Rangers could land dream 1st Rohl deal by signing the new Ryan Kent

Glasgow Rangers attacking midfielder Thelo Aasgaard scored his second goal for the club in all competitions when he found the back of the net against Motherwell on Saturday.

The Norway international has failed to deliver consistent quality at the top end of the pitch in the Scottish Premiership, with two goals and two assists, since his move from Luton in the summer.

Aasgaard is simply one of a number of players who have been unable to hit the ground running at Ibrox this season, though, and that has left Danny Rohl in need of reinforcements next month.

Why Rangers need to sign a new winger

The German head coach needs to bring in another option out wide when the January transfer window opens for business, because his current options have not offered enough in the final third.

As you can see in the table above, none of the manager’s current wingers have scored more than two goals or provided more than two assists in the Scottish Premiership this season.

These statistics show that Rangers need more quality in that department because they have not had a consistent source of goals or assists on the right or the left wing in the league under Russell Martin or Rohl.

The Light Blues are still looking for their next version of Ryan Kent, who scored 12 goals and provided 11 assists in the 2020/21 campaign, per Sofascore, when Rangers last won the Premiership.

There is a reported Gers transfer target, though, ahead of the January window who could arrive at Ibrox as Rohl’s own version of the English forward.

The Rangers target who could be their next Ryan Kent

Last month, it was reported that Rangers are one of a number of clubs interested in a deal to sign Trencin winger Sani Suleiman ahead of the January and summer transfer windows in 2026.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

At the same time, it was claimed that Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, and Bayer Leverkusen also want to sign the 19-year-old forward, whilst Paris Saint-Germain, Ajax, and Brentford have also been reported as possible suitors for the teenage starlet.

There is clearly big competition to land his services, as the likes of PSG and Chelsea want to sign him, but Rangers must push to win the race for his signature, because he could be their next Ryan Kent.

The Light Blues have fallen on the wrong side of deals like this in the past. For example, they were reportedly leading the race to sign Xavi Simons on a free transfer from PSG in 2022, only for PSV to eventually land him. He joined Spurs for £52m from RB Leipzig in the summer.

That is why Rangers must push extra hard to convince Suleiman that a move to Ibrox is the best next step for him in his career, as a stepping stone before he is ready to play for a team like PSG or Chelsea in the future.

As you can see in the table above, the 19-year-old star has already been directly involved in five goals in eight starts in the Slovakian top-flight so far this season.

Whilst some supporters may question how the Slovakian league compares to the Scottish Premiership, Suleiman’s performances have been good enough to warrant interest from Chelsea, Spurs, and PSG, which speaks to the quality of his displays.

Writer and analyst Bence Bocsak described him as “one of the best wingers playing outside of Europe’s top five leagues this season” because he has been “dominating defenders with his directness”, citing a dribble success rate of 71% this season.

A direct right-footed left winger who can dribble, score goals, and create goals? That sounds familiar. Suleiman, at 19, could arrive at Rangers with the potential to be their next big talent on the flank, as Kent once was.

The Nigerian talent has already scored more league goals (three) than any Rangers winger has managed this season (three), and his haul of two assists equals anything any Gers winger has produced.

This suggests that he could make an immediate impact at Ibrox as their most productive winger if he can hit the ground running in Scottish football, whilst also having the potential to develop into a Kent-like figure for the Scottish giants in the future, at the age of just 19.

The new Morelos: Rangers "myth" has seen his value plummet by £12m

Therefore, Rangers must push hard to win the race for Suleiman’s signature because he could be their next Kent, and avenge the deal they once missed out on with Xavi Simons.

Italy, Isle of Man keep winning on day of hat-tricks

It was a day of hat-tricks in Isle of Man, as two bowlers picked three in three, while Italy and the hosts completed their third consecutive wins to stay on top of their respective group.Italy’s batsmen struggled to get going in Tromode and sputtered to 146 for 9 in their 40 overs. Tail-enders Atikur Rehman and Mohammad Adnan struck crucial 20s to lift their side from a troublesome 50 for 6 as Gibraltar’s bowlers shared the wickets around. Gibraltar were then blown away by Adnan and Abdur Bhuiyan, with the latter removing Jeremy Perez, Simon Dumas and Dylan Casciaro off successive balls. Gibraltar were eventually shot out for 52 in the 29th over.Rowan Bird’s patient 50 off 80 balls held Isle of Man’s innings together in St John’s as they made 165 for 6 in 40 overs. Spain’s reply was scuppered by an all-round bowling effort from the hosts, led by Sebastian Aycock’s 3 for 20.Midhun Sandhya produced the best individual performance of the tournament so far when he took four wickets, including a hat-trick, and followed it up with an undefeated 68 as Switzerland trounced Austria by six wickets in Castletown. Sandhya’s effort was supported well by George Gaillet as Austria folded for 113. Switzerland’s reply was rocked early as the openers could manage just one run between them, but Sandhya came to their rescue again.France blew away Greece en route the quickest finish of the tournament in a match that lasted under 30 overs in Crosby. Zain Zahir picked 5 for 11 as Greece were bowled out for 49 in the 18th over. France lost a couple of wickets but had no problems in sealing the match in the 12th over of the chase.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Saturday shifted the training and fitness camp for the national squad from Quetta to Lahore because of recent floods in Balochistan, a PCB official said.Zakir Khan, PCB’s director of cricket operations, said that the camp – the second of the three camps organised to improve the players’ fitness levels – had to be relocated keeping in view the current situation in Balochistan where floods have left scores of people dead and thousands homeless. The camp was scheduled from July 10 to July 23.Instead, the 22 players called up for the camp would now head to Lahore. The camp’s duration and dates have remained unchanged. The first camp took place in Abbottabad where the players were supervised by army trainers. The third and final camp is scheduled to take place in the coastal city of Karachi from July 25.

Sri Lanka have strengthened their pace attack for the ODI series against England by calling up Dilhara Fernando and Ruchira Perera into a 14-man squad. The five-match series begins at Lord’s on June 17. The two replace Nuwan Zoysa and Nuwan Kulasekera in the squad.Perera, who did well during the series against Australia and South Africa earlier in the year, returns after being sidelined with a hamstring injury. He was reported for an illegal action during the 2002 tour to England. Fernando is back after being given time to work on a no-balling problem that has plagued him, most recently in the Test series against Pakistan in April. He will add some pace to the attack, given his status as arguably the fastest bowler in the country. He also has a good one-day record against England, having taken 15 wickets in six games at a cost of only 19 runs each.Russel Arnold, now considered a one-day specialist, has also been drafted into the squad. Thilan Samaraweera, Jehan Mubarak and Michael Vandort all return home after the Test series which ended 1-1.England have delayed announcing their squad until later this week because of Andrew Flintoff’s injured ankle.Squad: Mahela Jayawardene (captain), Kumar Sangakkara (wk), Muttiah Muralitharan, Sanath Jayasuriya, Upul Tharanga, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Chamara Kapugedera, Russel Arnold, Farveez Maharoof, Chaminda Vaas, Lasith Malinga, Dilhara Fernando, Ruchira Perera, Malinga Bandara.

Tillakaratne Dilshan has been dropped from the Sri Lankan Test squad for the series against Pakistan, starting at Faisalabad on October 20. Dilshan is one of the five players who have been replaced from the one-day team, which is currently taking part in the tri-nation PakTel series. The others who will return after the tri-series final are Avishka Gunawardena, Saman Jayantha, Nuwan Zoysa and Kaushal Lokuarachchi. Dilshan was having a tough time with the bat in Sri Lanka’s recent series against Australia and South Africa. After his 104 against Australia at Galle in March this year, Dilshan has crossed 40 just once in 14 innings. As exclusively reported in the on Wednesday, the five players who were chosen as replacements were: Thilan Samaraweera, Jehan Mubarak and Ian Daniel, Lasith Malinga, and Romesh Kaluwitharana, the wicketkeeper.Sri Lanka will take on Pakistan in a day-night encounter on Thursday before the same two teams clash for the title on October 16 at Lahore.

Zimbabwe could be stripped of Test status

There is every likelihood that Australia will push for Zimbabwe to be stripped of Test status when the International Cricket Council meets next month. Addressing a news conference on Saturday, James Sutherland, the chief executive of Cricket Australia, said, “It’s over a month away right now and that gives the Zimbabwe Cricket Union a chance to resolve some of their differences with their players. I think that [the Test status of Zimbabwe] is a question that has probably come on to the table and is higher on the agenda now than it has ever been before.”Sutherland said that a decision would be taken in June, but he admitted that Australia, and several other Test-playing nations, were concerned about the current impasse between players and administrators in Zimbabwe. The two-Test series between Zimbabwe and Australia was cancelled on Friday, just 24 hours before the first match was due to start. And given Australia’s crowded itinerary, it’s unlikely to be played for at least another four years. The two teams will now play three one-day internationals in Harare, though once again, the rebel players have not been considered for selection.”One can’t predict but one would assume that a Zimbabwe 2nd or 3rd XI playing against the best team in the world would not have been a pretty contest,” said Sutherland. “It’s well known that the ICC have commenced a review of the structure of international cricket. There are certainly concerns about the standard of their team at the moment and that’s something the ICC will address at their June meeting.”

New milestone for McGrath as he keeps Australia in charge

England’s fighting spirit was frayed by another class performance from theAustralians, spearheaded by Glenn McGrath who captured his 350th Test wicket.By the close of an entertaining third day, cut short by rain and bad light, the tourists were 207 runs ahead with nine wickets still in tact.Michael Slater was England’s only second innings success, after Darren Goughforced him to play on having reached 16 and Ricky Ponting had anotherescape, for the second time in the match, when he was dropped by MikeAtherton on four.A capacity Headingley crowd were kept spellbound by the action and drama provided throughout the day, with Alec Stewart playing a whirlwind innings down the order and McGrath reaching his milestone to become the third Australian in history to take 350 wickets.A sense of theatre was created with the dismissal of England captain NasserHussain, just 11 minutes into play. After his valiant effort on the secondday’s play, he was cornered by a ball from McGrath that kept low and nippedback to hit him on the pad.He had added a single to his overnight total but his departure came as amajor blow for England after he and Mark Butcher had raised hopes with astand of 91 that promised a serious and hefty response to Australia’s firstinnings total of 447.Butcher went nine balls later, calling for an impossible single and fallingfour feet short when Brett Lee broke the wicket. He made 47 but the prospectof another England collapse looked likely with the score 158 for four, twonew batsmen at the crease and the follow-on target still 90 runs off.Mark Ramprakash produced one of the highlights of the day by reacting to apainful blow on the wrist from Jason Gillespie with a powerful punch throughthe covers for four, to the great delight of a supportive crowd. When Australia took the new ball, he had reached 40 and looked settled andconfident but his innings was brought to a premature end when he edgedMcGrath to the wicket-keeper, Gilchrist taking it in front of his nose.Meanwhile, Stewart was starting to gain momentum, showing his habitual likingfor the new ball despite his demotion to number seven. He exploited awayward spell from Lee, hitting him for three fours in one over.He saw Alex Tudor come and go then watched as Andrew Caddick was pummelledby Lee, who had clearly singled him out for some special hostility. For thecrowd, it provided some of the best entertainment of the day as Caddickretaliated to a knock on the elbow by square cutting him for four.Lee was bowling as fast as he has ever bowled, his fastest ball reaching aremarkable 92.6mph and his next ball careered straight into Caddick’s stumpsbut as the bails went flying, up went the umpire’s hand to signal a no-ball,to huge cheers all round. With the score on 299 for nine, the players left the field for bad light andreturned to add another ten to the total before Alan Mullally becameMcGrath’s seventh victim of the match and the 350th of his career. It left Stewart unbeaten on 76, having faced 83 balls, and after a difficultseries it marked a welcome return to form.

Oman secure World T20 spot with memorable win

‘Bowlers bounced back in the last five overs’ – Mendis

Cinderella crashed the World Twenty20 Qualifier in style in Malahide on Thursday as Oman continued their improbable journey by storming away with a five-wicket win over Namibia. The win sealed Oman’s first ever spot in a major ICC event with a trip to India now booked for next year’s ICC World Twenty20 and victory for Oman also secured T20 international status for the next four years. Zeeshan Siddiqui’s sixth four over long-off capped the chase with an over to spare and brought up his half-century off 32 balls.Oman’s chase was aggressive from the start after being set a modest target of 149. They powered to 41 in five overs thanks to confident hitting from Khawar Ali and Zeeshan Maqsood. Khawar fell off the first ball of the sixth for 18 after being done in by a Sarel Burger slower ball while Maqsood fell for 28 after trying to sneak a second run off a misfield. Aamir Kaleem was Bernard Scholtz’s 14th wicket of the tournament, caught behind after gloving an attempted sweep for 8 to make it 67 for 3 in nine overs. However, Oman did not let Bernard tie them down as he had done successfully against other teams, using their feet to shuffle around the crease and create room for scoring options, mainly with deft glides for singles and twos in the gaps in front of square. After the game, Siddiqui indicated that Oman’s daily net sessions against their own arsenal of left-arm spinners – Ajay Lalcheta, Aamer Kaleem and Maqsood – had prepared them well for the challenge posed by Bernard. His figures of 1 for 29 were Bernard’s second-worst of the tournament as Siddiqui and Jatinder Singh manufactured a 62-run stand to put Oman in total control. When Jatinder was run out for 33 attempting a tight single, Oman were left needing 20 off 19 balls with six wickets in hand. Gerrie Snyman prized out another wicket in the following over, getting Mehran Khan inside-edge an attempted slog onto his stumps. But Siddiqui washed away any nervous energy by bashing Gerrie for six over long-off which prompted his new batting partner Aamer Ali to race down the wicket and give him a bear hug.Another four by Siddiqui to end the over through cover spurred another embrace from Aamer. Six balls later, Siddiqui sealed the match to spark emotional celebrations on the pitch. Namibia have now lost four consecutive opportunities to clinch a spot in the World T20, after two playoff losses in 2012 and now a couple in 2014.Oman opted to field first, and found immediate success, as Gerrie Snyman was trapped lbw for a second-ball duck. However, for the rest of the first 10 overs, Oman showed their nerves as Namibia capitalised on four missed chances to race to 80 for 2. The biggest misses came off Stephan Baard, who survived on 26 and 33 to make a 52-ball 62 – after a skier at midwicket and a thick edge to short third man went to ground. However, Oman found renewed focus towards the death overs, as Namibia slipped from 134 for 4 to 148 for 9. The spirit came in the form of the slingy Munis Ansari. Just as he did in the win over Netherlands, Ansari struck multiple times at the death to rein in any chances of a big finish from Namibia. The major blows came on consecutive balls in the 18th over, when Nicolaas Scholtz was caught at square leg for 6 and Baard was pinned walking across his stumps as the Oman bench erupted.Aamir Kaleem had Gerhard Erasmus stumped in the 19th over for 2 before Ansari came back in the 20th to have JP Kotze caught at backward point by Mehran Khan. A run-out off the final ball prevented a second run and Ansari’s final figures of 3 for 23 were a big bounce back after a rocky start. In the end, it helped put Oman into their first World Cup in any format.

Miller offers Read selection hope

Chris Read has been given hope of another international opportunity after Geoff Miller, the national selector, said he was discussed during the six-hour selection meeting last week.Read last played for England on the 2006-07 Ashes tour when he replaced Geraint Jones for the Melbourne and Sydney Tests, but he never found favour during the Duncan Fletcher era. However, he is now captain of Nottinghamshire and has started the season in fine style with 283 runs at 70.75 in three matches.”The Notts public might have to watch this space. We will keep our options open.” Miller told BBC Radio Nottingham. “Yes, he was discussed, and he will continue to be discussed.”Chris knows we’re around the grounds all the time, and will keep in touch with how we’re feeling. From his point of view, it’s a matter of consistently putting in the performances.”England have been through a batch of keepers over the past 12 months, starting with Matt Prior this time last year before he was dropped in favour of Tim Ambrose and Phil Mustard has been given a one-day run. Meanwhile, James Foster was selected for the England Lions tour of India although Prior kept for the Lions against New Zealand last week. With a new selection panel in place there is a feeling that there is a second chance for some players to impress and earn international honours. Read’s Nottinghamshire team-mate Ryan Sidebottom, named England Player of the Year on Monday, benefited from such a move last summer. Although David Graveney was still the chairman of selectors at the time, Peter Moores had a significant say in his recall.”With this new regime it’s an open door,” said Sidebottom. “If you are performing then you could get selected at any minute. Injuries come along and the more competition for places there is the stronger England will be.”
