcher Spencer Strider plunked him.

The Phillies are currently 36–23—second in the National League East division, and a game and a half behind the first-place New York Mets. Philadelphia will play three games each against the Blue Jays and Pittsburgh Pirates before a seismic home showdown with the Chicago Cubs.

Injured Grounds Crew Member at Giants-Tigers Did Not Like Being on Camera

A somber moment took place during the San Francisco Giants-Detroit Tigers game on Wednesday afternoon after a member of the Tigers' grounds crew at Comerica Park suddenly went down due to injury.

In between innings, the grounds crew member collapsed on the field due to what appeared to be a non-contact knee injury and was swiftly attended to by a medical trainer.

As the grounds crew member sat on the base paths swarmed by concerned onlookers from both teams, the cameras zoomed in on him to get a better look at the situation.

He didn't appreciate that, and after the cameras focused on him a second time, he shamelessly flipped the bird on live television (wait until the end of the video):

Oof. Not the best idea to do that on-air.

After a brief delay, the Tigers went on to win, 4-3. Prayers up for the injured grounds crew member—hopefully, he recovers from his injury soon and still has his job afterward.
